A ratio compares the sizes of parts or quantities


to each other.

What is the ratio of red


counters to blue counters?

red : blue
=9:3
=3:1
For every three red counters there is
one blue counter.

= 12 : 4 : 8
= 3 : 1 : 2
For every three red counters there is one
yellow counter and two blue counters.
The most recognizable use of ratios and proportions is
drawing models and plans for construction. Scales must
be used to approximate what the actual object will be
like.

• ½ cup unsweetened • unsweetened cocoa
cocoa powder powder = 3 cups
• 1 tsp baking soda • baking soda= 6tsp
• 1 cup butter • Butter = 6 cups
• 2 cups sugar • Sugar = 12 cups
• 4 eggs • Eggs = 24 pcs
• 1 cup sour cream • sour cream = 6 cups
• ½ cup milk • cup milk = 3 cups
Formulation 2 makes 25 bottles of 330 ml
Example 3 calamansi juice. If you have 15 L of calamansi
extract how many bottles can you produce?

• 6.25 L water • 500 bottles
• .75 L calamansi extract
• 1.25 L Sugar syrup
