USED TO
Se usa used to + verbo para hablar de habitos ya pasados y para hablar de estados pasados :
HÁBITO : I used to play the guitar = Significa que antes tocabas la guitarra pero ya no.
ESTADO : I used to live in London = Significa que antes vivías en Londres pero ya no.
Se usa la misma forma con todas las personas.
AFFIRMATIVE : I / you / he / she / it / we / they + used to + verbo
NEGATIVE : I / you / he / she / it / we / they + didn't use to + verbo
QUESTIONS : Did + I / you / he / she / it / we / they + use to + verbo?
PRESENT PERFECT
Se usa para hablar de acciones que empezaron o acaban de suceder en el pasado y aún continúan en
el presente. Equivale en castellano al pretérito perfecto. Se forma siguiendo este esquema :
Presente simple del verbo TO HAVE (have, has) + Participio del verbo principal
(I have bought a car = Yo he comprado un coche - I have lived in this city since 1980 = He vivi-
do en esta ciudad desde 1980)
La forma negativa se forma con la partícula de negación "not" entre el auxiliar y el verbo principal
(I have not done my homework = Yo no he hecho mis deberes) y la forma interrogativa se construye
con el auxiliar al comienzo de la oración, seguido del sujeto y del verbo principal (Have you been in
Seville? = ¿Has estado en Sevilla?)
EXPRESIONES QUE SUELEN ACOMPAÑAR AL PRESENT PERFECT
Just : Acabar de (We´ve just arrived = Acabamos de llegar)
Yet : aún, todavía, para la forma negativa (I haven´t finished it yet = No lo he acabado todavía)
Already : Ya, para la forma afirmativa (I have already finished it = Ya lo he acabado).
For : Desde hace (I have lived here for three years = Vivo aquí desde hace tres años).
Since : Desde (We haven´t heard from her since last year = No hemos tenido noticias suyas des-
de el año pasado)
Ever, never
EXPRESIONES QUE SUELEN ACOMPAÑAR AL PAST SIMPLE
Ago (cuánto tiempo hace) : (Phil had an accident two months ago = Phil tuvo un accidente hace
dos meses)
Yesterday, last week / month / year, etc : (I saw Rachel yesterday = Ayer vi a Raquel)
OJO
- cuando hablamos de una acción que se inició en el pasado y continúa en este momento, debemos uti-
lizar el present perfect
(Ricky has known Ann for eight months = Hace ocho meses que Ricky conoce a Ann)
- En preguntas que se refieren a un momento concreto del pasado se utiliza el past simple
(When did she leave? = ¿Cuándo salió? / Cuándo ha salido? –What did you say? = ¿Qué dijiste?
/ ¿Qué has dicho?)
WILL/WON’T (futuro)
AFIRMATIVA : sujeto + will (´ll) + infinitivo del verbo
(I’ll pone you tonight = te llamaré esta noche)
NEGATIVA : sujeto + won´t + infinitivo del verbo
(She won’t be at the party today. She’s ill = Hoy no irá a la fiesta. Está enferma)
INTERROGATIVA : Will + sujeto + infinitivo del verbo?
(Will she be at the party? = Irá a la fiesta?)
GOING TO (predicciones, planes e intenciones)
AFIRMATIVA : Sujeto + am / are / is + going to + infinitivo
(We’re going to see a film Saturday night = Vamos a ver una película el sábado noche)
NEGATIVA : sujeto + ‘m not / isn’t / aren’t
(She isn’t going to study at university next year = El año que viene no va a ir a la universidad)
INTERROGATIVA : Am / is / are + sujeto + going to + infinitivo
(Are you going to see your cousins at the weekend? = ¿Vas a ver tus primos el fin de semana?)
FIRST CONDITIONAL (se utiliza para las situaciones que son probables)
If + Suj + Present simple, Suj + will / won’t + Infinitivo
(If you pass your exams,we will go out and celebrate = Sí apruebas tu examen, saldremos a cele-
brarlo - If it´s too cold, we will won´t go to the lake = Sí hace demasiado frío, no iremos al lago)
SECOND CONDITIONAL (se utiliza para las situaciones que no van a pasar, que son improba-
bles)
If + Suj + Past simple, Suj + would / wouldn’t + Infinitivo
(If I won the lottery, I would buy a car = Sí ganara la lotería, me compraría un coche - If he played,
they wouldn´t win the match = Sí él jugara, no ganarían el partido)
SHOULD (se utiliza para dar consejos sobre lo que conviene hacer)
Suj + should / shouldn’t + infinitivo
(She should see a doctor = debería ir al médico - You shouldn´t wear this trousers = No debería
llevar ese pantalón)
Should + Suj + infinitivo? (What should I wear ? = Que debería llevar puesto?)
I think (creo) a menudo se usa en combinación con should
(I think we should go to the party = Creo que deberíamos ir a la fiesta)
RELATIVE CLAUSES
THAT : Que / cual (a veces se puede usar that en lugar de who o which) - WHO : Quien /
que (persona) - WHOSE : Cuyo - WHOM : A quien (Cuando va detrás de una preposición, sino se
usa who) - WHERE : Donde - WHEN : Cuando - WHICH : El cual
