1 Scope

1.1 JDM F17X3 describes the relationships between JDM F17 and JDM F20 and several John Deere
paint performance standards that are replaced by JDM F17 and JDM F20. In particular, JDM F17X3
covers:
 Requirements for existing paint performance qualifications to be accepted as meeting the
qualifications of specified JDM F17 performance levels according to JDM F17X2 and of
specified JDM F20 performance classifications according to JDM F20X2.
 JDM F17 and JDM F20 qualifications that shall be considered as meeting the qualifications of
other specified John Deere paint performance standards.

1.2 JDM F17X3 describes the relationships between JDM F14, JDM F17, and JDM F20 and selected
JB/T 5673 paint designations previously used in China.
1.3 This standard can contain mandatory provisions, which are identified by the words “shall” or
“required”. Compliance with the mandatory provisions is required to claim conformance with this standard.
This standard can also contain guideline provisions, which are generally identified by the words “should”
or “recommended”. Compliance with the guideline provisions is not required, because they might not be
appropriate for all machines or all applications.

2 Terms and Definitions

For the purposes of JDM F17X3, the following terms and definitions apply.

2.1
grandfathered qualification
An existing qualification to a John Deere paint performance standard other than JDM F17 or JDM F20
that is accepted as a JDM F17 qualification according to JDM F17X2 or a JDM F20 qualification
according to JDM F20X2.

2.2
paint process
The controlled variables that contribute to the performance of the final paint; this includes but is not
limited to substrates, paint materials, pretreatment materials and parameters, application parameters, and
cure parameters.

3 Grandfathered Qualifications

3.1 An existing process qualification for another John Deere paint performance standard can result in
grandfathered qualification to specified JDM F17 levels or JDM F20 classifications.

3.2 In order for a qualification to another John Deere paint performance standard to be considered a
grandfathered qualification, it shall meet all of the following conditions
 Existing qualification shall have been generated by either a John Deere enterprise or John
Deere unit materials engineering group.
 The grandfathered qualification shall be valid only for the paint process described in the
qualification report.
 The process owner or issuing facility shall maintain a copy of the original qualification report.

3.3 Grandfathered qualifications expire when the process documented in the original qualification has
changed. Once the paint process has been changed, the new (changed) process shall be qualified
according to JDM F17X2 or JDM F20X2.

3.4 Table 1, Table 2, and Table 3 show the grandfathered qualifications for several John Deere paint
performance standards. Exceptions included in a particular paint designation are not covered by the
indicated grandfathered qualifications unless the exceptions have been reviewed by the John Deere
materials engineering group that approved the original qualification to ensure that the exception
requirements are met by the process.

3.5 Paint processes approved as meeting the original qualifications shown in Table 1, Table 2, and
Table 3 shall be considered as qualified for the corresponding JDM F17 performance levels and JDM F20
performances classes, subject to the exceptions indicated in clause 3.4.

3.6 Table 1 specifies the grandfathered qualifications applicable to JDM F11 performance classes.

4 Correlation of JDM F17 and JDM F20 Performance Requirements to Other

John Deere Paint Performance Standards

4.1 Table 4, Table 5, and Table 6 show the JDM F17 performance levels and JDM F20 performance
classes that are accepted as meeting the requirements specified according to other John Deere paint
performance standards. Exceptions included in a particular paint designation are not covered unless the
exceptions have been reviewed by the John Deere materials engineering group that established the
original specification to ensure that the exception requirements are met by the process.

4.2 Paint processes approved as meeting the JDM F17 performance levels or JDM F20 performance
classes shown in Table 4, Table 5, and Table 6 shall be considered as meeting the requirements for the
corresponding paint performance standard, subject to the exceptions in clause 4.1.
