Lesson Plan

Innovative Inventions
Learners:

Grades 3-5

Goals:

Students will collaboratively research about the most influential inventions and create a
Prezi presentation to teach their peers their assigned topic. Students will take on the
role as teacher and each group will learn about the lesson on Inventions through the
research and Prezi presented by their peers. They will then be able to retrieve the
information they learned and assess their knowledge through a final Kahoot!.

Objectives:

The students will research two inventions and procure information about them to be
presented in a Prezi.
The students will work collaboratively as they research and create the Prezi.
Students will identify and recall key details about the inventions and inventors.
Students will effectively present their Prezi to the class.

New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards Grades 3-5:

Anticipatory Set/ Motivation:

Present my Prezi presentation that introduces what an invention is, the most influential
inventions and my personal favorite inventions that are important in my day-to-day life:
https://prezi.com/view/VL5cDAnrU7tvLj7DhWPs/.

Some questions will be presented for open discussion and reflection:

 Name one invention that you cannot live without
 How did (randomly pick an invention on the list displayed on Prezi) change the
way people live? Society? The world?
 How has (the invention mentioned) changed since it was first invented?
 Would you be able to live without: the light bulb? the airplane? the telephone?
vaccines? penicillin? the toilet flusher? the pen? Are any inventions not entirely
necessary for a fulfilling life? Consider Amish communities where many
technologies are avoided.

Teacher Directed Activities:

After the Prezi, students will be divided into groups of 4-5. Each group will be assigned
two inventions and they will have to come up with one invention not listed that they
consider worthy of being on the top 10 inventions list.

Explicit Modeling:

Assign roles. Two will research:

 name of inventor
 date of invention
 up to at least 3 facts about invention
 answer why this invention is purposeful and/or influential
The other two students will be responsible for the creation of the Prezi with the
information gathered from their group. The rubric will be given as guidance to
ascertain all needs are met.

As a group, students will review their final product and make any needed
changes.
Also, each group will submit 3 questions that pertain to their research that the
teacher will later use in a final review Kahoot! challenge.

Guided Practice:

Students will self-learn the Prezi process. Teacher will be present for assistance.
They can loosely model from the Prezi used in the introduction of the lesson.

Independent Practice:

Students will review each group’s Prezi presentation with a rubric that assesses
preparation, design, content, knowledge and audience interest. Students will also
take notes on key points made during each presentation.

Closure:

Discuss as a class the key details of the lesson: the inventions and inventors shared in
each presentation.
Discuss as a class what they liked/disliked about their own presentation in comparison
to their peers.
Engage students in a review with a challenge Kahoot! quiz to be played individually.

Evaluation/Assessment:

Success is measured by the rubric (provided), the Kahoot! scores, and overall
participation in class discussions.
