English-language Tests: TOEFL (iBT or ITP) or IELTS

For Indonesian applicants to Fulbright and other programs managed by AMINEF that
require an English-language proficiency test, AMINEF accepts the TOEFL ITP.
Applicants who are shortlisted for an award for degree study at a US university will later
be required to take the TOEFL iBT. AMINEF will supply a free voucher for the iBT and
cover applicants’ transportation to the test site. However, AMINEF does not cover the
cost of the TOEFL ITP required for initial application, please note, nor does it cover the
cost of the equivalent IELTS test. See paragraphs below for details of the differences
among these tests.

The TOEFL test (a name patented by ETS, a non-profit organization in the US that
administers and licenses the test throughout the world) is a widely respected English-
language test, recognized by more than 9,000 colleges, universities and agencies in
more than 130 countries, including Australia, Canada, the UK and the United States.
Almost all US universities require either TOEFL or IELTS (see below) as a condition of
application. In almost all countries in the world, including Indonesia, the TOEFL test is
delivered via the Internet, and hence it is also officially called the TOEFL iBT, or
Internet-based TOEFL. The fee for the TOEFL iBT is rather expensive, at US$190. To
find the dates and places in Indonesia where the TOEFL iBT is given, go to the ETS
Website

In addition, ETS offers through institutions, such as universities, another version of the
TOEFL, which is useful for assessing English-language skills of an institution’s own
students and staff. This is called the Institutional TOEFL, or TOEFL ITP. The TOEFL
ITP is offered to the public in Indonesia as well, through institutions authorized by ETS
and its affiliate in Indonesia, the Indonesian International Education Foundation, or IIEF.
The fee for the test is approximately Rp300,000. For a list of the dates and places
where the TOEFL ITP is given, go to the IIEF Website

In addition, AMINEF and most US universities also accept another test of English
proficiency, the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test, developed
for the Commonwealth countries. In Indonesia the test is administered by the Indonesia
Australia Language Foundation, or IALF. The fee for the test is currently Rp2,850,000.
For a list of dates and places where the IELTS test is given, go to this link at the IALF
Website Please note that AMINEF does not cover the cost of the IELTS test, and that
the test fee amounts quoted above may change over time.

University Admissions Tests: GRE & GMAT

Students applying to universities and colleges in the US for graduate school (master’s
and doctoral degrees) are required to take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), or, for
those seeking the MBA, the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Both
tests measure aptitude and general knowledge. AMINEF does not administer these
tests nor provide test preparation, but AMINEF will assist shortlisted candidates in the
process of test registration and will cover the test fees and transportation costs to the
test site.

US University Requirement

Students applying to universities and colleges in the US for graduate school (Master’s
and Doctoral level) must take certain examinations GRE or GMAT, etc. that measure
aptitude and achievement. International students must also take a test that measures
English language proficiency, iBT. These tests are “standardized,” so that students take
the same test at every test center.

These following tests are not intended for Fulbright scholarship application requirement,
but for the U.S. university requirement. After you have successfully obtained the
scholarship, you will have to take these tests to complete your application to US
universities. We do not encourage you to take the tests before applying for Fulbright
scholarship, but we do encourage you to get familiar with the test and study to achieve
the best score.
AMINEF does not administer these tests nor provide test preparation, but will assist you
in test registration and cover the test fee.

 Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

 Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) – for most subjects
 Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) Subject – for specific eight subjects (see below)
 Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) – for business schools/study for MBA
(Master’s in Business Administration) programs

GRE

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE), like the TOEFL test, is administered by ETS. It
measures your ability to succeed at graduate-school level studies. Your score on the
GRE is one of the factors used by a university in determining whether or not to accept
you into their programs. It is a computer adaptive test (CAT) and it determines your
score based on the correct level of your skill in three skill areas: Analytical Writing,
Verbal Reasoning, and Quantitative Analysis. Although Indonesian applicants are not
required to submit GRE scores when submitting their initial applications to AMINEF,
those shortlisted as candidates for Fulbright MA and PhD awards will later be required
to take the test. Therefore, all applicants are advised to prepare for the test. To learn
more details about the test, scheduling, and registration, see the ETS Website

GMAT

The Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT), another ETS-administered test,

measures your academic ability and is required for university admission in the field of
business and management. The exam measures general verbal, mathematical, and
analytical writing. It does not test business competence or specific subject knowledge.
Although Indonesian applicants are not required to submit GMAT scores when
submitting their initial applications to AMINEF, those shortlisted as candidates for a
Fulbright MA award will later be required to take the test. Therefore, all applicants are
advised to prepare for the test. To learn more details about the test, scheduling, and
registration, see the official GMAT Website
