a lower flow rate is required
to pre-compress the low

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

High Self Priming Speeds

• Customer Benefits
– Reduced System costs
– Smaller installation package
• Eliminate Charge pumps and pressurized
reservoirs.
– Pumps will work well in JIC style units.
• As always a positive inlet condition is best
practice.

PE Pump Controls

• Load Sense Control

– Load sense control will adjust output flow to maintain
a constant pressure drop across an orifice
• Pressure Compensator
– The pressure compensator control will limit pump
outlet pressure to a predetermined level and adjust
pump outlet flow to the level needed to maintain the
set pressure.
• Remote Pressure Compensator
– Same as the pressure compensator , except that the
adjustment is done with a remotely located relief
valve instead of at the pump control.
• Torque Limiter Control
– Will adjust flow to limit the input torque demand of
the pump

Pressure Compensator

„ At pressures below
compensator setting, flow
remains maximum.

„ When compensator setting is

reached, the pump de-strokes
to maximum required (or zero)
flow. The pump will maintain

GPM
maximum pressure until
system pressure drops.

Remote Pressure Compensator

„ At pressures below the remote

relief valve setting, flow
remains maximum.
„ When relief valve setting is
reached, the pump de-strokes
to actual required (or zero)
flow. The pump will maintain

GPM

until the system pressure
drops.

Remote Compensator

Remote compensator
allows control of pump
from a remote location
from a relief valve
located in a different
location.

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

Remote Compensator

Remote compensator
allows control of pump
from a remote location.
With addition of a 2
way valve the pump
can be forced into a
low pressure
(differential spring)
stand-by condition.
Less noisy (by 1/3), no
heat from case drain,
power savings

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

PE Remote Pressure Control

Good things to Know

• Standard Remote Compensator Differential Spring setting is 300 psi.

This pressure is additive to the setting of the remote relief valve.
• Standby Pressure is the pressure level the pump will maintain with
the remote signal line vented to tank. This is typically 10-20 psi
higher than the differential setting.
• The remote control pilot flow is about 1 GPM.
• The “ PA” pressure compensator control can be converted to a “RA”
remote control by removing the plug in the “X” Port and connecting
that port to a remote relief valve.

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

Load Sense Control

„ The load sense comp will

increase or decrease the
output flow to maintain a
constant delta across the
load orifice. This means

GPM
that regardless of load
conditions the flow will
remain constant for a
given orifice opening. PSI

PE Load Sense Control

Good things to Know

• Standard Load Sense Delta P setting is 300 psi.

• Standby Pressure is the pressure level the pump will maintain with
no load sense signal. This is typically 10-20 psi higher than the Load
Sense Delta P setting
• Higher LS spring setting = faster response,
but lower system efficiency
• The load sense bleed option (LB) will vent the load sense signal to
allow the pump to go to low pressure standby when there is no flow
demand. This function is typically and best accomplished in the load
sense system valve, but if the system valve does not have this
feature, it can be ordered in the pump. The disadvantage of having
the bleed in the pump is that there is a continuous loss of this bleed
flow through the pump control even when the pump is operating
normal.

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

Converting from Load Sense
P2/3-075
P2/3-105 Control to Pressure Compensator
P2 pumps with LA load sense control can be converted to PA
pressure compensator control by removing the plug in the load
sense spool and by plugging the X port.

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

Torque Limiter Control

• The torque limiter control will vary pump displacement so that a

desired maximum input torque level to the pump is maintained.
Typically this desired torque level is the maximum torque available
for the hydraulic functions on a machine…the intent is to have the
pump controlled to use the input power available most efficiently…
when high force is needed the pump will provide high pressure;
when high speed is needed the pump will provide high flow.

Torque
Control
Cartridge

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

Torque Limiter Control
• The Torque Limiter Control is achieved by the addition of a special
cartridge relief valve that controls the maximum pressure in the load
sense port . The torque control cartridge relief valve setting is a
function of the pump displacement . Since Torque is directly related
to pressure and displacement , this valve acts as a torque limiter.

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

Torque Limiter Control

Good things to Know

• The “TA” torque control is really three controls in one because it also
has a load sense control and a pressure limiter control function
included.

• The pump will be controlled in the load sense mode at flow &
pressure conditions below the torque setting . Once the input torque
setting is reached , the pump will be controlled by the torque control.

• The maximum pump pressure is controlled by the pressure limiter.

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

PE Torque Limiter Control

PE - TA (Torque, Load Sensing

and Maximum Pressure
Control)

Pressure, internal feed,

to the torque control

Hydraulic Pump/Motor Division

Torque Limiter Control
• The Torque Control relief valve spring tension is adjusted by the
position of the link piston, which is connected to the swashplate. As
the pump destrokes , the spring tension is increased and the load
sense pressure is allowed to go to a higher level before the torque
control opens.
