Cholecystitis is an inflammation of the gallbladder that is usually caused by gallstones. There are two main types: calculous cholecystitis caused by stones blocking the cystic duct and acalculous cholecystitis caused by infection without stones. The most common cause is gallstones which can form as the bile in the gallbladder becomes concentrated. Cholecystitis affects women more than men and risk increases after age 40. As nursing students, the authors want to understand how to manage and care for patients with cholecystitis so they can provide the right plan of care as future nurses.

Cholecystitis is an inflammation of the gallbladder wall and nearby abdominal lining.
Cholecystitis is usually caused by a gallstone in the cystic duct, the duct that connects the gallbladder to the hepatic duct. There are 2 types of Cholecystitis. There are Calculous Cholecystitis, inflammation is caused by an obstructed calculi in the cystic duct, and Acalculous Cholecystitis, inflammation caused by infection. Many people are unaware of their gallbladder. The gallbladder tends to be taken for granted – ignored of the proper care and conditioning. Lifestyle together with heredity, sex, race and age are just some factors that leave a room for gallbladder complications to occur. This study is about cholecystitis. The most common cause of cholecystitis is gallstones (90% of the cases). The bile becomes concentrated in the gallbladder. The later causes irritation and is probably the leading cause of inflammation. Cholecystitis affects women more often than men and is more likely to occur after age 40. People who have a history of gallstones are at increased risk for cholecystitis. In CVMC, there were 59 cases of cholecystitis last 2009. 36 of which is female majority of them have an age of 40 y/o and above. According to DOH, Cholecystitis is not included in the Top 10 causes of Mortality and Morbidity cases here in Tuguegarao. Despite the cholecystitis’ low incidence, we would like to give credit and to know more of the nature and function of the gallbladder. Much often this small organ is not given importance. Thus they are in a pursuit for knowledge to be able to impart it to our audience. Furthermore, this case is quite interesting since it does not always affect only females and elderly. It can affect everyone. It can be alarming since many people are confused and unaware of the symptoms presented. As teen-agers living in a fast-phased world and governed by schedules, we too are predisposed to lifestyle modification – especially diet and food preferences which can contribute to the disease. With this study, we hope to apply our learning in taking care not only to our patients but also to ourselves. As nursing students and future nurses, we want to understand and appreciate more on what is happening to a patient with cholecystitis. Consequently, we are interested on what will be the necessary management that will be given. Through this, we are hoping that we will be able to find the right plan of care and sound interventions. All in all, these will help us to become efficient nurses and better persons later on.
