Stages in the lesson

Purpose: to greet the students, to check who is absent and to start the lesson.
Timing: 5’
Activity description and instructions as they will be said to students:
The teacher gets into the classroom and greets students.
 Good morning, everyone.

 Good morning!

 How are you today?

 Fine, and you?

 Great, thanks!

After that, the teacher checks who is absent for class. Finally, she writes the date on the
board.
 What’s the date today?

 It’s Monday! …10th…

 Thanks. Monday 10th September

Purpose: Warm-up. To introduce the topic

Timing: 45’

Activity description and instructions as they will be said to students:

The teacher asks students to start the Kahoot app to play a game on sports.
 We are going to start the class with a game. Let’s start the Kahoot app so we can
play. Last week I asked you to download an app. Could you do it? Today, we are
going to use it.

The teacher turns her app on and gives students a pin code to practice using it.
 First, you have to enter this pin code 778083 (the teacher points at a code in her
computer) then, you have to write a nickname.

 We are going to learn how to use it. The screen of your mobile phone is going to
be a joystick. You have to look at the computer screen and press the correct
colour in your mobile phone. For example, if the correct answer is in the yellow
box, you press the yellow box in your phone. Let’s give it a try!

The teacher starts the game and students participate and learn to use the app.
 Now that you know how to use it, we are going to play a game on sports. This is
a competition! Are you ready? Here you have the pin code! It’s 851151
Students play the game. After that, the teacher invites them to play another game, but
this time on a new topic.
 Well Done! I hope you liked the app. Now we are going to play a game, but this
time we are not going to use the mobile phones.

The teacher shows them some cards.

 Here I have some sentences. But I cut them in halves. You have to read
everything and match the halves. All the sentences are about… the Olympic
Games!

The teacher gives students some minutes to match. When they finish, she asks them to
read the sentences. After each sentence they all talk or make comments.

Sentences:
The last Olympic Games were in Rio de Janeiro
The last Olympic Games were in 2016
The next Olympic games are in Tokyo 2020;
Olympic athletes train hard.
Olympic athletes have got a special diet.
Olympic athletes often have ordinary jobs or study.
The Paralympic Games are competitions for people with different
disabilities.
Paralympic athletes train really hard.
Paralympic athletes often compete with extra elements.
In the Paralympic Games there are different categories: physical impairment,
visual impairment, and intellectual
disability.

 Great! You know a lot about the topic! Today we are going to read about a girl
who visited the Olympic Basketball Training Centre. So, open your books on
page 16, please.

Transition: The teacher gives students a minute to open their books and find the correct
page. The teacher shows them her book in that page.

Development
Activity 1
Purpose: To read about Paralympic Athletes and practise vocabulary

Timing: 30’

Activity description and instructions as they will be said to students:

 This is Olivia’s blog. You are going to listen and read it. Are you ready?

The teacher plays the audio (track 37), and then she explains the activity.
 I know there is a lot of new vocabulary, but you have to find two things she won
and one thing she didn’t win. Come on! You can do it!

The teacher gives students some minutes to look for the answers. After a few minutes,
she asks the group about their findings and writes them on the board.
 So, what are the two things she won?

 …The contest… her team won the basketball game

 Excellent! And what is the thing she didn’t win?

 …a wheelchair.

 Well done! Is the text difficult? Let’s read it together to check vocabulary. So,
grab a pencil to write down the words you don’t know.

After reading the text again, the teacher asks students to solve some exercises.
 Very good. Do you have any questions about the text? No? ok, now you are
going to do exercises 2 and 3. The teacher points at exercise 2 and 3 in her book.
Let’s see. Here, you have to check or tick three things you know about Olivia,
things that are in the text. And in exercise 3, you have to answer some questions.
You can do everything alone or in pairs or groups.

After students have finished, they all check together, asking different students to read
their answers. The teacher writes their answers on the board and encourages them to
write full answers in exercise 3.
Activity 2
Purpose: To revise superlative adjectives

Timing: 15’
Activity description and instructions as they will be said to students:

The teacher sticks photos and information about some athletes. She asks students to read
the information while she gives them some pieces of paper with cut outs of sentences.
 Look at these people. They are athletes. Do you know them? We are going to
make sentences about them using superlatives. We are going to work in pairs.
You have to put the pieces of paper in order to make sentences about these
people. For example: Look at their height. Who is the tallest?

 Martin Del Potro

 Very good. So, Martin Del Potro is the tallest athlete.

The teacher gives students some time to solve the exercise. And then she asks them to
read the sentences. Each pair reads one sentence.

Martin Del Potro Roger Federer Novac Dokovic

23/09/1988 08/08/1981 22/05/1987
height 1.98 1.85 1.88
weight 90kg 80kg 77kg
Money earned $22millon $116million $114million
Ranking 3rd 2nd 6th

Sentences:
Roger is the oldest athlete.
Martin is the youngest athlete.

Martin is the tallest tennis player.

Roger is the shortest tennis player.

Martin is the heaviest player.

Novac is the lightest player.

Roger is the richest athlete

Martin is the poorest athlete.

Roger is the best tennis player.

Novac is the worst tennis player.
Activity 3
Purpose: To practise superlative adjectives

Timing: 20’

Activity description and instructions as they will be said to students:

The teacher suggests a little competition.

 We are going to make a competition. Do you know the Guinness Book of
Records? What is it?

If students don’t know the answer, the teacher explains that every person who has a
special ability or possession can call the managers of ‘the Guinness Book of Records’
and if they are the winners, they can appear in the book. But it is possible they know
something as many record holders have been in Argentinian TV programmes like
‘Susana Gimenez’ programme.
 I’m going to give you a quiz. First you have to complete the sentences using the
superlative form of the adjective in brackets. Then, you have to choose an
answer. It’s guessing… Please, do not use your mobile phones to look for the
answers! That’s cheating!

The teacher gives each group a copy of the quiz and gives students some minutes to
work on their answers.
When the groups finish, the teacher asks a member of one of the groups to read the
sentence with the correct superlative form of the adjective while showing them a Power
Point presentation with the correct answers and some photos of the records.
For example:
Slide 1:
__________________ limousine (heavy)
 Karen, can you read sentence 1, please?

 The heaviest limousine.

 Let’s see. The teacher clicks on the slide and the answer appears.

The heaviest limousine (heavy)

 Very good Karen. Now, tell me your answer… is it option a, b or c?

 B!

 The teacher writes the answer on the board.

 Ok. Now Oriana, what’s your answer? A, b or c?

 C!

The teacher writes the answer on the board.

 Well. Let’s see. The teacher clicks the slide and the answer appears. There is a
photo of the record and a short paragraph taken from Guinness’ web page and
some extra photos.

The teacher and students check which group is right. That group gets a point. They do
the same with all the slides and records.
After the game, the teacher congratulates the winner team/ group.
