THE PEACE MESSENGER NOVEMBER 2018

Called to Receive and Share God’s Peace

Grace and Peace to You Dear sisters and brothers in Christ!

Some highlights from this past month…. Celebrating Jesse Larson’s Confirmation. Jesse blessed us
with the message that day recounting stories from his confirmation years and most importantly proclaiming
that in his baptism he is a Child of God and marked with the Cross of Christ Forever! And he was the
Assisting Minister for the 1st time… well done Jesse and thank you for sharing your Wednesday afternoons
with me for the last three years!

What fun we had this these last four weeks playing our Kazoo’s for the sending song. Everybody
has been a good sport as we open ourselves to praise God in different ways!

Thank You to the Budget Committee of outgoing treasurer Luann Teige, incoming treasurer Tony
Garland, Amy Sedin Stewardship council member and Kathy Johnson church secretary. These faithful
servants spent a Monday evening not finishing until nearly 10:30pm until we had a mission plan (budget)
prepared for our Sunday, November 11th Annual Meeting.

Another highlight – welcoming Amelia Opsahl into the Church Militant (baptized Christians) on All Saints
Sunday! Thank You Amelia for your presence that day in your baptism as we also remembered the saints
who joined the Church Triumphant this past year.

Blessings Grow and Grateful this month of November!

Fight the Flu

“A wise man is mightier than a strong man, and a man of knowledge is more powerful than a strong man”.
Proverbs 24:5

We are heading into the flu season again. If you recall, last year was especially severe with the dominance
of the H3N2 virus. In fact last year’s flu season was one of the deadliest in the last 40 years. An estimated
80,000 people died, including 180 children. This year the vaccine will be quadrivalent meaning it will
hopefully match the four common circulating viruses including an additional B virus component.

The 3 main ways to fight the flu are to:

· Get your flu vaccine. Everyone age 6 months and older should receive the vaccine which is
available in a nasal spray as well as the traditional injectable vaccine. Check with your doctor to
find out which flu vaccine is appropriate for you. A higher dose vaccine is again recommended for
people 65 years of age and older. Remember, it takes about 2 weeks to be effective. Even though it
may not prevent the flu, it can reduce the severity of the symptoms.

· Prevent the spread of the virus. Cover your cough or sneeze-viruses can travel up to 6 feet! Wash
your hands frequently and avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Use an alcohol-based hand
sanitizer if soap is not available. Clean and disinfect surfaces-viruses can live on nonporous
surfaces (wood, plastic, metal) up to 2 days and on porous surfaces (tissue, clothing, paper) for up to
12 hours. Avoid close contact with sick people. During the church service you may want to avoid
shaking hands or use the hand sanitizer in the pews after shaking hands. We plan to continue to hold
hands for the Lord’s Prayer unless there is an increase in flu incidence and severity. The peak time
for the flu is between December and February. If you are sick, remember you can infect others 1
day before symptoms develop and up to 7 days after becoming sick. Stay home for at least 24 hours
after your fever is gone.

· Ask your doctor about using an antiviral drug. If you’re young and healthy you probably don’t need
one. However, those who are at greater risk for serious flu complications should be treated. The
drug works best when given within 2 days of the start of the flu but can still be beneficial when
started later. A new antiviral drug, Xofluza, was just approved by the FDA on Oct. 24th.

SEASON’S GREETINGS FROM KIN

Yes, it is a bit early to think about Christmas, but at KIN we like to plan ahead
to avoid that last minute panic. With that in mind we are asking our area
churches to consider doing a little early grocery shopping before that panic
sets in. We are collecting donations of canned goods (veggies, fruit, soups,
pasta sauces, etc), dry goods (mac and cheese, noodles, cereals), jellies (we
have quite a bit of peanut butter already but can always use a bit more),
taco-kits, mashed potato buds...anything you think you would like to eat, we
would love to put in our Christmas food baskets.

So this is a good time to start watching for food ads and maybe picking up a
couple extra items when you are at the grocery store. Last year KIN served
41 families (112 children) in the Northwestern school district. There seems to
be so much sorrow and trouble in the world at large that it is easy to feel
helpless to change anything. It is a great blessing to be able to change
something in our own community. We hope and pray you will join our effort,
and we thank you so much in advance for your assistance!

You can either bring your donations to St. Anthony Catholic Church office on
Monday or Thursday from 9-12 or anytime to the Lake Nebagamon Library.
Or please call Cathy Ketola at 715-374-3796 and she will make arrangements
to pick up your items.

Thank you and Merry Christmas in advance!!!

Our November 10th Holiday Bazaar is coming up fast! The Evening Circle is busy planning the details. The
decision was made to focus on what has been the most popular in the past- our cookie walk and sale of our
baked goods. People are also looking for stocking-stuffer gifts and other low-cost items. New this year will
be a Chinese auction featuring gift baskets and possibly a couple rented tables. We have a quilt and a large
gift basket from Gronk’s for buying chances to win drawing. Please continue to bake, can, sew, and make
craft items as you have in the past and plan to help us go all out for our cookie walk, baked goods, and gift
baskets. We’ll also have a thrift store as we did last year. We will make final preparations on Sunday,
November 4th when we will assemble cookie boxes, set up tables, and bake cookies. Lunch will be served.
Please see the sign-up sheet in the Fellowship Hall. If you have questions just ask one of the Evening Circle
members- Luann Teige, Jan Stevens, Arlene Erickson, Lois Burger, or Cindy Sapik.

More Parish Nurse News: The parish nurses are now selling Kwik Trip car wash cards in addition to
Kwik Trip and Holiday gas cards. You can get 5 Ultimate $10 car washes for $40. These cards are a great gift
for the hard-to-buy-for people in your lives.

The Peace Parish Nurses are starting a bereavement card ministry to provide comfort and
support to people in our congregation whose immediate family members have died. Cards will
be sent at the time of death, at 3-month intervals and at special times such as the loved one’s
birthday or wedding anniversary during the first year following a death of a spouse, parent,
child, or sibling. An appropriate Care Notes® pamphlet will be sent with the card. We recently
applied for and received a $150 mini-grant from Northern Waters Parish Nurse Ministry to start
the card ministry. We welcome people to be part of this special ministry. Let Jan Stevens know
if you want to be involved. Also makes us aware of congregation members whose loved ones
have died.
