1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this Work Method Statement for Block Works (Concrete Masonry Units) is to
outline and describe in detail the procedure such as setting and lay-out plan on actual location,
erection of scaffolding, mixing of cement mortar, mounting/laying of blocks and all other related
activity. Inform all concerned supervisor including workers the value and importance of this
activity prior to implementation. This activity should be performed with strict compliance and
implementation of Safety Requirements & Procedure and project specifications to complete the
work both for exterior and interior masonry walls.

– Lay-out and put markings on the concrete surface the correct and final location of block as
per approved drawing.
– Check correct position for embedded and location of dowel rebar if not, provide dowel bar to
concrete surface as specified on the approved drawing.
– Provide temporary but rigid lumber for guide/references to check plumbed and alignment
when placing and fixing initial blocks.
– Generally the mixing and use of mortar should be in accordance to BS 5628: Part 3: 1985
Materials and components, design and workmanship
– The necessary proportions of the materials and mean compressive strength are given in Table
1 of BS 5628: Part 2 : 1995 Structural use of reinforced and pre-stressed masonry, using mortar
designation (ii) and cement: sand with plasticizer, proportion by volume will be, 1: 3 to 4. Mean
compressive strength at 28 days is 4.5 N/mm².
– For Using Ready Mix Mortar: Premix Bloc Fix. Refer to MAR ARC 0033 Ready Mix
Mortar, Refer to manufacturer’s product preparation for mixing. Refer to BS-EN 196-1: 1994
Compressive Strength of 13 N/mm² at 28 days.
– Horizontal joint reinforcement or weld wire fabric shall not be broken or cracked at joints
and bends.
– Provide a 12mm diameter vertical dowel bar spaced at every 800mm intervals as specified on
the approved drawing. Place reinforcement and accessories in accordance with the sizes, types,
and locations as per approved drawing.
– Fasten reinforcement to prevent out of allowed displacement due to construction loads and
pouring of mortar.
– Provide top anchor galvanized or stainless steel reinforcement to beam or slab soffit to
connect to the last block layer.
3.5 Mounting/Placing of Blocks
– Only approved CMU will be allowed to use from initial work up to completion of work at
specified location or area.
– CMU shall be free of defects, laitance, loose materials, oil and other materials to increase
mortar bonding capacity.
– Irregular size of blocks will be dealt with using an electric cutting disc.
– Check the alignment both horizontal and vertical before proceeding for the next layer as per
work progresses.
– The joints should be tooled to compact the mortar, to give a firm joint between mortar and
unit and to give the desired profile. The joints should be well raked out to a depth of between
10mm and 15mm as the work proceeds to give an adequate key.
– Joints should be brushed out to remove dust and loose materials and should be lightly wetted
using a brush.
– Do not carry up any one leaf more than 1.50m in one day except where permitted by the
designer.
– Completed blocks have to be cured with water for at least three days by spraying 3 to 4 times
daily.
– Control joint to be provided at every 8.0m with 10mm width. Refer to Architectural Standard
Block Wall Detail-2.
