Record $8 Million Gift Results in Renaming College of Business
E
arly morning on Oct. 3,
a campus-wide email
was sent from Radford
University President Brian O.
Hemphill inviting students to a
“momentous occasion” at 2 p.m.
that day without any further
explanation.
That afternoon, signs
overtook the front of Kyle Hall
advertising the “Momentous
Occasion,” as well as directing
people to the event and where to
find parking.
Even though many people
knew about the occurrence of
the event for weeks, there was
still much secrecy to what the
event was about.
Even Faculty Senate
President Jake R. Fox, Ph.D.,
admitted while he was speaking
during the actual event that he
did not know exactly why he was
there.
Remarks were also given by
Robert Blankenship, a junior
finance and marketing major at
Radford, who gave a testimony
to the amount of real world
experience he has received from
studying at Radford.
A crowd of more than 250
people waited for President
Hemphill to announce why
everyone was gathered.
After thanking different
people, he invited Sandra
“Sandy” Davis and William
“Jack” Davis to the podium
with him, he then announced,
“Today I have the distinct honor
of standing before each of you
and announce a landmark gift to
provide scholarships to students
studying in the College of
Business and Economics and the
College of Visual and Performing
Arts.”
He continued, “Sandy and
Jack’s monumental gift will
produce a lifetime of Davis
Scholars who will excel in the
classroom, distinct themselves,
really be distinctive, as
professionals as they move
into their careers, and provide
their time and talent to the
communities in which they
live, and they work. I say to
each of you, a monumental gift,
resulting in the naming of the
Sandra C. Davis and William C.
Davis College of Business and
Economics.”
The Davis’s revealed an
image of Kyle Hall with its
new name of “Davis College of
Business and Economics.”
The Davis’s donation of $8
million is the largest individual
donation that Radford University
has ever received.
An anticipated
80 students
will reward
this
scholarship
each academic
year once fully
implemented.
This gift will provide
incoming first-year students
and transfer students with a
scholarship of $4,000 a year or
$2,000 per semester.
Davis Scholars must be
studying full-time in the College
of Business and Economics
(COBE) or the College of Visual
and Performing Arts (CVPA) and
have a high school or college
transfer GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Students also must be Virginia
residents.
Students will be able to
renew this scholarship for two
academic school years or a total
of four semesters. Students who
wish to be eligible for additional
semesters must maintain a GPA
of 3.75 or higher.
An anticipated 80 students
will reward this scholarship
each academic year once fully
implemented, but three students
will be selected the first year.
Along with the renaming of
COBE, a 350-seat performance
hall will be renamed to

followed by a campus-wide
reception on the second floor
of Kyle Hall where refreshments

During the event, Sandy
Davis said, “Radford is on a

positive atmosphere here, and it
is very contagious.”

University students.”

not have the DUO Two-
Factor authentication
service, Radford University is
going to freeze your RU Portal.
Why is the university
pushing this service on the

and why do we need it?

easily be stolen by going to a
malicious website and you don’t
realize it.”
Travis further states, “What
that second factor does is it

For faculty and professors on
campus, the lesson plan will not
require your phone to teach your
students.
“We’ve made it so classrooms
and labs on campus ... don’t have
were given a form to fill out that
asked for things like their name
and address. Students were told
that after they filled out the
form, they would be registered
to vote in Radford and that
they would be receiving more
information in the mail.
“I was approached by a scout
when I was sitting at a table at

would not leave me alone until
I had registered to vote. Little
did I know, he had registered me
for an absentee ballot. I am from
Loudoun County up in Northern
Virginia, so I wasn’t registered
to vote here in Radford. I got

vote absentee. Thankfully, I got
it in enough time to send my
vote.”
In the past, the Student
Government Association (SGA)
had to train students who were a
part of third-party organizations
in order for them to be on campus
and get students registered to
vote.
In 2017 that was no longer
the case.

university is hoping the service

occurred were due to lack of
training and poor understanding,
according to Tracey Howard, the
Director of Elections at Radford.
There was a total of 272
denials of voter registration in
2016 and 417 denials in 2017.
The reasons varied why there
were so many denials, but the
most common reason was that
the registrar’s office did not have
enough information like social
security numbers to complete a
person’s voter registration.
Since the people who were
trying to register did not put
all of their information or
contact information, they were
not informed about the issues
that were happening with their
applications.
“The third-party groups
failed to get complete addresses,
and that interfered with our
ability to correspond with the
applicant,” said Tracy Howard.
After these incidents in
2017, third parties have gotten
better with getting the correct

Watch
This Fall
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before | Netflix
F
all is coming whether we
like it or not. The year
is winding down and
so should we. Luckily Netflix
always has our back with some
must-see original content.
Netflix has been coming into
its own recently. The network
has produced several teen films
that are reminiscent of the
classics. While these films are
far from Oscar-winning, I think
it is fortunate to have movies
that are capturing the essence of
teen romance today.
The characters are cringe-
worthy throughout, and the
Sierra Burgess Is a Loser | Netflix
storylines are nothing short of
implausible. All the while, you
shall feel a sense of being a part
of this upcoming teen era.
Films like The Breakfast
Club and Heathers, even modern
classics such as Mean Girls, are
hard to compete with. However,
with Molly Ringwald herself
making appearances in these
Netflix originals, the Queen of
Teens is sealing her approval
and allowing the millennial
generation to take the throne.
Throw all your film snobbery
out of the window to enjoy these
films. Sometimes it is okay to
let yourself be subject to a bad
movie and admit you enjoyed
every minute.
The Kissing Booth
This movie got the ball
rolling for Netflix and sparked
the movement we are seeing on
the service today. At the time
of its release, it was the fourth
most popular movie on IMDB
behind only this year’s main
events, Deadpool 2, Avengers:
Infinity War and Solo.
While the film has been
trashed by critics, this film has
already blossomed into a cult
classic. The film is nothing short
of predictable and follows all the
classic tropes of a teen movie.
At least they are giving the
audience what they want.
Sierra Burgess is a Loser
Striking red hair and freckles,
lead-actor Shannon Purser is the
Molly Ringwald for millennials.
The film of a marching-
band teen brings us back to the
characters of Sixteen Candles
and Pretty in Pink. Pair this
with Tumblr sensation Noah
Centineo, who is currently
stealing the hearts of millions
and the teen heartthrob helm
from Chad Michael Murray.
This film has a retro gloss.
Its ending reaches an 80s-style
climax, and you have yourself a
teen classic.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved
Before
This film may be the best
of an okay bunch. John Hughes
would be a fan. There is a solid
effort to depict young adults’
wobbly attempts at romance.
The film portrays rather well
the over-sexualized and media-
saturated modern world that this
generation is battling through.
Especially when it comes to a
16-year old’s awkward attempts
at dating.
Most teens do not flock

to the cinema anymore. This
generation is enjoying the
simple pleasures of the small
screen. The marketing of movies
and its stars has become all too
easy.
The new teen film era
sees stars propel into stardom
overnight. These kids do not
go out and grab the latest
angsty magazine, a glossy issue
with Lindsay Lohan or Alicia
Silverstone slapped on the cover.
Social media allows instant
access to these stars, some of
which are now enjoying real-life
romances for all to see online.
Teens take to social media
to do Netflix’s advertising.
Whether it’s tweeting out
to friends about this ‘totally
insane’ new flick or starting up a
worrisome amount of fan pages
to deluge Instagram with.
With so many teens
abandoning films for binge-
watching TV-shows, perhaps
filling this pop culture void
will bring back the kids love of
movies with a boom-box.
These films are here to stay,
even if you didn’t enjoy them.
Netflix has sparked this teen
comedy movement, a nostalgia-
evoking homage to the classics
we all grew up with. Hollywood
has left us begging for teen
films, Netflix has resurrected
the genre.

Radford is a pretty scary
place, and I wanted to find out
how scary it is. Looking through
old articles written by The
Tartan and The Grapurchat,
what I found was shocking.
One of the shocking stories is
Elizabeth, the ghost of Radford’s
tunnels.
She was pranked by typical
popular girls, and they created
this scheme to make her believe
she had a secret admirer. Telling
her to dress up as a princess and
her admirer would be dressed as
her prince.
According to the 1984 Tartan
article about Elizabeth written by
Richie Ellis, Elizabeth received
her final note on Halloween
night while she waited for him
at the Halloween party that was
thrown on campus.
The note told her to come to
the tunnels under her dorm, and
soon she followed.
While waiting for him in the
tunnels, she called his name.
Instantly, the lights went out,
and the door was slammed
shut. She pounded and kicked
on it. She heard laughter from
the other side of the door and
started running down the dark
tunnels, calling her admirers
name. Soon she fell, breaking
her neck and dying instantly.
It is said that she visits
every campus’ Halloween party,
searching for her prince and
visits the tunnels every year
crying for him, and when she
finds him, she’ll take him to
their meeting spot and keep him
there forever.
Scary, right?
Rookmin Maharaj wrote an
article in 1995; one that left
chills down my spine.
According to Maharaj, the
Heth family owned the land that
the university now sits on, and
McConnell library was where the
family house used to be located.
One of his sources was
an Assistant Director of
Admissions at Radford who
told him that the family made a
deal with the state to allow the
school to be built on their land.
However, what happened to the
Heth family is unknown - there
was no information about the
whereabouts of the Heth family,
and there was no records of
the family’s demise, no burial
records.
According to many students
I’ve come across, and Rookmin
Maharaj, the writer of his 1995
Tartan articles, everyone knows
the Tyler Hall ghost.
The girl whose love was
forbidden, while being pregnant,
she hung herself in the elevator
shaft.
However, there’s another
version that she was a faculty
member’s daughter that
committed suicide. According
to Rookmin’s article, Dean of
Students, Bonnie Hulbert and
Director of Residential Life,
Jerry Dieringer of 1995 admitted
to never hearing of this, and
there was no date to link to such
occurrence.
Lauren Estes, a Whim
staff writer wrote about urban
legends of Radford, and this
is one, I promise you’ve never
heard of.
From Estes’ spine-tingling
article, she said, “In 1996,
Radford University witnessed
the tragic death of a student due
to an overdose of medication
mixed with alcohol. The female
student that passed away that
year was found by her roommate
in their second-floor room of
Peery Hall.”
“It’s been said that in the
room that she once lived in, the
door will never stay open. When
I was a Quest Assistant this
summer, I was putting flyers in
each room of Peery when it was
empty, and I noticed that when I
went into one of the rooms the
door would begin to swing shut
as I stepped into it.”
“I pulled it back to the wall,
and as I let go it still swung
towards its latch. Needless
to say, it kind of freaked me
out. When I told a fellow staff
member about it, he pointed
out the story about the death
and sure enough, the room I had
been in and her room was one
and the same.”
Finally, St. Albans
Sanatorium, a hub for the spooky
and paranormal.
Going from a vicious all-
boys school in the late 1800’s
and early 1900’s where students
committed suicide under the
pressure of being athletically
and academically perfect were
too much for some. Soon, it
became a Sanatorium. Dr. John
C. King acquired the property
to now fulfill his vision;
introducing the nation’s first
top-notch psychiatric hospital.
However, nothing was top-
notch about the treatment
the patients received at this
madman’s hands. It is labeled
as one of the east coast’s most
haunted places.
I hope this gives you a scare,
and a fright ... and be vigilant
because you never know, who or
what is watching you.

have to be just a professor, and
you can rate the school itself
also. When rating the school,
there are different things to
rates like the food, location,
reputation, and so on.
How do you use it?
On the top of the website,
you can select what you are
looking to rate; if it’s a professor
in the school or the school itself.
When you type in Radford
University, two columns show
up, professors and how the
school stacks up. You can scroll
them are negative, but then
there are some that are positive.
Students shouldn’t judge a
professor or school based on the
comments of other people.
Sometimes people had
bad days or a bad experience
with the professor and needed
somewhere to post their
comments. That’s one reason
why people think that this
website isn’t accurate.
Some people think that this
website isn’t accurate enough
of the professor it doesn’t mean
that they are a “good teacher.”
When reading these
comments, some of these are
mostly quirky, yet untrustworthy
reviews. They all somewhat
sound the same, but people
have different experiences than
others do.
Personally, I don’t trust the
website. I think that it is just like
any website review on almost
anything. Anybody can say
anything, but you don’t have to
bring up in class how bad their
review was and try to overcome
that fear by showing off a
different teaching style.
Overall, ‘Rate My Professor’
isn’t the best site to use when
looking up almost anything
related to Radford University.
You must be there for the
experience yourself and don’t
let other peoples experience
influence your time here.

Women’s Soccer Mid-Season Review
I
t’s been a solid season so
far by most accounts for
the Women’s Soccer team.
Heading into the mid-season
stretch, the Highlanders are on
their way to becoming a serious
contender in the upcoming Big
South Tournament. Boasting a
7-2-1 record and many big wins
within the conference.
The women of Radford began
their season with a tie against
St. Francis of Pennsylvania
and a subsequent 1-5 loss in
Greenville, NC to the Pirates of
East Carolina. However, they
were able to go on a five-game
winning streak against teams
such as Wofford, Mount St.
Mary’s, Campbell and Elon.
In their second home game
against the Wofford Terriers,
five different Highlanders were
three games with one loss in
Conference play. They began
their Big South trek against
Campbell and scored four times
in the second half. Three of
those four goals were back to
back in under 10 minutes.
Wollmann and Casarez
racked up goals contributing to
the win. The Highlanders put up
a total of 21 shots in the entire
game and holding Campbell
to only 13. The women’s team
averages 16.4 shots per game
with 85 total shots on goal for
the season.
Including this win, the
women have posted three
shutouts this season.
The Radford defense has
been able to hold opposing
teams to 14.4 shots on goal and
1.40 goals for the entire season.

T
he Radford Volleyball
team overcame a Haley Kleespies stepped
competitive Campbell
team to win three sets to one.
The Highlanders improve their
record to 13-2 for the season.
This win also moves Radford
into second place in the Big
South with a 5-1 record in
conference play. Radford’s 13-2
overall record is also the best
among every other team in the
Big South Conference.
Radford senior Valerie
Gonzalez put forth an impressive
display by recording her third
double-double of the season.
She recorded the match-high 15
kills and 15 digs.
In the first set, Radford got
out in front with a quick 8-3
lead. Campbell battled back
and made it a close battle until
Radford finished strong winning
by a score of 25-21 in the first
set.
In the second set, the
Highlanders continued to
dominate early having a 19-9
lead. Campbell kept battling
back cutting the Radford lead
down to 20-14.
up big and delivered a kill that
sparked the beginning of the end
in set two, as Radford sealed it
up 25-19.
Set three began, and it
seemed Radford was going to
ride their momentum and pull off
the easy win. However, Campbell
came out to an early 6-2 lead.

Radford battled back and
managed a four-point lead of
their own making the set 16-
12. Though, just like before, the
end of the set proved to be a
dogfight.

win their first set of the match
26-24.
Set four started much like set
three with Campbell jumping out
to an early lead forcing Radford
to play from behind. Though,
Radford battled back through
the pressure and managed a 12-
10 lead of their own.
For the rest of the set, the
Highlanders only lost the lead
once, though it was quickly
overcome by back-to-back kills
from Mallory McKnight and
Gonzalez. Set four remained
close, and Campbell refused to
quit showing great spirit though
Radford won the fourth and final
set 26-24.
The fourth set did end with
much excitement as the teams
found themselves tied at 24-24.
Radford Senior Amaya Rousseau
had a controversial kill that
pushed Radford to a 25-24 lead.
The kill leads to a Gonzalez
serve that bounced of Campbells
defending player ending the
final set 26-24 victory for the
Highlanders.
Valerie Gonzalez put forth
an incredible effort that proved
crucial in aiding the Highlanders
victory. Mallory McKnight and
freshman Kylie Tuxford also
have reason to celebrate as well
as both players had over ten kills
throughout the match.
Both teams played well
throughout the match as they
each had ten servicing aces.
Radford did lead the match with
15 more kills (57-42) and 13
more digs (66-53).
Radford will look to extend
their winning streak to three as
they travel to play Big South foe
Charleston Southern Friday, Oct.
12.
So far the team has proven to
be unbeatable away recording a
six-game unbeaten streak when
playing away. The Highlanders
