29th SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
A few years ago I remember hearing about a
survey of young children asking them what
they wanted to be when they grow up. The
most popular aspirations were to be
footballers and pop stars. I suppose because
these people are perceived to be rich and
famous. When James and John ask Jesus to
sit on his right hand and his left hand in his
glory, in a way that is what they are asking
for, to be famous, to be V.I.Ps!
Jesus’ response is not to make any promises
about fame and importance but simply to
ask them if they are willing to follow his
same destiny, to drink his same cup. And
then Jesus concludes pointing out to them
that his idea of being an important person, a
great person, is not about fame, glory and
power, but about serving and self-giving. In
a nutshell that greatness is about loving,
about serving others.
Jesus wants to transform our vision and
help us to see the world and each other as
he sees us, which is of course to see the
world as it really is.
We might think in our hearts, ‘I’m not a very
important person, I don’t know any very
important people, perhaps the nearest I’d
get to the rich and famous is watching some
member of the royal family drive by or
going to a big football match’ – but the really
important people are all around us: the
mothers and fathers who don’t stop all day
looking after their children and working
hard to be able to be able to feed and house
them, the family members taking care of
someone who is ill and dependent in some
way, the parishioners who do so many
Greatness
is not always visible
others can find encouragement and
fellowship. Often all this loving and serving
seems to be hidden and unnoticed, but Jesus
is saying it is not hidden from God. God sees
and values all of this much more than status
and fame.
Every day we can change the world by
letting Jesus change our way of seeing
things. And the first big change is simply to
realise how important each of us are in the
eyes of God, and value the service which
each person is giving to others, as well as to
show our gratitude and appreciation to
those around us for the love and service
they give; ‘You are great!’

The Canonisation Mass in St Peter’s
Square last Sunday was very special. The
seven people raised to sainthood were Pope
Paul VI, Archbishop Oscar Romero, Fr.
Francesco Spinelli, Fr. Vincenzo Romano, Sr.
Caterina Kasper, Sr. Nazaria I March Mesa
and Nuzio Sulprizio. The spirit of prayer
and joy was so evident among all the
pilgrims. We pray that we can follow this
example, especially St Oscar in his love for
the poor. I prayed for you all at the tombs of

OF CORAZON HASHIBA, RIP
She was the wife of Mitsuo Hashiba,
her funeral will take place here on
Wednesday 24th October at 9:15am,
Followed by cremation at Enfield
Crematorium. We will keep her family and
friends in our prayers.
May her soul rest in peace.
ENTRANCE/EXIT TO CAR PARK
We will try an experiment in using the
center gates as entrance and exit from
November. On exiting the center gate gives
a better view of traffic and also you can be
seen by the oncoming traffic.
The gates you normally use will be closed.
Let’s give it a try!!
