Organizational citizenship behaviour
Organ (1988) has defined OCB as "individual behaviour that is discretionary, not directly or
explicitly recognized by the formal reward system, and that in the aggregate promotes the
effective functioning of the organization". Organ's definition of OCB includes three critical
aspects that are very important :
First, OCBs are thought of as discretionary behaviours, they do not seem to be part of the
job description, and are performed by the employee as a result of personal choice.
Second, OCBs go above and beyond that which is an enforceable requirement of the job
description.
Finally, OCBs contribute completely to overall structure effectiveness.
Organ (1988) highlights five specific categories of discretionary behaviour which is stated as
follows:
Altruism: Behavior which is directly and intentionally aimed at helping some specific
person. (e.g., helping new colleague~ and freely giving time to others) is typically
directed toward other individuals but contributes to group efficiency by enhancing
individuals' performance.
Conscientiousness: Carrying out role behaviour they'll beyond the required level. (e.g.
efficiently using the time and going beyond minimum expectations which will enhance
the efficiency of both an individual and the group.
Courtesy: Taking action to prevent problems from occurring by respecting others needs.
(e.g. advance notices, reminders, and communicating appropriate information) helps
prevent problems and facilitates the constructive use of time.
Civic virtue: Behavior designed to increase one's participation in and support of the
organization as whole. (e.g. serving on committees and voluntarily attending functions)
promotes the interests of the organization.
