People who help – Bob Geldof

Bob Geldof is an Irish pop musician who has
raised a lot of money for charity.
Geldof whose mother died when he was young, came
from a very poor family. He was born in Ireland. After
leaving school he lived in England, then in Vancouver, In
Canada, where he wrote about pop music for a magazine.
Back in his home town of Dublin, he and some friends he
had known since childhood formed a successful pop
group called “The boomtown Rats”. In 1984, Bob saw a
film of a famine that was devastating Ethiopia. He had
the idea of producing a record which could be sold to
help the famine victims. The song “Feed the world”
raised £8 million. It was sung by all-star rock group
which Geldof called “Band Aid”.
In July 1985, Geldof organized a huge charity pop
concert for television, which was watched by one and a half billion people. The £70
million the concert raised helped hungry people all over the world. On the day of the
concert Bob Geldof said, “I think this must be the greatest day of my life.”
