Yoga in Kazakstan
ICCR SCHOLARSHIPS
Indian Cultural Centre, Astana completed the formalities for the ICCR Scholarship Programme
for the academic year 2009-2010. Thirteen students under the General Cultural Scholarship
Scheme and Cultural Exchange Programme went to India to take up their courses at various
Universities and institutions. The students were briefed and provided with the necessary
information. The ICCR, Delhi and its Regional Offices in Mumbai and Pune, met the students on
arrival and assisted them in admission formalities and in settling down.
“Astana” magazine, which will be bringing out a special issue devoted to India, interviewed
Ambassador of India and later visited the Indian Cultural Centre to photograph the Yoga class in
session. The cameraman took photographs of the students performing various Yoga asanas. Some
students were interviewed about their experience of learning and practicing Yoga. The Yoga
teacher Mr. Kundan Kumar performed some difficult asanas after which he explained the
benefits of doing Yoga which leads to the general well being of the practitioner.
Director, ICC who was also interviewed for the magazine spoke about the Centre’s activities and
explained why Yoga classes are conducted free of charge. The other programmes held earlier
were also discussed.
Propagation of Yoga
General asanas, pranayamas and meditation were taught and performed and the basic rules of
conduct for practicing Yoga were emphasized. Yoga as a subject was discussed and individual
interaction encouraged so that students could try to achieve the maximum personal benefits and
experience well being. Written information about Yoga was provided to the students.
Teaching of Yoga
The Yoga teacher Mr. Kundan Kumar returned to India on completion of his three year term at
the Indian Cultural Centre, Astana.
Dr. Harish B.K., the new Yoga teacher, accompanied by his wife, Dr Savita, arrived in Astana on
27 July, 2009. After joining the Indian Cultural Centre, he conducted the first Yoga class on 30
July, 2009.
Director, ICC and Dr. Harish B.K. visited the National Academic Library on 30 July, 2009 and
was introduced to some of the senior staff members of the National Academic Library, Astana
who have been keen learners of Yoga. They welcomed him and expressed their gratitude to the
Embassy of India for arranging free Yoga classes at the Library. As many of the staff members
are on summer vacation, Yoga classes will commence in the Library in September 2009.
