A meteor falls to earth in the desert.

A scientist comes to
study the meteor, and takes a sample of bacteria. When
he studies the sample under his microscope, he finds that
there are approximately 4,000 bacteria specimen on the
slide! What’s even crazier is that when he looks again, he
finds that the bacteria are reproducing at a rate of 2 times
per minute! How many bacteria specimens will there be
after 1 hour?

- Is the question asking you to multiply or divide?

- The question is asking you to multiply the
number of minutes by the number of bacteria.
- How many minutes are in 1 hour?
- 60 minutes
- Convert your significant numbers to scientific notation.
- 60= 6.0x101 & 4000= 4.0x103
- Write the equation you will use to solve the equation
here: 6.0x101 x 4.0x103
- How many bacteria specimen will there be after 1
hour? 2.4x105

Based on the movie ‘Evolution’

Oh no! The bacteria are still growing! As they adapt to
earth’s climate and atmosphere, they are getting bigger
and turning into functioning organisms with vicious space
abilities. The only way to stop them is to cover the entire
meteor in Head & Shoulders shampoo. If one bottle can
cover 1 square foot, and the meteor is 400 square feet,
and each bottle costs $3.99 at your local retailer, how
much will it cost to eradicate the alien species?

4.0x102 x 3.99 x 100 =1.6x103
