Further to our report of 15-10-2012, more pits were excavated at Chainages 18+220,18+240,
17+960 and observations are listed below. Samples were collected for testing for Moisture content
and Gradation of GSB.
Visual Observation:
1) Adjacent Areas are Water Logged and have a Water Table about the same level as subgrade.
2) Visual observations of all 4 Pits made, clearly indicate that the Moisture Content is well
above OMC in both GSB and Subgrade.
3) GSB Material used appears to be from natural source without any Blending and has oversize
aggregates. (sample collected for tests.)
4) Water appears to have percolated from the Top Surface and instead of being dispersed
Laterally through Drainage Layer( GSB),it has travelled downward to Subgrade Layer,
resulting in Subgrade failure leading to bumping on the WMM Top which has happened as
GSB has not functioned properly as Drainage Layer.
Recommendations:
b) Subgrade Top needs to be scarified, and allow to dry to OMC and compacted as per specification
c). Further Layers has to be constructed with Approved GSB (preferably Crushed ) to improve the
drainage properties of sub base.
