We, Filipinos, have always been physically active and socially inclined. In fact, way

far from this generation, our late ancestors involved themselves in strenuous exercises and

gatherings. However, as time passes by, little by little, a gap is being created between

people and his daily physical activities and interaction with others. One of the causes is

that the society makes people more and more stressed; exposed to situations that places too

much pressure on their shoulders. This problem continues to worsen than ever. Not only

the workers experience these things, but students, as well. In a bunch of workloads, plenty

agreements and appointments, high demands and expectations, approaching deadlines—

all of these comes with exhausted bodies, tired minds, sleepy eyes, and drained energies.

Having this as a daily routine, people undeniably indulge themselves in an unhealthy

living; where in, to meet all economical requirements, healthy lifestyle is being set aside

and is replaced by sedentary habits. This includes not having enough time for meal and

sleep, entering different vices, too much attention to gadgets and work, leaving physical

activities and real-life interaction to people, out. Speaking of gadgets, as the world

continues to discover and widen the capabilities of technology, we are merely making use

it—it uses us instead. Surely, innovation offers us a lot. But as we mistakenly depend on it

too much, we tend to enter a virtual world and forget the real one. Even children are hooked

up by this trend. Fun and noisy physical games were replaced by one-click and social

networking sites and applications. We are, therefore, finding more ways to communicate,

but less ways to connect.

This is a critical condition that needs to be handled properly. Not only that people

are feeding their future to a life-time suffering due to being susceptible to diseases and

sicknesses, but also, we are wasting our opportunities to enjoy and maximize our health

and energy. Giving time to physical activities and social interactions, lots of benefits in

terms of physical, emotional, and mental health are flooding on our way. It is always good

to keep our mind happy, and our bodies strong, that is why engaging to physical activities

and gatherings must be part of a man’s life. Having recreation and leisure time can also be

beneficial to people get away from stress. Aside from that, we can discover hidden talents

and skills that is potential to be improved and become a profession—passion can merge

with income, which is another opportunity. Lastly, stress, unhealthy and sedentary lifestyle

contributes to early aging, wrinkles, accumulation of fat, and many more, to result in

unpleasant physical appearance. In which, keeping oneself in good condition in every

aspects, especially with the health and mental being, will bring good and clean body, face,

and interaction towards people. Everyone must practice having a happy and healthy life.

Practically, it is a matter of mind setting and organizing time properly, to give attention for

both urgent and important things.

Accordingly, there are lots of ways to get people into the solution to this problem.

People do not actually need to work to keep themselves happy and healthy on their own

because numerous organizations and institutions offer physical exercises and activities that

are open for everyone, often times, for free. This includes public services such as zumba,

yoga, and many more. Institutions and schools are one of the mediums, usually involving
dance and sports. They help students, even the parents, to engage on physical activities

with other people, in so much fun. More often, contests are held, as well, to test the

students’ competitiveness, and inspire them to develop and master their skills and passion.

Educational institutions wouldn’t miss the opportunity to participate with these acts, that

is why Intramurals are organized and prepared for.

In line with this, the Sintang Paaralan, our very own Polytechnic University of the

Philippines had its own Intramurals celebrated within the whole month of September.

Intramurals are recreational sports or activity organized within a certain institution. The

opening of this event was supposedly scheduled on the first Monday of the said month,

unfortunately, classes have been cancelled because of bad weather as a result of the south

west monsoon.
Consequently, last September 10, 2018, the PUP Intramurals 2018 have been

formally opened and announced. The University Intramurals 2018 comes with the theme

“Great Things are Done as We Strive Together” as part of the 114th founding anniversary

of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.

During the flag ceremony, students at the main building were gathered on the

freedom park as the program was properly followed. The day begins with the loud sound

systems prepared at the front of the north wing of the main building. The students

eventually accumulated, until the program starts. The ceremony was led by the PUP

President, Emanuel C. de Guzman, followed by a speech from Senator Sonny Angara, and

the Philippine Sports Commission Chairman, Mr. William Ramirez. The symbolic

Lighting of the Torch was also done as a sign that thee Intramurals was officially opened.

After almost 2 long hours of the ceremony, students were already allowed to enter into
their respective rooms, as the loud and energizing beats of music spread through the whole

university, with the parade of different departments of the institution.

The preparation has been tough for this, not only the sports lover and the analysts.

The whole month of September has been a fun time for many people participating on

different games, sports, and contests, as well as just simply watching and joining the good

vibe of shouts and support to various teams and players. Actually, this is my second year

of staying with this University, but on this year have I just become aware of the Intramurals

being organized. Personally, I feel good when hearing those happy noise of people and

events around. That, simply, kind of relieves stress even just for a moment. I am not a

hardcore fan of sports and dance shows but I enjoy watching it; seeing people exert and

put off their molded talents and skills. I keep myself doing physical activities everyday,

and socially connecting to people not only with the internet, but on real-life meeting, as

well. But I haven’t participated to any contest of any kind of dance and sports, basically

because I don’t see my self possessing gift aligned to those. But of course, I believe that it

is never too late for me to discover and exercise those abilities. Maybe when time comes,

if I change and improve this lame and skinny body of mine, together with the Scoliosis I

have. Even so, when the school and grades require me to do so, I am not excused, and I

wouldn’t hold back. Same goes with athletes as well, I think, their God given capabilities

comes with such a great responsibility in return. They have to regularly exercise and

practice their skills, they have to balance their time for other chores and roles, as well.
They have to keep their bodies fit, energy-filled, and strong, because these are what they

need in performing and exerting the works they have prepared for.

Not only, that athletes, dancers, and other physically inclined people, have to ensure

the wellness of their own bodies, minds, and skills; they have to, as much, learn to enjoy

being on company with others. Almost all of today’s sports, dances, and other contests

involves working in groups and teams; if not, they still have to work with a coach. Simply

meaning that everyone has to be with others. On the University Intramurals, emphasizing

the ball games and dances, the contestants played and performed within groups of people

possessing same interests in physical activities. It is essential to maintain commitment,

unity, empathy, and communication not only within these groups, but for every

relationship, as well; of course, on this narrative report, the focus is on the participants.

First of all, it is a must to commit time and effort for this kind of stuff. Practice time with

the group must be attended, and individual practices must be conducted. People in a group

do not have the same likes and characteristics. Not everyone will be nice together. But this

is not an excuse; there must be unity in all of this diversities. Help and empathy must be

shown instead of anger and disappointment, especially, when mistakes and failures are

done. Most especially, there must be good communication between everyone. In this way,

a group can improve their relationship more and more, and in result, correcting and

enhancing their performances in their related physical activities will be more open.

Therefore, harmonious relationship and performance will be shown.

This is what has been manifested during the games and dances. The teams really

gave their best shots on every second that the floor and stages are theirs. It is the

combination of refining one’s own skills and well-being, plus, enriching and enhancing

this within a wider scale, which is on groups. Both the sports and dance contests have been

very tough all through out. Now, let us look back and zoom in a little bit at some of the

competitions held at the PUP Manila Campus. This section of the narrative report will be

including the Volleyball for men and women, the Hip-hop and the Cheer dance

competition, and other sports contests.

Starting with the Volleyball game on the first day of the Intramurals. The matches

that has been battled by the teams in order to get to the top gave so much tension and

enjoyment to the audience. In the end, among all the male volleyball groups, the College

of Human Kinetics dominated the games, followed by the College of Engineering, and by

the College of Business Administration.

Next stop, the women’s Volleyball game. All the teams did their very best to give

pride and honor to their respective colleges, but these three risen up: the College of
Business Administration as the champion, succeeded by the College of Human Kinetics,

followed lastly by the Senior High School.

The dance competitions were conducted last September 27, 2018, at the open court.

The Hip-hop dance contest was conducted earlier, while the Cheer dance was done in the

afternoon.

The heat of the surroundings cannot beat the fire that the performers has while

giving their best to impress everyone. The contestants all shown great dances and

performances, but the audience impact sided just with some. Because of this, the winners

definitely deserve the titles they got. The champion of the Hip-hop Competition was the

College of Arts and Letters, which combined modern and festival dances. They were

followed by the College of Engineering, and by the Information Technology.

Lastly, the Cheer dance competition gave the audience the tension and “wow” factor

with the stunts, lifts, and choreography that the performers shown. From the 15-minute

rehearsal each team, the chills continue to flow down to the very contest proper. All the

groups worked hard and sacrificed their safety for the sake of offering the best show to

everyone, but these teams went up beyond the surface: Sta. Maria, Bulacan Campus,

followed by the College of Communication, College of Business Administration,

Parañaque Campus, and College of Arts and Letters.

There are lots of other sports that have been played including basketball, badminton, and

swimming that had College of Engineering, and Senior High School as champions. Indeed,

every contestant invested so much time and effort for this series of events. Although some

didn’t receive awards, no energy is wasted. Aside from the competitors, the organizers of

the event must be commended, as well, for exerting much effort to make this all that has

happened possible.
The STEM 12-23 had a great experience during the Intramurals. This section got

towatch John Louie Fernandez and Ms. Alyssa Capuso dance, as a part of the Hip-hop

dance contest gimmicks.

Truly, the Intramurals helped the students not only to engage in physical activities,

but also to somehow put away stress. The main goal is to inspire everyone to become

physically active and socially inclined. In this simple way, we can help each other to

increase health span, instead of prolonging life span while suffering under various

sicknesses. Our energies are meant for us to enjoy.
