2017-2018 Annual Report

Perhaps the best-kept secret of Arts for Learning’s longevity
lies in the expertise of our teaching artists. Our teaching
artists undergo a rigorous application process and, once on
the Arts for Learning roster, participate in regular professional
development opportunities to support ongoing improvement
throughout their careers.

Four teaching artists featured in this year’s annual report

were invited to participate in the Teaching Artist Certificate
Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. Through
in-person workshops in New York and online learning sessions,
these teaching artists worked with Teachers College faculty
and fellow teaching artists across disciplines to clarify,
enrich, and advance their individual teaching practices. They
grappled with big issues such as, “What does artistry look
like to me?” and “What shapes students’ artistry?” They also
considered smaller, logistical questions such as, “How does
careful and thorough planning free a responsive, improvisatory

pedagogy?” At the end of the yearlong program, the four

teaching artists implemented their new knowledge and skills in
residencies with select school and community partners across
the state.

Highly-trained teaching artists are a crucial resource to arts-in-

education programs, to arts education and general education,
and to the future of the arts as a whole. Effective teaching
artists, like those on our roster, help provide a tangible link
between the creative process and all kinds of learning, and
make manifest in classroom and community settings the
power of creating, critical thinking, and connecting.

 Growing Their Artistry

Melli Hoppe engaged fourth and fifth grade students at Pine

Elementary in Michigan City in weekly workshops that used
dance and creative movement to reinforce classroom lessons in
literacy and history. The fifth grade students, for example, learned
about the American Revolution through tableau exercises. They
were required to think and work together as actors as they re-
created well-known representations of the American Revolution.

Tamara Loewenthal connected dance with the fourth grade

curriculum on the Underground Railroad for one class at
Fairview Elementary in Bloomington. The students learned about
American folk dance traditions, including hamboning, as well
as the rituals of the art form, such as bowing to partners. The
students performed a group dance at the Lotus Blossoms World
Bazaar, a multicultural arts and education event sponsored by the
Lotus Education & Arts Foundation.
Robin McBride Scott provided innovative creative learning
opportunities to students enrolled in the Toddler Art Program at
Newfields (formerly the Indianapolis Art Museum). The children’s
budding curiosity was stimulated through hands-on activities,
entertaining stories, exploratory art experiences, and gallery
talks. They gained a better understanding of art in the museum’s
collection and were encouraged to explore their own creativity.

Jalynn Simmons served as a veteran teaching artist at Inspiring

Scholars, a summer enrichment program at Phalen Leadership
Academy at School 103 in Indianapolis. She not only led
workshops for students that linked drumming rhythms to basic
mathematical concepts, but also mentored a teaching artist new
to our roster. Together, they designed collaborative lesson plans
that allowed their art forms to overlap on key learning objectives.
