1969 Porsche 908/2 - #908/02-018 Kurze Flunder

Built by the Porsche racing department in

May 1969 as a Porsche 908/2 Short
Flunder version, chassis 018 was entered
by the factory in June for the 1969
Nurburgring 1000kms race in the hands
of works driver pairing - Rolf Stommelen
and Hans Herman. On its debut race
chassis 018 finished 2nd place overall,
beaten only by another works entered
908/2 (chassis 06) driven by Siffert and
Redman.

The car was then sold directly by the

racing department in October 1969 to
regular, racing customer Freiherr Karl
von Wendt for his BG Racing Team. The
team first sent the car in January 1970 to
Buenos Aires to compete in the Buenos
Aires 1000km race on the 11th and then
ran it again a week later in the Buenos
Aires 200 mile race on the 18th – driven in
both races by works driver Willi Kauhsen
and Herbert Schultze.

After Buenos Aires, the car returned to

Europe and in May 1970, was once again
entered into the prestigious round of the
International Manufacturers’ World
Championship – Nurburgring 1000km,
driven this time by Von Wendt himself
and fellow works driver, Gerhard Koch.
This time the pair finished 7th overall with
2 overall victory going to the new, factory-
developed, Salzburg entered Porsche
908/3 spyders. BG Racing are known to
have entered the car twice more – in June
1970 for the Nurnberg 200 mile race with
1969 Porsche 908/2 - #908/02-018 Kurze Flunder

von Wendt driving to 7th place and then

lastly in July at Hockenheim with Willi
Kauhsen again at the wheel, finishing 9th
overall.

Chassis #018 was then sold by von Wendt

to Guillermo Ortega and his Ecuador
Marlboro Racing Team. The car was later
entered in September 1972 for the 12-hour
Marlboro Race at Yaguacocha, Ecuador,
but Ortega crashed and damaged the car.
Wishing to run it at Le Mans, Ortega had
the damaged car sent back to the Porsche
factory for repairs. However, after
inspecting the damage the factory
estimated cost of repairs to be high and so
the Ecuador Marlboro Racing Team opted
to purchase another 908 for
approximately the same cost as the
estimated repairs and kept 908/02#018
for the time being for spare parts. Ortega
then acquired 908 #022 and entered Le
Mans with it in 1973 and 1974.

The accident-damaged chassis #018 was

later sold circa 1974 by Ortega to Kurt
Lotterschmid. Lotterschmid then in turn
sold it to Ing. August Deutsch of
Germany who sent it to be repaired by
Lehman-Tuning in Lenggries (ex-
McNamera Racing). An account of their
inspection and repair work in 1974 is
noted on file.
3 Deutsch then began to race the car
through 1975 and 76 as the ‘Deutsch-
Spezial’, known for its special bodywork
which was designed by Felix
Gmachmeier.
In 1977 Deutsch, sold the car to R & H
Racing in Canada. It was then entered
into numerous CanAm races from 1977 –
1979, still with its ‘special bodywork’
1969 Porsche 908/2 - #908/02-018 Kurze Flunder

including Watkins Glen 6 Hours, Mosport

and St Jovite, driven by Canadians Gary
Hirsch and/or Rainer Brezinka.

In 1980 H&R Racing sold the car to Bill

Bradley Racing. Bradley then removed
the Gmachmeier bodywork and had ex-
Porsche factory engineer Paddy O’Grady
fully restore it and replace it with original
908/2 short flunder bodywork. Bradley
then raced the car in 1982 at the
Nürburgring Oldtimer before selling it to
Mike Ostromouf and Richard Attwood.

Ostromouf and Attwood then raced the

car extensively together around the
world, mainly in the Supersports series
up until 1987.

In 1987 the car passed briefly to Frank

Gallogly, then in 1989 was sold to Bob
Jordan (USA) who entered the car in
various US based historic events whilst
having it maintained by Vintage Racing
Services.

In 2000 Jordon then sold the car to Joe

Mundy of Houston, Texas, USA. The
Mundy family then kept the car in their
collection for ten years with maintenance
bills on file carried out by Racecraft and
the engine noted as being last rebuilt by
Jerry Woods in California.
In 2010 the car was acquired by the
present owner and imported to the UK

We are delighted to offer for sale this

genuine ex-factory race car, which has a
long and continuous history in the hands
of the owners listed above. The car is
fitted with a Dale-Miller replacement 908
engine case, but comes with original 908
engine case no 908 03013-1. It is also fitted
with original 908 gearbox case no 034,
which is interestingly stamped with a
1974 ACO Le Mans scrutineers stamping.

A rare opportunity to acquire a highly

4 significant 1969 Porsche Prototype, with
continuous race history from new.
