1.0 Procedure Details

Steps Activities Responsible

1.1 Prepare the following apparatus: Chemist /
 Oven, capable of maintaining temperature at 110±5˚C; Laboratory
 Balance, readable and accurate to 0.01 g; Technician II
 Numbered aluminum weighing dish with close fitting numbered
lids; and
 Desiccator with desiccating agent

1.2 Heat clean dish to 110±5˚C for 1 h. Cool in desiccator to balance Chemist /
temperature and weigh, record as W C. Repeat cycle of drying, cooling, Laboratory
desiccating, and weighing until a constant weight is obtained. Store in Technician II
desiccator until needed.

1.3 Take a representative sample of the soil (at least 30 g), record as W 1, Chemist /
and place in a preweighed dish. Laboratory
Technician II
1.4 Dry for at least 1 h at 110±5˚C in an oven, cool in a desiccator to balance Chemist /
temperature, and weigh. Repeat the cycle of drying, cooling, Laboratory
desiccating, and weighing until a constant weight is obtained, W 2. Technician II

1.5 Calculate as follows: Chemist /

𝑊1 − 𝑊2 Laboratory
%𝑀𝑜𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 = 𝑥 100
𝑊2 − 𝑊𝐶 Technician II
Where:
W1 = weight of aluminum weighing dish and lid + wet soil
W2 = weight of aluminum weighing dish and lid + dry soil
WC = weight of aluminum weighing dish and lid
