Early Voting Sites to be Opened on Duval Campuses

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Early voting sites will be open on the University of North Florida and

Edward Waters College campuses for the upcoming general election according to Greg Clark,

director of outreach for the Duval County Supervisor of Elections office.

Campuses were not allowed to hold early voting sites previously, but U.S. District Judge

Mark Walker decided in July of this year that the prohibition was stifling young voters.

According to city council records, legislation was introduced in August for the city to provide

$30,000 to open the voting sites on the campuses.

Clark said residents of Duval County must be registered to vote by Oct. 9 in order to

participate in the upcoming midterm election. Florida statutes mandate voters bring some form of

photo identification to the polls in order to vote.

Clark said “Voters without acceptable ID can vote via provisional ballot.”

According to Clark, Duval County will have 20 early voting sites open Monday, Oct. 22

through Sunday, Nov. 4, whereas in the past there were only 19 sites. The sites will be open from

10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Monroe Street site, however, will be open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays

and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends.

“We don’t want everyone to wait until election day to cast a ballot,” said Clark. “We

want people to come out to the polls early. That’s our emphasis.”
