TRIGONOMETRY
We have already described reciprocal identities and we are now going to discuss
various identities and basic conceptual formulae related to this topic.
Pythagorean (Square) identities: -
sin2𝜃 + cos2𝜃 = 1
1 + tan2𝜃 = sec2𝜃
1 + cot2𝜃 = cosec2𝜃
Note: - There are only three Pythagorean identities the other forms are just the same
arranged in different order.
Pythagorean Identities in Radical Form:
sin 𝜃 = ±√1 − 𝑐𝑜𝑠 2 𝜃

tan 𝜃 = ±√𝑠𝑒𝑐 2 𝜃 − 1

cot 𝜃 = ±√𝑐𝑜𝑠𝑒𝑐 2 𝜃 − 1
Ratio or Quotient Identities:
𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃
tan 𝜃 = , cot 𝜃 =
𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃 𝑠𝑖𝑛𝜃

sin 𝜃 = cos 𝜃. tan 𝜃 , cos 𝜃 = sin 𝜃. cot 𝜃

Ranges of trigonometric functions:
-1 ≤ sin 𝜃 ≤ 1 -1 ≤ cosec 𝜃 and cosec𝜃 ≤ 1
-1 ≤ cos 𝜃 ≤ 1 -1 ≤ sec 𝜃 and sec𝜃 ≤ 1
−∞≤ tan 𝜃 ≤ ∞ −∞≤ cot 𝜃 ≤ ∞
