MA201- (Partial Differential Equation) July-November 2018

Tutorial - 1 Instructor: Dr. Pratibhamoy Das

In the class, we have shown that the partial derivatives of a function exist
may not imply that- these functions are continuous or differentiable.

1. Consider f as
 1
(x2 + y 2 ) sin , if (x, y) 6= 0 or x + y 6= 0,
f (x, y) = x+y
0, otherwise.

Show that f is differentiable at (0,0) but partial derivatives are not continuous.

2. Prove or Disprove- Existence of partial derivatives of a function is enough to con-

clude the existence of the directional derivatives of the functions. Give justification.

3. Let E ⊂ Rn , f : E → Rn and x0 be an accumulation point of E. Then there can

be a function f whose directional derivative exists at x0 but the function f is not
differentiable at x0 . In addition, if f is continuous then can you say that f will be
differentiable at x0 .

4. Check the following function g is differentiable at (1, 0) or not:

g(x, y) = (xy, x + y).

5. Give an example of a function whose partial derivatives and directional derivatives

exist but the function is not differentiable.
