Long-term Thinking
For Long-term Health
From wheelchair basketball to volleyball, from children’s archery to a 92-year-old track & field
participant, the Iowa Games and our affiliated events have provided sports, recreation, health and
wellness opportunities to Iowans of all abilities—for over 30 years.
Our best brand is the Iowa Games, but it is the 32-member board of the Iowa Sports Foundation who
powers the programs, events and challenges that attract thousands of participants every year.

comprised of a number of charity events in which the Reapers take on local businesses and groups.
Track and Field

across Iowa. Thanks to the ASI equipment, the 2018 State High School Track and Field Championships featured the
largest field of wheelchair athletes in state history.
Wheelchair Basketball
Adaptive Sports Iowa is proud to support the Iowa Renegade Wheelchair Basketball Team. The team, who is nationally
sanctioned, practices weekly in Ankeny and participates in a number of regional competitions.
RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

volunteers, took on RAGBRAI, the seven-day trek across Iowa. After six
successful years, the ASI team has become part of the RAGBRAI culture and
the Adaptive Sports Iowa brand is recognized amongst the thousands who take

blind and visually impaired. Goalball is a team sport in which a ball containing
bells is thrown at a goal on the opposing team’s end of the court.

Through support of the Minnesota Wild and Iowa Wild Hockey teams, ASI
purchased the necessary equipment and provided four opportunities for youth
to take the ice.
Winter Ski Experience
In collaboration with Adaptive Adventures from Chicago, ASI offered an annual snow skiing event at Seven Oaks
Recreation near Boone. This three-day event presented opportunities for both local instructors to learn the adaptive
equipment, as well as, physically disabled participants to experience the sport. ASI served 45 athletes with disabilities
at this event, with one day specifically reserved for veterans.
COMMUNITY AWARENESS
Adaptive Sports on the Grand Concourse
Adaptive Sports Iowa partnered with the Iowa State Fair to host a unique and fun event on the Grand Concourse.
Fairgoers had the chance to take in live demonstrations of adaptive programming and gather information on available
opportunities. Special Olympics Iowa and Courage League Sports were on-hand for the event and shared in providing
demonstrations.
Community Education Events
ASI took part in community education and awareness events in an effort to recruit new athletes, expand public
awareness of the mission, and represent the physically disabled community effectively. Such events include the Iowa
Bicycle Summit & Expo, Iowa State Fair, SCIA Adaptive Sports Clinic and school assemblies.
FUNDRAISING
Iowa Wild Split-the-Pot
The Iowa Wild, Des Moines-based ice hockey team, provided ASI the opportunity to host a split-the-pot raffle during
34 home games at Wells Fargo Arena. Through the 2017-2018 season, ASI raised more than $35,000.
$10,000 Raffle
ASI conducted a raffle, offering a grand prize of $10,000. Denny Albaugh of Ankeny won the $10,000 and donated it
back to ASI. More than $22,000 was raised.
