Unit 1 Plan: Geometry Basics (3.

5 Weeks)

Unit Overview
In this unit, students will establish a foundational knowledge of geometry on which every
following unit will be built on.

Unit Standards
G.B.1: I can identify figures by geometric descriptions
G.B.2: I can use basic geometric definitions to solve problems

Enduring Understandings
Everything students learn in this unit will lead to a broader outcome of students having the
following enduring understandings that they will carry with them to future units
● Geometry is like a brand-new language because there are many names and terms for
every object, shape and figure. It is important that we are specific and accurate when
describing geometric figures.
● When referring to an angle, line, plane, ray or point, we must use letters to specify
which we are talking about.
● We can use pictures to depict situations in geometry.
● To determine the measure of an angle or length of an object, we can set up an equation,
solve for the variable, and plug the variable back in to find the measure/length.

Essential Questions
Students will reflect on these questions daily to guide their learning.
● What is geometry?
● How can we create equations based on geometric figures/descriptions?
● What does collinear and coplanar mean?
● How can we represent the concepts “collinear” and “coplanar” in a drawing?
● How do we name and identify angles?
● Why is naming geometric figures important?
● What does bisect mean?
● What are vertical angles?
● What are complementary and supplementary angles?
● What is the segment addition postulate?
