ASSIGNMENT-6

Date: 2 November 2017 Submission Date: 8 November 2017

1. For a beam of length l, having elliptic cross section (major axis dimension, a and minor
axis dimension, b) and subjected to a transverse load P, determine the shear stress
components  xz and  yz . Specialize the stress components for

a) x = 0
b) y = 0
c) a = b (circular cross section)
2. Write boundary condition for a rectangular cross section with dimensions 2a  2b
(Figure 1) subjected to a transverse load P. Also derive formulations for shear stresses.
3. Consider a cross section the boundary of which consists of two vertical sides y  a and

to hyperbolas (Figure 2) with equation 1   x 2  y 2  a 2 . Determine the maximum

shear stress.

4. For a non-symmetric cross section of the shape of an isosceles triangle (Figure 3), the
boundary of the cross section is given by the equation
 y  ax  2a  y  tan x  2a  y  tan   0
Derive the expressions for shear stresses  xz and  yz . Also determine the maximum shear

stress.
5. For a propped column shown in Figure 4, derive the expression for critical load, Pcr.

6. Derive the Euler-Lagrange differential equation and the necessary kinematic (geometric)
and natural boundary conditions for the prismatic cantilever column with a linear spring
(spring constant  ) attached to its free end (Figure 5).

Figure 6 Figure 7
7. A propped column with the top rotationally clamped and the bottom pinned is subjected
to a uniformly distributed axial compression as shown in Figure 6. Determine q cr .
8. Determine the critical load of column shown in Figure 7 by using Rayleigh method.
Assume y   1  cos x / 2l  and compute for I 2 / I1  5 and l1 / l 2  4 . Check the
result by that obtained from Differential equation method.
