Lantra, the Sector Skills Council for

for its annual awards to recognise

awards honour the best fencers
categories; a young land-based
learner aged between 16 and 26, a
lifelong learner aged 27, or someone
who has used Farming Connect’s
Skills Development funding to
develop their skills.

a high profile event at the Royal
Welsh Winter Fair on the 29th of

On Saturday 25th of October
McVeigh Parker embarked on
an adventure to remember. Ten
teams of two set off in a £100

ConFor host successful HEDGING AND
land-use liaison day FORESTRY UK SPONSER
ConFor recently hosted a visit
to privately owned commercial
woodland in Galloway, southwest
Scotland, for key RSPB and
Scottish Natural Heritage personnel,
to demonstrate the degree of
attention that goes into the design
of productive conifer woodland
to ensure quality landscape and
biodiversity ensues.
On-site discussions focused on how
improvements could be made to
processes to reduce conflicts between
forestry and environmentalists. It was
agreed that there should be scope to
re-examine requirements in the UK
Forestry Standard and UK Woodland
Assurance Standard (for certification)
so as to increase the proportion
of productive crops in new and
restructured woodland on sites with
little social or environmental interest.
Commenting after the day-long visit
to three different forests, ConFor
chief executive Stuart Goodall said:
“This was a most useful day for all
concerned – if we can make progress
following agreement around some

New Railhead introduced
to Brooks Range
Brooks (Forgings) Limited have
added a new railhead to their
extensive selection of railheads and

internal CAD/CAM facility with a resin
prototype produced for approval prior

A total of 2,000 railheads were formed

AN UPDATE ON ISSUES
SURROUNDING ELECTRIC GATES
Peter Mepsted of PHP Health and Safety reports on updates from the HSE regarding electrically operated gates.
I did not expect to write again on the
subject of automated gates in this
issue. However, the HSE have issued
a further safety advisory and believe
that all our readers should be aware
of the revised information.
The new safety alert follows on from last
February’s alert (see August edition) and
provides more detailed requirements
for manufacturers, installers, designers,
project coordinators, construction
and those with estate and premises
control. One highlight of the alert
relates to pointing out that limiting the
closing forces of gates alone will not
provide sufficient protection to meet
the relevant standards and installers
must fit additional safeguards to gates
in public areas.
David Ashton, the HSE Director of
Field Operations has said; “Electric or
automated gates are designed to stop if
someone gets in the way, and installers

and those maintaining these gates have
a real duty to ensure this happens. They
must take their responsibilities seriously
to make sure that anti-crushing, shearing
and trapping safety protection devices
are correctly set and maintained”.
He added; “When manufacturing,
designing or installing electric gates, it’s
crucial to consider who will be in the
area when it’s operating. If general public
can access the gate then additional
protections should be in place.”
Following my article last month,
I received several calls regarding
assessing the risk from automated
gates. What really concerned me was
the apparent lack of awareness of how
easy it is for members of the public
and, in particular, children to have
access to, and therefore potentially be
injured by, automated gates. Several
callers had only considered the actual
designated users and had completely
disregarded the general public! As I
stated in the last issue, all possibilities
must be considered.

urge all readers with any involvement
in automated gates to take the time to

The Door & Hardware Federation
(DHF) is playing a leading part in
the UK’s first major conference on
automatic powered gate safety.
The conference, to be held on
Wednesday October 27, is part
of a drive within the industry to
raise safety standards of powered
gates following two recent fatal
accidents.
At the gate safety conference,
initiated and organized by ASO
Safety Solutions and being held in
association with the Health and
Safety Executive, DHF general
manager and Secretary Michael
Skelding will be outlining the existing
and impending BS EN Standards
which govern powered gate safety.

conference because it is currently
producing a best practice guide for

JACKSONS FENCING
GO FOR KUPER
A new Kuper SWT23XL5 Planer/
Moulder has been installed at the
Ashford Kent works of H S Jackson
and Son (Fencing) Ltd by machinery
distributors Daltons Wadkin.
The machine which incorporated a
short infeed table to special order,
touch screen controls, centralised
lubrication, powerful (11 kW) motors
to each cutterhead was purchased
to add capacity to the company’s
production of timber fencing, gates,
decking and garden structures.
Jacksons operate three fencing
centres, one in Bath, Somerset, one
in Chester and their HQ at Ashford,
Kent, and produce both timber and
metal fencing products. The existing
machine at the Ashford site is run at
near capacity, increasing from 6,500
metres to 10,000 metres per day over
the past four years and now run on an
extended day shift.
The company already have two other
Planer/ Moulders but after recognising
the need for more production Jacksons
first approached Daltons Wadkin Sales
Director Andy Walsh in 2007. After
a number of discussions regarding
available options, Jacksons’ Operations
Director Andy Tune visited the Ligna
Exhibition to look at the Kuper range
and also took the opportunity of visiting
the Kuper factory in Germany. Andy
was impressed by the package provided
by Kuper, incorporating as it does the
economies of a main frame from South
East Asia coupled with the finesse

and build quality of Kuper in providing
electronics, operator functions and
engineering quality control.
Jacksons Fencing, currently in their
63rd year and still under family
control, commenced life as a farming
business subsequently recognising
the opportunity for supplying fencing
materials to other farmers in the area.
In recent years the company has
experienced increased demand for its
high quality products, boosted by the
environmental and economic benefits

Daltons Wadkin provided the new
moulder on a short lead time,
delivered it to Ashford, installed and
commissioned the machine and
provided operator training. Director

satisfying to bring the transaction
to a conclusion by supplying a well
proven quality Planer/Moulder to an
old established family business similar
to our own.”

SUFFOLK ESTATE GETS A FENCING FACELIFT

The 5,000 acre Somerleyton Estate
at Lowestoft, one of East Anglia’s
top stately homes, has installed
six thousand five hundred metres
of wrought iron parkland fencing
as part of a series of ongoing
grants under Defra’s higher level
stewardship scheme.

The fencing has been produced

and installed by a team from
Cotswold Decorative Ironworkers
from Stourton, Shipston on Stour,
Warwickshire. The firm has carried
out projects for the National Trust and
English Heritage in the past and the
work of its blacksmiths are displayed
on many public and private estates
throughout Britain.

Somerleyton Hall receives up to

25,000 visitors’ year and is widely
regarded as a leading example of an
archetypal Tudor-Jacobean mansion
and is one of the most beautiful
stately homes in Britain.
Since mid-19th century the estate has
remained in the hands of the Crossley
family, who live there and continue to
play an active role in the conservation
of the house and grounds. Its current
owner Hugh Crossley said, “CDI
were recommended to us by a
neighbouring estate in Norfolk and
have been very pleased with the
quality professionalism and price of
their work.”

Twenty-Eight Years
of Allan Froggatt Fencing
When Allan Froggatt first thought of
becoming a fencing contractor, little
did he know that 28 years down the
line, he would have founded one of
Derbyshire’s most well respected
agricultural fencing contractors,
formed around a team of five loyal
men, all of whom would join him
on his long and somewhat arduous
journey.
1982 was a big year for Allan. It was
the year that he broke out of his farming
comfort zone and took the daunting
plunge into the world of fencing.
“When I started the company it was
quite difficult in the early years simply
because I was on my own. Thankfully
however, after a couple of years I
employed one and then two men and it
progressed from there.”
And progress it did, but not into
a conveyor belt of come-and-go
employees, but into a team of five
men, two of which Allan nurtured from
a very young age: “Those men that
joined me at the very beginning are still
with me today. In total there’s Anthony
Ollerenshaw, Robert Nicholson,
Alistair Vickers, Michael Hitch and
Dan Critchlow. Of the five, I’ve known
Robert from my school days, whereas
Michael, Anthony, Alistair and Dan
have been with me since early in their
careers.”
Considering the financial times we are
in, it’s unusual to see a man who prides
himself and his company on long-
standing, dedicated staff members.
Allan tells us, “I think it’s important to
try and sustain the same colleagues for
as long as you can. At Allan Froggatt
Fencing we all work together, it’s not
boss versus men, we’re mates basically.

The conditions Allan speaks so casually
of are in many ways some of the most
trying a fencing contractor can face.
The majority of the company’s work is
done upon the picturesque Derbyshire
moors, which means that every now
and again materials need to be air
lifted onto site. This also means that
using machinery just isn’t feasible
and that good old fashion handwork
is often favoured. Allan explains, “All
we had in the early days was a crow
bar, a hammer and a spade and away
we went. It seems like a lifetime ago,
but as daft as it seems we’re doing
the same today because like I say the
majority of the work is handwork.”
After so many years in the industry
its inevitable that Allan has seen
patterns and trends of fencing come
and go, but he has remained focused

on what he and his team are good
at, that being agricultural, equestrian
and forestry fencing work: “Instead
of trying to accommodate all types
of work. I think it’s more important to
specialise in one type.”
One aspect of the industry that Allan
admits has been difficult throughout
recent years is the issue of timber
treatment: “If I’m honest we have
struggled with that, so what we now
aim to do is to offer our customers
an alternative. Firstly there’s your
standard pressure treated timber
available, or you can go for red wood
treated timber, which is slow grown
although this option does cost slightly
more. Alternatively there is the kiln
dried redwood option that carries the
25-year guarantee. We always suggest
the latter to our customers and nine
times out of ten they’ll opt for the more
expensive option.”
At 65 Allan is wonderfully enthusiastic
about the coming years and refuses to
bow out early. He insists, “I enjoy what
I do and I certainly hope to continue
working for several more years. At the
moment it’s nice to take a step back
into the more office-based role I’m in
now and I’m more than happy passing
the responsibility to the lads because
they know what they’re doing.”
In August at the NSA Sheep 2010
event Allan witnessed two of his
employees Anthony and Dan compete
at the Tornado Wire Competition.
He tells us, “I think competitions
like Fencing News’ and Tornado’s
are great as they make the crowds
aware of the unbelievable techniques
fencers use everyday.”
2010 has definitely been Dan and
Antony’s year. In July they were
awarded 2nd prize at our annual
fencing competition at the Driffield
Show, an excellent follow up from
his 2009 entry where he received
3rd prize. Who knows maybe next
year he’ll go one further and grab the
number one spot!
Over the past 12 months, there has
been one project in particular that
has kept Allan driven. Working in
conjunction with Beta Fence, Allan
has developed the fencing dispenser
ProFencer which in his own words is,
“designed to be kind to the wire and
save time and money when rolling
out and tensioning netting. Featuring
six different hydraulic functions the
ProFencer is capable of handling up to
500m rolls of netting.”
Exuding pride Allan says, “It works
and it works well. We exhibited it at
NSA and it generated a lot of interest
which was really encouraging. Our
main aim now is to get the price in the
right area, but it’s so nice to see it all
come together after hours and hours of
drawing and planning.”

CREOSOTE
CONTINUES
TO CLING ON!
Despite immense prejudice,
especially from a certain number of
our European ‘friends’, creosote for
application under hazard class 4 (in
ground contact) remains the firm
favourite when long life expectancy
is paramount.
Whilst the main applications for
creosote are utility poles and
railway sleepers, where long life is
an absolute must, there remains a
steady and improving demand from
the equestrian and livestock fencing
sector. Demand for creosoted
fencing has been steady throughout
the year, with no real seasonal peaks
and troughs.
It is with some relief, therefore that the
original proposed application to allow
creosote to be included under annex
1 of the Biocidal Products Directive
(BPD) has been substantially re-
written following significant lobbying
by the majority of the EEC countries,
not least the UK!
Without getting too technical, our
European Commission was all
but ready to pull the plug on all
future applications where pressure
creosoted timber was going into the
ground – fence posts, stakes, utility
poles etc. Railway sleepers were

excluded as they merely sit on top
of the ground!!
However, as there is really no
known tried and tested alternative
to good old creosote for long life
applications, the Commission
appears to have relented. The
official line is now where no viable
alternative is on offer, and then it is
up to each individual member state
to argue as such. We wait to see
what transpires. There is no doubt,
however, that our electricity bills
will increase dramatically if timber
poles can no longer be used to
transmit power.
On the timber supply front, it is
pleasing to note that prices generally
have stabilised, and in some cases
even come down slightly. This may not
be sustained, however, as our pound
comes under further pressure.
All this of course is good for exports
and we are fortunate to have very
strong export markets, particularly
in Holland, France and Germany,
all of whom are benefitting from the
mini sterling slide!

FENCING NEWS TALKS WITH JOHN SHELDON OF FENCETREE
Fencetree’s beginning was not as
the name suggests, but evolved
from John Sheldon’s father who
ran a small holding in the hamlet
of Stanwardine, which is between
Shrewsbury and Oswestry. As with
many small holdings, the evolution
of farming meant that big was better,
which lead to a move from stock
rearing to agricultural contracting as
far back as the 70’s.

From contracting the business moved

into agricultural clothing but at the
same time contact with local farmers
was always maintained.

In the 90’s, John was involved in the

engineering and construction industry
but as the agricultural business grew
close to hand and as a result the the fencing side of the business and
he joined his father to expand and
business has never looked back. As have also brought in other work

site work.

Recession costs 324

Fencing companies a
third of their value
324 companies in the UK Fencing
industry are worth a third less than
they were a year ago in the clearest
indication yet of the damage the
recession has wreaked on the market.
However, in a sign that the recovery
is gaining traction, 265 companies in
the market have actually increased
in value.
David Pattison, author of a special
report valuing the top 748 companies
in the market describes how values
are changing in the market, “It’s
certainly been a tough few years.
Values have fallen markedly from their
peak but the number of companies
that are worth more this year than last
is encouraging.”
“In all we identified 265 companies
that have increased in value, which
is quite an achievement considering
current market conditions. Their
performance adds to the growing
belief that the market has stabilised
and companies with their house in
order can once again prosper and add
value.”
However, as with all recoveries there
are those that struggle to recover
as Pattison points out, “324 other
companies have lost a third of their
value in the latest year. They have
such a lot of ground to make up
and many are in such dire straits it’s
unlikely they will return to their former
glory. The post recession market is
so highly competitive I would expect
a number of these companies to be
bought out on the cheap or decline
further and eventually be wound up.”

New names on
TTJ Awards roll
of honour
James Latham plc has taken its fifth
Timber Trader of the Year title in the
14-year history of the TTJ Awards,
but this year’s competition also
produced some first-time winners.
Latham’s previously won the Weinig-
sponsored top prize, which goes to the
company scoring most votes overall,
in 2000, 2002, 2004 and, the last
time in 2008. The company’s latest
trophy was accepted by executive
director Chris Sutton from Awards
host and guest speaker Karren
Brady at the ceremony in London, in
September.
One of the first-time winners was
Brooks Bros (UK), which took the
Hardwood Trader of the Year Award,
sponsored by Progressive Solutions.
RKL Plywood and Morgan Timber
also made their TTJ Awards winner’s
debut, named respectively Plywood
Trader of the Year, sponsored by
W.Howard, and Small Timber
Business of the Year, sponsored by
Proskills.
RKL Plywood was also joint winner
with Montague L Meyer (Barking) of
the Coillte Panels Products-sponsored
Panels Trader of the Year Award. The
Softwood Trader of the Year Award,
sponsored by Arch Timber Protection,
went to Arbor Forest Products Ltd,
New Holland.
According to TTJ Editor Mike Jeffree,
all the Awards categories were

The Achievement in Sustainability

to The Forest Trust and Premier
Forest Products for bringing the
first 100% legally-verified Chinese

HE’S IN IT TO WIN IT!

Gary Batley isn’t your average fencer,
he’s a man whose attitude towards
the trade is incredibly forthright and
whose efforts were championed
recently at this years Tornado’s
National Fencing Competition.
When asked about the win Gary
was keen to tell us just how they
managed it.
“Me and Jeff Turner paired up
for the competition. Anyone who
knows Jeff will know that he is one
of the old school fencing legends.
We competed two years ago and
although we got good points, we only
finished in just under the three hours
given. We finished first this time and
with better results; overall I think the
judges were impressed.”

relationship is a longstanding one,
Gary explains; “We’ve worked a
lot together in the past especially
for Natural England and different
environmental schemes where all
types of fencing was needed in
difficult, inaccessible areas; Jeff
would have us working on cliff tops
and across rivers carrying timber on
our backs!”

all about quality jobs isn’t it? I’ve gone
to jobs where after I’ve given a price

From merse to mountain
- Craig Smith tackles them all!
Son of a local beef and sheep farmer,
Craig Smith gained experience
working as a fencer before setting up
his own business 12 years ago, and
now he is looking to increase his staff
to cope with the demand for fencing
work in the area.
Based at Craiginnes, Clarebrand, just
outside Castle Douglas, Craig and his
wife Julie, who is also a partner in the
business, employ three men and are
looking to sign up a fourth so that they
can have two teams of fencers to cope
with the workload.
The business began operating from
the greenfield site at Clarebrand five
years ago where the Smiths live on
site and there is ample storage space
for fencing materials and secure
covered storage for machinery.
Working within a 50 mile radius of
Castle Douglas with the majority of
the work being agricultural, at busy
times it is not unusual for Craig’s
fencers to erect up to 3,000 metres
of fencing in a week!

“Twelve years ago I started working
on my own and within 12 months
I employed a man to help with the
work. Now I want to have two teams
working to keep up with the demand
for fencing,” said Craig. “I have two

weeks ago he approached Bryce for
a second Profi Supreme, but one that
this time featured a rock spike and a
quad shift. That particular model is on
its way to Craig Smith as this issue of
Fencing News goes to print.
While Julie juggles being a mum to
their daughters Amy, Emily and Megan,
with bookkeeping and administrative
work for the business, Craig is very
much hands-on with the fencing
work. The large yard at Craiginnes is
stocked with most materials required
for fencing which enables Craig to buy
posts and wire at competitive prices
which helps him price jobs favourably
for his customers. He also believes
strongly in sourcing his materials as
locally as possible and all the timbers
are from the UK and generally from
local sawmills.
One of the more unusual jobs is
maintaining the fencing at the RSPB’s
reserves at Merse Head, Southwick,
and Kirkconnell Merse, on the River
Nith near Dumfries. The area is tidal
and difficult to access, so much so
that Craig has considered getting to
the work by boat!
The wonderful
treehouse
“Craig did a huge job for us last year
on the salt merse near Dumfries which
few people would tackle, in fact, we
had to use our tracked machine to pull
him out of the creeks on occasion,”
said Eric Neilson, who undertakes the
land management for the RSPB.
Cattle graze the merse areas and extra
long poles have to be used for electric
fencing, netting would not survive the
trees washed up by the tide. Among
the more unusual jobs tackled by
Craig Smith Fencing was the erection
of two 25ft piers in the middle of a
pond for a customer. Several corrals
have been built for farmers in the area
to outwinter cattle. A small proportion
of the work is garden fencing and Craig
has also turned his hand at building
a tree house for his daughters. Aside
from the fencing work, Craig also
offers a bale wrapping service using
a Massey Ferguson tractor, handling
around 14,000 bales a year from July
to September for local farmers.

SOUTH WEST PROJECTS TURN TO
SMARTPLY AND SITEPROTECT
FSC certified SmartPly OSB
and its coated hoarding and

projects in the South West. New
shopping ‘destination’ SouthGate
Bath is nearing completion, and
construction recently began on
a brand new school for pupils of
Hartridge High School in Newport.
Bath’s £360m Southgate is a
modern shopping destination, with
classic Georgian-style open streets
and public spaces. Throughout the
construction of SouthGate Bath,
18mm SmartPly OSB3 was used to
securely board all the new stores.
Most of the units are now let, but

is still visible on the last few stores,

Construction of the new £29m state-
of-the-art building for Hartridge High
School in Newport, started in May
2010, as part of the Council’s major
secondary school redevelopment
programme. With its innovative
design, which includes two teaching
wings wrapped around a central
atrium, the new school is intended to
offer the best possible environment
for Hartridge’s 1,450 pupils, raising
education standards as well as
offering first-class community
facilities and providing employment
opportunities. The work is expected
to be completed by spring 2012.
The new scheme will replace the
current school, which is housed in
three 1960’s buildings. The main
construction site has been fenced
off from the existing school with
over 500m of SmartPly SiteProtect
creating the impressive perimeter
fence, with peep-holes left to view
the ongoing works.

Cutting It in Kent
Chris Berry talks with Kevin Wilson of Fairseat Fencing
Tucked away in the heart of Kent is
a family business that started out 21
years ago when Bert Wilson, who was
a crane driver at the BP oil refinery
on the Isle of Grain, began a firewood
enterprise.

Today it is his son Kevin who is at the

helm, with his dad still involved too.
The firewood side of the business now
makes up around 20-25% of their
turnover with roughly 350 tonnes
produced every year, but it is the
manufacture of chestnut fencing of the
traditional cleft post and rail variety,
plus post lengths, paling, stakes,
diamond trellis and bespoke garden
furniture that forms the lion’s share.

that he had done previously. We’re
primarily a trade supplier and supply
quite a number of customers. Luckily
enough we are situated opposite 250
acres of sweet chestnut coppice which
is privately owned. Tilhill Forestry
manage the woodland and they handle
the felling licences.’
There is a concentration on sweet
chestnut, but Kevin also talks of the
felling of cherry.
‘We felled a reasonable amount of
cherry recently down in Meopham (5
miles from where Fairseat is situated).
Some of that went for timber whilst
the rest went for firewood. We fell
sweet chestnut and cherry for quite a
few privately-owned woodlands where
we get our own licences.’
Kevin came into the business in 1990
from an engineering background. He
worked as a time-served fitter and
turner at a paper mill in Aylesford.
‘The company was either going to
close or move to a new site so I went
fork-lifting for a year before coming
into the business which dad had set
up. I’m the only cutter so I’m pretty
much on that all of the time, as well as
the forwarding-out, although we use a
haulier for further afield.’
The most recent purchase at Fairseat
is a new timber processor/harvester.
Kevin explains how the purchase
came about.
‘We have a customer who we cut
for who wants 1500 tonnes a year
of woodchip material and in order to
fulfil that, as well as meeting our own
fencing needs we approached SEEDA
with a business plan and we were
fortunate enough to receive a grant.
It is a Timberjack 870A which has a
746 harvesting head on the end. The
idea is to speed the whole process up.
I’m just trying to get to grips with it at
the moment.’

In common with many in the industry
Kevin is not greatly enamoured with
the use of softwoods for fence posts
and he believes that this is what has
seen the resurgence of chestnut.
‘Softwoods have a poor reputation.
Everyone tells me they’ve now changed
the treatment but our customers still
tell us that fence posts made from
softwood are not lasting. Even Duchy
Home Farm, HRH Prince of Wales’
farm has come away from softwood
because they don’t like the treatment
in the ground. Chestnut seems to be
really coming back.’
The Fairseat team includes Kevin,
Bert, Kevin’s wife Janet, who joined
the company 3 years ago, plus Ray
Wildish, who works part-time and
Bobby George (not the darts player!),
who is full-time. Kevin’s mum Marion
was involved previously.

‘We are looking for good people all
the time because we are increasing
the amount of work we do, but those
who come seem to think the work is
too much like hard work after a few
months. We’re still looking to find the

Kevin and Janet have a son Dominic
(15) and daughter Hannah (10). Kevin
tells us that Dominic gets threatened

doesn’t do well at school his dad has

UKFPA’S ‘CAUTIOUS
WELCOME’ FOR
WOODLAND INITIATIVE
The latest initiative from Forestry
Commission Scotland to encourage
increased productive planting by
landowners has received a cautious
and qualified welcome from the
UK Forest Products Association
(UKFPA). The scheme will offer
landowners the opportunity to
lease land to FC Scotland, who
would establish a productive crop
and maintain it for a period of 10
years, after which the land and
the crop would be returned to the
landowner.
The minimum land area to be
considered for this scheme is 30
hectares per application. On receipt of
applications, FC Scotland will assess
the suitability of the land and where
appropriate, agree a rental for the
term of the lease. The initiative forms
part of the Scottish Government’s
ambitious plans to increase tree cover
in Scotland, which will require planting
of some 10,000 hectares every year.

A new kiln for Bouchier Fencing Ltd

Victoria Poolman travels to Berkshire to see the
latest development at Bouchier Fencing
If you’re going to do something, do
it properly should be tattooed on
Roger Akers’ forehead, because it’s
certainly the ethos upon which he
has built his business. Since starting
up back in 1970 under his middle
name, Bouchier, Roger’s range of
services has shifted significantly, but
his morals have remained the same.
He tells me:

“There are a lot of people in the industry

who aren’t interested in producing
quality materials with durability in

guidelines. Roger tells me:

“When I started out as a contractor,

we used spruce treated with CCA for
almost everything. Over the years
and especially now, with the change
in chemicals, we’ve realised the
importance of using the right wood for
the job, treating timber which has been
dried to the correct moisture level, and
using the right quantities and quality of
treatment chemicals.

“We have run our own tests to find what
we believe is the best preservative,
which we obtain from Wolman, and
we’re thorough with each stage of the
process, tagging all our finished posts
for customer assurance. We also treat
our timber on a timed cycle to ensure it
absorbs as much chemical as possible,
not on a predetermined basis giving
only the minimum required.”
Indeed, the proof that the company is
taking this very seriously is on a screen
in the office, where bars, levels and
graphs record the exact moisture levels
of the timber inside the kiln, monitored
by four sets of detectors inside the
building. In addition, a number of
leaflets, posters and samples are
available to educate their clients to the
importance of doing it properly.
“We can provide whatever the
contractor needs and supply everything
to the highest standards”, Roger says.
“Our friendly approach and dedication
to customer service really does set
us apart from our competitors – and
having been contractors ourselves, we
understand our customers’ needs and
can offer help and job-specific advice,
as well as sourcing the exact materials
they require.”
Although Bouchier Fencing has been
hit - as any other company - by the
recent economic troubles, they have
held on to their regular customers,
which is testimony to their efforts.
“From the early days, we have gone
from supplying a small number of
large clients to a large number of small
clients. The latter is harder work, but
it brings added security and we’ve got
the transport to cope with it”, says
Roger.
The recent £200,000 development
has undoubtedly required a good deal
of research and work, with the team all
being very hands-on with each stage of
the project. But with the build due for
completion by the time you read this
article, vast amounts of quality timber
will be in the process of being kilned,
manufactured into gates, posts, fences
and more, then treated to what Roger
perceives to be the highest standard
possible. The result already lies in piles
around me in posts and fences which
definitely give the impression of having
absorbed the preservative which
assures they’ll still be standing firm for
many years to come.
That doesn’t only make Roger and his
workforce happy, you can guarantee
it gives their contracting clientele
the edge they need to succeed in an
industry where ‘doing it properly’ is
becoming more of a priority.

The UK Decking
Market ,
2010 first half
Historically, election years tend to
have a negative impact on business
activity. When the election year
coincides with an economy struggling
to emerge from recession the results
can be very challenging. According
to the Timber Decking & Cladding
Association (TDCA), trading in the
decking market in 2010 is reflecting
these difficult conditions but the
signs of the resilience in 2008
and 2009 that earned decking the
reputation of being recession-proof,
although a little diminished are still
having a positive effect.
TDCA Director Steve Young says,
“According to reports from our
members, the value of sales is up by
about 5%, due to raw material price
increases, but volume in the quality
redwood sector has fallen back to
2008 levels.”
Naturally durable hardwood
decking remains the preference
for commercial, public sector and
high value domestic professional
deck installations. Hardwood has
been the material of choice for
public access decks and as the low
environmental impact credentials
and other benefits of wood continue
to increase its popularity for outdoor
landscaping overall, the TDCA says
it is too soon to predict what impact
timber update
impending public sector cutbacks
will have. Right now, the projects
that are in the pipeline should mean
that hardwood decking will remain
at around 15% of the total market.
In recent years, modified wood
decking has emerged and the TDCA
believes the prospects for these new
materials are good. Established
members like Finnforest, Howarth
Timber, Osmose and Arch have
introduced, or are in the process of
introducing modified wood decking
based on technologies such as heat
treatment and resinification to add
durability. In April, Titan Wood joined
the TDCA as part of its strategic
development of its acetylated wood
technology.
Whilst most TDCA members
acknowledge that trading condition
are more challenging in 2010, they
also recognise that the market is more
segmented with different grades and
species. “Ensuring quality standards
do not fall is key to the long term
future of timber decking and the
reputation of wood as an outdoor
material,” says Steve who confirms
that TDCA strategy continues to
focus on promoting quality materials
and good installation practice.

must ensure that Scotland’s forest
resource is not squandered in the
rush for renewable energy. There is
a risk that huge volumes of wood,
which would be better used for
product manufacture, being burnt
in large-scale electricity generating
plants, thereby losing the valuable
opportunity of locking up carbon in
wood products for long periods. It is
for this reason that we will continue
to press for further development of
renewable energy from waste. We
believe that everyone can benefit
from development of this grossly
under-utilised energy resource.”

GATE SAFETY SUMMIT CALLS FOR CAMPAIGN

like to dip their feet in unfamiliar

“Although agricultural fencing and
post-and-rail is what we do most
often, we occasionally carry out park
railing and gate work, which regularly
involves designing and manufacturing
bespoke products. This job took a
week to erect and was completed a
fortnight ago, we manufactured the
entire thing and sent all the materials
to be galvanised beforehand to
guarantee the best quality.”
In early August, Keith and his brother
Richard, didn’t ‘dip’, but dived into
unknown territory and decided to
compete in Tornado’s Force 12
Fencing Competition at the NSA
Sheep event.
Speaking about the contest Keith
tells us: “It was a good day and was
organised really professionally. The
competition itself was hard work
because the ground was so dry and
difficult, but apart from that it went
really well. The one big snag was that
we hit an old strainer post that had
been buried, which meant we had to

manually dig it out, costing us about
twenty minutes in total.”
On the day of the competition,
the judges marked each fence in
three categories; the underground
work (how the post is set into the
foundations), the quality of wire and
how well it is attached, and finally
the overall look of the fence. In the
end, Wells Fencing was awarded a
well deserved tenth place, not a bad
attempt considering the unfortunate
obstacle that was thrown at them.
“We did OK, I think we were last
at one stage because of the extra
digging and everything, but we
managed to claw it back two or three
places so we were fairly pleased with
that. Even though we’ve done really
well in YFC fencing competitions in
the past, this contest was a bit more
of a challenge.”
Wells Fencing was established in
2002 after Keith spent some time

board and has brought a new
dimension to the company.
“If I’m honest I think that taking
Richard on has been my biggest
investment to date. Richard works as
an environmental consultant, so he
comes in really handy when it comes

“When I first started out, agriculture
was going through a bad patch and
there was a lot of work where farmers
wanted us to simply come and put
together fencing materials that they
had already purchased. That was
during the aftermath of foot and
mouth, but now farmers are prepared
to dig a little deeper and contract us
to supply and erect. Next year we are
going to have a think about which
type of fencing is the real mainstay
of the business and perhaps try to
specialise a little more.”

Bright future for Securafen
There is a saying that if you can do
well during a recession then your
business will fly when times start
getting better, but setting up a
business at that time can be even
trickier.
Securafen, based in Grantham, did
just that a little over a year ago. They
found life tough at first but, with
over 50 years of experience between
the three men involved, they have
weathered the early months of their
company’s life and are confidently
heading towards a bright future.
‘I wish I had done this 10 years ago,’
says Richard Atter who runs the
company with sons David and Daniel.
‘We would have been a lot further on
and we wouldn’t have struggled the
way we did at first. We put up our own
money, I remortgaged and we have
changed banks. Now that we have a
good credit rating they’re prepared to
help us.’
Richard has worked in the fencing
industry for the past 32 years and
has been with some major companies
during that time including Darfen and

the contract for railway fencing across
three of the UK’s main lines.
Securafen’s main role is to provide
perimeter security fencing, automated
gates, high security fencing, and
electric and timber fencing and
during the past 12 months they have
completed all manner of contracts.
‘We had a job in Devon for Arada UK
who supply coal and electric fires and
boilers and we have just completed
another for Kettering Town FC. We will
go nearly anywhere, although we have
turned down a job we were offered in
Afghanistan! We are starting to pick
up some bigger jobs and we are in the
early stages of a really large one in
Wales that is worth a substantial sum
and will last over a year.’
Whilst Richard’s preference is for
Securafen to supply and install, they
will also provide purely a supply side if
that is what the customer wants.
‘Supply and install is our main thing,
that way we can project manage the
job properly from start to completion
ensuring that everything is handled
professionally.’
Currently Securafen operates with two
teams, including David and Daniel
with one other man who is close to
being permanently employed and
another who is on casual labour at
present.

Chestnut makes its comeback
Chris Berry talks with Nathan Battershill of NB Fencing
Nathan Battershill has seen life from
both sides of the fence, literally! He
has been putting them up for long
enough and he has been dealing
with the livestock that are enclosed
within.
‘I’ve always been interested in farming
and I like working with sheep. I worked
on farms in Kent for about 5 years
contract shepherding. I still do a bit
of shearing in the summer to keep my
hand in and it pays quite well. Fencing
has always been in my mum’s side of
the family. My granddad started off
with it. He made chestnut fencing.’
Nathan’s uncle and cousins have all
been in the fencing business and it
seemed just a matter of time before
Nathan followed suit, starting his
business as NB Fencing Services.

‘I put up mainly agricultural fencing,
but I put up domestic and security
fencing also. I travel wherever the
work takes me although I try to stay
in the South east mainly. I put up a
mixture of post and rail and post and
wire, it’s about a 50/50 split. I’ve just
completed quite a sizeable job for a
big livery yard where a gas pipeline
was going across their field. We put
up 3000 metres of creosote fencing
and I was very pleased with the final
result. Other jobs have since spun off
from that.’

Competitors take fencing contest

The 14th Tornado Wire National
Fencing Competition, held at NSA
2010, has come to an end after a
closely fought battle between some
of the country’s finest fencers. Gary
Batley Fencing Contractor made it
second time lucky for competing in
the contest, beating 12 other teams
to pick up the Tornado Wire winners’
trophy and £1,000 cash prize.
A W R Taylor Fencing came in
2nd for the fifth time, narrowly
beating seasoned competitors Garth
Bradbury Fencing Ltd into 3rd place
by one point.

MD, Kenny Campbell, comments:
“In almost 30 years of holding the
competition, we’ve rarely seen such
hard ground conditions. Without the
aid of modern equipment, the teams
had to rely on their years of expertise
and sheer strength to overcome the
difficult environment. That just over
half finished within the allocated
time just goes to show how tough the
Tornado challenge is – all three prize
winners should be extremely proud of
their achievements.”
Previous winner Mike Ford shared
judging duties with Mr Campbell,
awarding points according to strict
underground and fence line criteria,
with additional points for speed. Held
at the Three Counties Showground in
Malvern, Worcestershire, the biennial
event has become one of the leading
showcase in the fencing calendar for
demonstrating skill and expertise in
the industry.

The Highland Wildlife Park, owned and run by the Royal Zoological
Society of Scotland was planning a visit from their patron HRH the
Princess Royal to open the new wolf enclosure. In addition to work

ATTENDANCE
APF 2010, the UK’s largest forestry,
woodland and arboriculture show
held recently at Cannock Chase,
Staffordshire on the 23-25th
September welcomed a record
number of visitors during the 3 days
of the show. 16,700 visitors came
through the gates and increase of
700 on the 2008 exhibition.
Ian Millward, the Exhibition Secretary
said “We are absolutely delighted at

the record turnout at a time when
many shows have seen a substantial
drop in visitor numbers. Our exhibitor
numbers were the same as in 2008.
We are pleased that the hard work
of all our team has been reflected in
these figures”.

the plant enthusiasts at the event,
Andrew Wilson went on to show
his remarkable designs of the Savill
Garden opened by HRH Elizabeth II
to much acclaim.

on stage by Paul Bramhill of
Greenspace who argued eloquently
for more investment in time, creativity
and money for public spaces.
Sarah Price, one of the team of
designers working on the 2012
Olympic Gardens at Stratford gave
a sneak preview of the planting for
the event and spoke of working in a
team. Matthew Wilson, Channel 4’s
Landscape Man, rounded off the
event with an energetic discussion
on dynamic planting.

Magnetic gate latches mean no mechanical
resistance to closure
When Australian inventor and
fencing contractor David Doyle first
thought of devising “a better gate
latch” he couldn’t help but think of
magnetism being the answer to his
problem.
He noticed that most gate latches
failed to work consistently because
of either mechanical resistance
(i.e. friction between metal parts)
or because the gate sagged. He
realised he couldn’t counter gate
sag because that rested with either
the sturdiness of the hinges or the
strength of the gate frame. But he
could make a big difference if he
could avoid metal components
clashing.
He had tinkered with regular ferrite
magnets (the ones we all played with
as kids) but realised that because
such magnets lose their magnetic
power over time they could not be
used for a reliable gate latch.
Soon after, in the late 1980s, he
saw a television science program
featuring “rare earth magnets”. He
learned that not only were these

– a high power-to-weight ratio – but
also that they never lose their power!

Within a year Doyle had made his

PLANT THEFT REMAINS A REAL PROBLEM

TRACKER recovers on average two items of stolen plant
and agriculture machinery every week
As John Craven and the BBC Country
File team continue to report on the
recent rise in rural crime, stolen
plant and agriculture machinery
recovery experts TRACKER reveals
that it recovered over 3.5 million
pounds worth of stolen plant and
farming equipment between June
2009 and July 2010.
Supporting efforts to raise awareness
of the issue, TRACKER confirms
that the highest value item of stolen
plant recovered by TRACKER was a
Caterpillar Excavator worth £74,000,
followed by a John-Derre 7930
Tractor worth £70,000. However,
farmers and plant owners with
smaller value items shouldn’t count
themselves safe from thieves, warns
TRACKER, as it frequently recovers
trailers, compressors and loadalls
worth just £1,000.
“Our figures show that plant
machinery worth £10,000 or less
accounted for 48 per cent of the total
items we recovered, highlighting that
thieves don’t just target expensive
tractors,” says Stuart Chapman,
police liaison officer for TRACKER.
“Plant machinery worth £50,000 or
more accounted for just 6 per cent of
the total items recovered.”
JCB and Kubota are the makes of
plant machinery stolen the most and
then recovered by TRACKER, however
no make is safe from thieves. When
it comes to the regional picture,
Kent and Manchester are the UK’s
hot spots for stolen plant recovery,
followed by Essex and Surrey.

at this years Saltex exhibition. An
alternative to falling weight post

The little machine with a big impact

It’s all well and good having a hundred
acres to play with, but if you aren’t
Victoria Poolman travels north of London to meet

going to reap much of a reward. For
Laura Lloyd and her operations manager Billy
Laura Lloyd, a fantastic little machine
from Kanga has revolutionised the
way she runs her estate.

“We have been focused on the farm

for many years, but Billy began to
notice that the woodland needed
thinning out. We had two options,
to hire in some contractors to come
and deal with it – a costly route – or
to invest in the machinery to do it
ourselves.”

Having returned from the APF show

with his heart set on a Kanga ‘Kid’,
Billy persuaded Laura into buying the
piece of kit. She says:
“We were so impressed with the
machine. It enabled us to deal with
the wood quickly and with minimum
effort. However we soon required
something with more horsepower,
so we part exchanged the Kid and
upgraded to a new series 7 machine
with a few different heads.”
Billy has since been extracting the
wood – 80 cubic meters in their
first year – and are now supplying
Forestry Commission approved
quality seasoned hardwood logs and
kindling to our local area.
Keeping busy with his Kanga, Billy
has also been doing clearance work,
trenching for water piping and electric
cables, lake fencing and rotovation in
the Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire
and Essex areas. He tells me:
“There have been a lot of problems
with otters killing the carp in local has made it possible to offer our

ARCH CONQUERS THE 3 PEAKS!

A team of 20 intrepid walkers from
Arch Timber Protection recently took
on Yorkshire’s 3 Peaks challenge
to raise money for various charities
close to their hearts.
Setting out in murky, grey conditions

GRIPPLE AND LOADHOG BRAVE THE THREE PEAKS CHALLENGE

A 15-strong group from Sheffield-
based Gripple and Loadhog
conquered the three highest
mountains in the UK in less than 24
hours raising at least £1,500 for a
most worthy charity!
Facing the formidable Three Peaks
Challenge was part of Gripple’s funding
raising effort in aid of Doncaster’s
Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice.
In the evening, the group powered up
Ben Nevis, strode up Scafell Pike the
next morning, and then crawled up
Mount Snowdon at lunchtime. At the
top of Mount Snowdon they celebrated
their mammoth achievement before
heading down to finish within the 24
hour limit.
During the challenge, the group
notched up 28 miles, burned 9,800
calories and was driven 500 miles.
A member of the group, Giles Moore,
Gripple’s UK, Ireland and Pacific sales
manager, said: “This was a daunting
challenge, not for the faint hearted.
Taking on the challenge meant
serious training and determination.
Continuous walking at a fast pace was
needed, testing mental and physical
strength to the limit. It, however, was
a fantastic achievement in support of
such a worthwhile charity.”
