Studying Spanish and Art in Cuzco, Peru

Oct 30,2018 Cedar City, Utah

Brookayla Olds, a student from Southern Utah University studying Spanish and Art, went to
Cuzco, Peru with a Study Abroad team organized by the Spanish department at SUU. For 6
weeks she was engaged in interactive courses that visited cultural museums, studied grammar,
and practiced conversing and perfecting Spanish skills. In the afternoons she participated in an
internship at the afterschool program Colibri established by the National Police of Peru. In the
internship program she conducted art activities and helped the students learn.

Her studies in Spanish and Art helped Brookayla learn more of the cultural and historical sites of
Peru and aid the students in their activities. The group investigated the ruins of the Incan
people including the Morray, an agricultural wonder, and Machu Picchu. Before her internship,
she had investigated several activities promoted by the art therapy program of George
Washington University, collected the material necessary to conduct them, and engaged the
students one day a week in an activity. The activities included: Zentangle, a collage, and a
demonstration of how to make silly putty. She donated over $100 for the activities and food
supplied at the program.

Brookayla Olds was funded by the Edge Program at SUU and Sigma Delta Pi. The Edge Program
is an organization organized by SUU to help students engage in a project that they constructed
or joined to better apply their studies. Sigma Delta Pi is an organization for Spanish majors
across the country, they engage in Spanish cultural activities and promote Study Abroads. ###
