SPACING OF BARS IN BEAMS

Minimum horizontal spacing between bars (clear)
Greater of

 Diameter of the bar

 Diameter of the larger bar, where-in different diameters are used
 5 times the maximum size of coarse aggregates
 Of needle if needs vibrators are used.
Maximum horizontal spacing between bars (clear)
 For Tor 40 : 18 cm
 For Tor 50 : 15 cm
(If the redistribution of moments is considered from the section, the modified values are:

 For Tor 40 : 12.5cm

 For Tor 50 : 10.5 cm
Minimum vertical spacing between bars (clear)
Greater of

 Diameter of the bar

 Diameter of the larger bar, where-in different diameters are used
 ¾ of the maximum size of coarse aggregates
 50 cm
Minimum spacing
 8 cm
Maximum spacing
Lesser of

 75 d
 45 cm
Where d = effective depth.

DETAILING RULES FOR SLABS

Diameter
Minimum = 6 mm

Maximum, Least of the

 One eighth the overall depth of slab
 16 mm
Quantum of Reinforcement
1. Minimum = 0.12% of gross sectional area of slab (either way)
2. Maximum = 2% of gross sectional area of slab
Clear spacing between bars
Minimum = Greatest of :
1. 5 times the max. size of coarse aggregate
2. Diameter of the vibrator needle
Main Bars (Max.)
Least of

1. 45 cm
2. 3 times the effective depth
Distribution bars (Max.)

1. 45 cm
2. 5 times the effective depth

LONGITUDINAL REINFORCEMENT IN COLUMNS

Area of Reinforcement
1. Minimum = 0.8% of the gross sectional area of column
2. Maximum = 4% of the gross sectional area of column
Diameter of Bars
Minimum = 12 mm

Maximum = 50 mm

Number of Bars
1. Minimum = 4 bars for rectangular columns
2. Minimum = 6 bars for circular columns
Spacing of Bars
1. Maximum = 30 cm when measured along the periphery of the column.
In columns that have larger concrete cross sectional area than required, the above should be
based upon the actual area of concrete required to resist the direct load on the column, but
in no case the reinforcement shall be less than 0.8% of the gross cross sectional area of the
column.

COVER FOR REINFORCEMENT

Reinforcement shall have concrete cover and thickness of such cover (exclusive of plaster or
other decorative finish) shall be as follows:
 At each face of reinforcing bar in column, not less than 25 mm or less than twice the diameter of such
bar.
 For a longitudinal reinforcing bar in a columns, not less than 40 mm or less than the diameter of the
such bar, In the case of columns of minimum dimension of 200 mm or under whose reinforcing bar do
not exceed 12 mm, a cover of 25 mm may be used.
 For longitudinal reinforcing bar in a beam, not less than 25 mm nor less than the diameter of such bar.
