2018 GENERAL ELECTION ADVISORY: FINAL ABSENTEE UPDATE

REMINDER: Outstanding absentee ballots must either be postmarked by today and arrive at the board of
elections’ office within 10 days of Election Day, or be returned in person to the county board of elections by the
close of the polls tomorrow, to be eligible to be counted. Absentee ballots MAY NOT be returned at polling
locations tomorrow.

COLUMBUS – On the eve of the November 6 General Election, Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted today
announced that at the close of in-person absentee voting, an estimated 1,491,762 absentee ballots had been
requested and 1,313,844 had been cast statewide. This includes more than 9,700 ballot requests from military and
overseas voters, whose absentee ballots started going out on Saturday, September 22, of which more than 5,300
have been cast. Ballots for all other voters started going out on October 10 and more than 1.3 million have been
cast by mail and in person.

• 8,070,917 Ohioans are registered to vote.
• 1,062,241 voters have requested an absentee ballot by mail as of today.

• Of those, 884,323 have been cast.


• 429,521 voters have requested and cast an absentee ballot in person as of today.
• 9,790 military & overseas voters have requested an absentee ballot as of today.
• Of those, 5,356 have been cast.

At this same point during absentee voting in 2014 (/media-center/press-releases/2014/2014-11-04/), nearly one
million absentee ballots had been requested and more than 813,000 had been cast. In total, 846,562 absentee
ballots were cast in the 2014 General Election, including 718,925 by mail and 145,637 in person. In the 2010
General Election, 1,033,350 absentee ballots were cast, including 854,483 by mail and 183,104 in person. Voter
turnout in 2014 was 3,149,876, and in 2010 was 3,956,045.

During the 2018 General Election, voters will decide a statewide ballot initiative (/legislation-and-ballot-
issues/ballot-board/ballot-board-2018/), as well as races for both state and federal offices (/elections/voters/about-
this-election/). There will also be 1,661 local issues (opens in a new window)
(/globalassets/elections/2018/gen/issues.xlsx) across the state and a number of local races, which voters can
obtain additional information on by contacting their county board of elections (/elections/elections-officials/county-
boards-of-elections-directory/).
