A short note on Magna Carta, Only for Anu

Magna Carta, meaning ‘The Great Charter’, is one of the most famous documents in the world.
Originally issued by King John of England as a practical solution to the political crisis he faced in 1215,
Magna Carta established for the first time the principle that everybody, including the king, was subject
to the law. Magna Carta contains 63 clauses written in Latin on parchment. Only three of the original
clauses in Magna Carta are still law today. One defends the freedom and rights of the English Church,
another confirms the liberties and customs of the City of London and other towns. Third one deals with
right to justice and fair a trial. The Magna Carta is considered one of the first steps taken in England
towards establishing parliamentary democracy. Even more recently, the basic principles of the Magna
Carta are seen very clearly in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, penned in 1948 just after the
Second World War.
