INTRODUCTION
The basic function of the shock absorber is to absorb and dissipate the impact
kinetic
energy to the extent that accelerations imposed upon the airframe are reduced to a
tolerable
level
Hydraulic shock absorbers are the integral part of the suspension system of the
vehicles. There are different types of shock absorbers designed in a different way
to smooth out the damp or the jerks and give smooth and controlled ride.
Hydraulic shock absorber works in two cycles that is extension cycle and
compression cycle. In both the cycles the shock absorber functions by displacing
the fluid.
The upward and the downward movement of the piston, forces the oil through the
holes. The in and out movement of the piston changes the oil volume. When the
volume is low, the excess oil is forced back in the oil reservoir via the base valve.
The outward movement of the piston, creates a vacuum and a volume of oil that is
displaced is drawn back into the piston through an orifice in the base valve.
