Excerpt from “Cutting For Stone”
“‘We got notice today of a site visit soon
from the people who accredit our
residence training program. If they don’t
like what they see, they can shut us
down. We’ve got too few interns. And too
few resident physicians at every level for
the patient volume we handle. Not to
mention too few faculty” (496).
Surgical Simulation Directions
● Split the class in half: there will be 2 sides - one is representing the
United States, the other is representing Ethiopia.
● The objective of this simulation is to see which country can
perform a “surgery” the best and fastest.
● Each team is given a bowl of sand mixed with assorted beads and
tools.
● To perform this “surgery”, your team (country) will be trying to
transfer the beads from the sand to the medical tray in the
cleanest and fastest way without using your hands, only using the
tools provided.
