FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q What is the main benefit of the Canopy 400 Series?

A Canopy, Advantage and Canopy 400 series modules provide different performance at different price points so
that network operators can select the connectivity solution that best meets the requirements of the business
case. Canopy provides 7 Mbps of proven reliable connectivity in Line of Sight (LOS) environments with range
up to 2 miles. Advantage modules provide 14 Mbps of reliable connectivity in LOS environments with range
up to 1 mile. The Canopy 400 series AP and SM provide up to 21 Mbps of throughput, longer range and near
and non Line of Sight connectivity.

All Canopy modules enhance a network operator’s ability to provide video, voice and data connectivity that
can be used for:
• Video Surveillance connectivity
• Broadband network extensions
• Infrastructure for hot spots and metropolitan networks

Q What is the meaning of the name “400 Series”?

A The Canopy 400 Series is a dramatic addition to the Canopy portfolio. The Canopy system, providing 7 Mbps
wireless connectivity, originally developed in 2002 has millions of modules in-service in thousands of net-
works around the world. The second generation Advantage product extended the Canopy portfolio to include
a higher bandwidth of 14 Mbps and lower latency option. The Canopy 400 series is a dramatic extension to
the Canopy product line as it includes higher throughput to 21 Mbps and nLOS/NLOS connectivity. Network
operators can now choose the solution that best meets their functional and business case requirements.

Q What is the performance in near Line of Sight (nLOS) and non-Line of Sight (NLOS) situations?
A Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) technology provides improved near-line of sight (nLOS)
and non-line of sight (NLOS) coverage, which allows the Canopy 400 series to extend broadband network
coverage into urban areas where obstructions and foliage have limited system expansion.

Urban LOS scenario:
• AP located on downtown office building
• Outdoor SM located 0.27 miles from AP
• Clear LOS between SM and AP

Results of Urban LOS scenario:

• The Canopy 400 series AP and SM demonstrate 19.4 Mbps aggregate throughput

SM Rx (dBm) -56
AP Rx (dBm) -59
Aggregate throughput (Mbps) 19.4 Mbps

Urban NLOS scenario:

• AP located on downtown office building
• Outdoor SM located 0.27 miles from AP
• LOS between SM and AP is blocked by eight story brick office building

Results of Urban LOS scenario:

• The Canopy 400 series AP and SM demonstrate 6.1 Mbps aggregate throughput

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q Is the 400 series product WiMAX compatible or upgradeable to WiMAX?

A There are no WiMAX profiles for the unlicensed 5.4 GHz band at this time. The Canopy 400 Series AP and
SM are based on a proprietary implementation using many of the technologies of WiMAX including TDD and
OFDM 256FFT. As 802.16e WiMAX profiles are established for the unlicensed bands, Motorola will investigate
the development of WiMAX compliant equipment that can be offered at price points that support the business
cases of network operators.

Q Can I operate the 400 Series products using the same tower location as I am using for my Canopy and Advan-
A tage Access Points?
Yes. Canopy 400 series products can be located on the same tower as Canopy and Advantage Access Points
at all frequencies – including 5.4 GHz. In order to co-locate Access Points at the same location, there are some
important guidelines regarding spectrum availability and vertical separation between Access Points.
