CHAPTER I
Occupational Internship Program
(East West Seed Company)
2

INTRODUCTION

This On-the-Job-Training (OJT) activity was conducted from September

2017 to December 15, 2017 at East West Seed Company. The training was done

to expose the students to the actual working environment that would give them

authentic experiences about the career they wish to pursue. During those times,

they were given opportunities to widen their knowledge in terms of

entrepreneurial, agricultural, and cooperative background. The training also

provided hands- on experiences to upgrade the skills of the students in different

areas.

On the job training is one method by which students is given a chance to

apply the theories and computations that they have learned from the school. It

also helps the students to acquire relevant knowledge and skills by performing

actual work setting. Colleges and universities require their students to undergo

such training within specific number of hours as part of curriculum. For the

students an OJT or Internship Program provides opportunities to go through the

actual methodologies of a specific job using the real tools, and documents.

Occupational Internship Program (OIP) is still widely in use today. In fact,

it is probably the most popular method of training because it requires only a

person who knows how to do the task, and the tools the person uses to do the

task. It may not be the most effective or the most efficient method at times, but it

is normally the easiest to arrange and manage. Because the training takes place

on the job, it can be highly realistic and no transfer of learning is required. It is

3

often inexpensive because no special equipment is needed other than what is

normally used on the job. One drawback is that OIP takes the trainer and

materials out of production for the duration of the training time. In addition, due to

safety or other production factors, it is prohibitive in some environment.

4

OBJECTIVES

General Objectives

The main objective of this On-the-Job-Training is to acquaint the students

formally to a real life work place environment. This will be help to explore the

relationship between the knowledge and skills acquired in college with those

recquired in the working situations. This training help and support the student’s

counseling skill through the training that they gain from their work at school and

intensive supervision. We strive to provide an atmosphere that is professional,

supportive, and growth-oriented in which each student’s developing identity as a

counselor-in-training is valued and fostered appropriately.

Specific Objectives

1. To develop the skills of the students in agricultural and management skills

in certain chosen farming enterprises.
2. To develop the cooperation and leadership potential of the students.
3. To develop personalities and social relationships
4. To apply the skills learned inside the campus in other farm agencies.

Vine Train

This kind of technique helps young shoot to have a strong, healthy and

well-shaped vines, vine training is an everyday routine that trainees need to

accomplish, because the shoots of those pole sitao in the area are growing too

fast.

Pruning

Like tomatoes, eggplant benefits from staking and pruning. Unlike

tomatoes which are pruned to a single stalk, eggplant is pruned to three main

branches. Prune periodically throughout the growing season and severely if fruit

production drops off for a new flush of leaves and blossoms. Trainees also prune

those stem which is infected by stem borer.

Mulching

Plastic mulch is a product used, in a similar fashion to mulch, to

suppress weeds and conserve water in crop production and landscaping. Certain

plastic mulches also act as a barrier to keep methyl bromide, both a powerful

fumigant and ozone deplete, in the soil. Crops grow through slits or holes in thin

plastic sheeting. Plastic mulch is often used in conjunction with drip irrigation.

Some research has been done using different colors of mulch to affect crop

growth. This method is predominant in large-scale vegetable growing, with

millions of acres cultivated under plastic mulch worldwide each year. Disposal of

plastic mulch is cited as an environmental problem; however, technologies exist

to provide for the recycling of used/disposed plastic mulch into viable plastic

resins for re-use in the plastics manufacturing industry

Mulching improves nutrient and water retention in the soil. Encourages

favorable soil microbial activity and worms. Mulch also helps to retain moisture,

prevent soil erosion, control weeds and it adds nutrients to the soil.

11

Weeding

A weed may be defined as any plant or vegetation that interferes with the

objectives of farming or forestry, such as growing crops, grazing animals or

cultivating forest plantations. A weed may also be defined as any plant growing

where it is not wanted.

Plate# 4. Removing weeds outside the plastic mulch

Sorting

Physical handling can have a drastic effect on the postharvest quality and

shelf life of most harvested fruits and vegetables. Some of the handling practices

which include harvesting, precooling, cleaning and disinfecting, sorting and

grading, packaging, transportation, and storage are discussed below. In

agriculture, postharvest handling is the stage of crop production immediately

following harvest, including cooling, cleaning, sorting and packing. The instant a

crop is removed from the ground, or separated from its parent plant, it begins to

deteriorate.

Fertilizer and Pesticide Management

By providing nutrients like nitrogen, fertilizers help plants thrive despite the

threat of weeds and disease. Organic fertilizers, like manure, improve the fertility

of soil by feeding microorganisms in the soil, reducing erosion and keeping soil

well hydrated. The benefits of pesticides include increased food production,

increased profits for farmers and the prevention of diseases. Although pests
13

consume or harm a large portion of agricultural crops, without the use

of pesticides, it is likely that they would consume a higher percentage.

Plate# 7. Application of Fertilizer and Pesticide

Harvesting

Harvesting is the process of gathering a ripe crop from the fields. Reaping

is the cutting of grain or pulse for harvest, typically using a scythe, sickle, or

reaper. On smaller farms with minimal mechanization, harvesting is the most

labor-intensive activity of the growing season.
