Actuarial Development Program Highlights

Program Background
• Unum’s Actuarial Development Program has been in place for over 20 years.

Compensation
• Competitive Base Salary & comprehensive employee benefits package
• Performance Based Incentive (PBI) Annual Bonus Potential
• Successful completion of actuarial exam allows for salary increases ranging from $2,500 -
$3,500 per course depending on exam or module.
• Additional salary increases are provided upon attainment of either associateship or
fellowship. An increase of $3,000 will be awarded to students who attain their ASA
designation. Participants attaining their FSA will receive a salary increase of $5,000.

Course Fees and Exam Preparatory Seminars


• Exam fees will be paid at 100% for the first two attempts. Study notes, textbooks and
study aids are fully paid by Unum
• Exam Preparatory Seminars & Review Classes are available that will provide intensive
training for certain exams. Attendance at exam preparation courses is subject to the
approval of the student’s manager. Unum will cover costs related to tuition, travel and
meals for approved seminars.

Paid Study Time


• The company will provide paid study time to candidates in preparation for SOA exams.
SOA exams are rigorous and require a significant commitment of time for study.
• Study time hours will vary by the length and complexity of the exams or module. Paid
study time for initial exam attempts range from 100 hours to 150 hours with reduced
study time available on subsequent attempts.

and experience in different product lines and actuarial disciplines.
• Actuarial candidates will be part of an aggressive promotional track and will make

• Progress in the career path reflects attainment of core business competencies and exam
progress. It is expected that students will pass a minimum of two courses during the
previous four consecutive sittings for which the candidate has made an exam attempt.

Actuarial Summer Internship

General Summary
This is an entry-level position designed to provide exposure to the field of actuarial science as
a career in a life insurance corporation. This position provides technical support to the
actuarial staff as assigned by the manager. While there is no requirement that a candidate
has passed an SOA exam, a strong interest in quantitative work is required.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities


• Prepare and analyze data for use in actuarial experience studies, valuation or pricing
projects
• Assist in maintenance of pricing and underwriting tools
• Assist in maintaining valuation system
• Assist in preparation of financial reports and tax returns
• Learn current pricing models and risk management practices
• Assist in preparation of state filings as needed
• Prepare routine reports
• May perform other duties as assigned

Job Specifications
• Preference given to juniors in college and first year graduate students.
• Extensive coursework in statistics, math, economics, finance or actuarial science
• Limited relevant work experience preferred
• Desire and ability to pass actuarial exams
• Strong math aptitude and problem solving ability
• Computer programming aptitude and knowledge (minimum of 6 months hands-on
statistical programming e.g. SAS, MatLab, Minitab or heavy Excel)
• Solid written and verbal communication skills
• 11 week assignment, full-time 40 hours M-F workweek.

Actuarial Assistant

Unum’s Actuarial Program has been in place for over 20 years. This is generally an entry-level
position; however, incumbent may have some relevant work experience. The work will
require the review of a senior actuary. This position provides technical support to the
actuarial staff as assigned by the manager. Employees in this position will have passed at
least one Society of Actuaries exams and will be committed to attaining Fellowship. There are
no direct reports associated with this position.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities


• Prepare and analyze data for use in actuarial experience studies, valuation or pricing
projects
• Assist in maintenance of pricing and underwriting tools
• Develop reserve factors
• Develop experience analysis reviews
• Assist in maintaining valuation system
• Assist in preparation of financial reports and tax returns
• Provide support for underwriting case specific questions
• Learn current pricing models and risk management practices
• Contribute to product development and re-pricing initiatives
• Assist in preparation of state filings as needed
• Communicate research results to manager both in written format and orally
• Prepare routine reports
• Pursue membership in the Society of Actuaries through the examination process
• May perform other duties as assigned

Job Specifications
• Bachelor degree required; grade point average 3.2 or above
• Credit for at least one actuarial exam; limited relevant work experience preferred
• Desire and ability to pass actuarial exams
• Strong math aptitude and problem solving ability
• Computer programming aptitude and knowledge (minimum of 6 months hands on
statistical programming e.g. Access, Visual Basic, SAS, MatLab, Minitab or heavy Excel)
• Solid written and verbal communication skills
