Etiquette of
Sleeping
in Islam
Composed by
Ahlus Sunnah Productions
The Messenger of Allah ‫ﷺ‬
said, "Whenever you intend to
go to bed, perform Wudu' as is
done for Salat (prayer)
[Bukhari and Muslim]
The Messenger of Allah ‫ﷺ‬
said, "When any of you goes to
bed, he should shake off (or
dust off) his bedsheet because
he does not know what might
have fallen on it after he had
left it. (Bukhari)
Ali (RA) reported:
The Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬said
to me and to Fatimah, "When
you go to bed, recite: Takbir
(AllahuAkbar) thirty-three
times and Tasbih (Subhan-
Allah) thirty-three times and
Tahmid (Al-hamdu lillah) thirty-
three times."
[Bukhari]
It was narrated from Aa’ishah
that when the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬
went to bed every night, he
would hold his hands together
and blow into them, and recite
into them
Qul HuwaAllaahu Ahad,
Qul a’oodhu bi rabb il-falaq
and
Qul a’oodhu bi rabb il-naas.
Then he would wipe them over
whatever he could of his body,
starting with his head and face
and the front of his body, and
he would do that 3 times.
[Bukhari]
Abu Hurayrah reported: The
Prophet said: “When any one of
you goes to bed, let him clear
his bed by hitting it with his
garment, for he does not know
what may have come onto it.
Then let him lie down on his
right side…” [Saheeh al-Bukharee
and Saheeh Muslim]
It was narrated that ‘Abd-Allaah
ibn Mas’ood said: Whoever
reads Tabaarak allaahi bi
yadihi’l-mulk [i.e., Soorat al-
Mulk] every night, Allaah will
protect him from the torment
of the grave. At the time of the
Messenger of Allaah (peace and
blessings of Allaah be upon
him) we used to call it al-
maani’ah (that which protects).
In the Book of Allaah it is a
soorah which, whoever recites
it every night has done very
well.
Narrated by al-Nasaa’i, 6/179;
classed as hasan by al-Albaani
in Saheeh al-Targheeb wa’l-
Tarheeb, 1547.
In a hadith narrated by Abu
Mas’ud, the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said,
“If somebody recited the last two
Verses of Surat Al-Baqara at
night, that will be sufficient for
him.”
(Bukhari)
The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said, “By
reciting it (Ayat- ul-Kursi), there
will be a guardian appointed
over you from Allah who will
protect you during the night,
and Satan will not be able to
come near you until morning”
[Bukhari]
The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: whoever
recites 100 verses of the qur’an
in a night, he will be rewarded
as though he worshipped allah
(SWT) all night long.
[Saheeh (Saheeh al-Jami])
