PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Congratulations to Patrick
Lowrey. As part of the UCI
Bicycle Competition our students
in grade 5/6 created posters to
welcome a designated team of
bicycle riders. The country our
school welcomed was Germany as
this is the language that the
children learn at school as part of
our Language Other than English
Program. The students designed
posters and entered these posters
in a competition that the Geelong
Advertiser had organised. Patrick
Lowrey, in grade 5, was the
outright winner of the Geelong
Advertiser Competition. His
poster was displayed in Pakington
Street. His prize was an
autographed riding jersey with
signatures from the whole
Australian Team including Cadel
Evans, and Stuart O’Grady and
the French Time Trial team.
Thank you to Kathy Hyland, our
creative and talented Art teacher,
who has provided for the students
many opportunities so that they
have experiences and are able to
develop their skills to such a high
level. Our school will have an
excellent display of students Art
work at the Education Pavilion
during the Geelong Show. If you
attend the Show make sure that
you view the work our students
have created.
Term 4 is a busy term. It is a
wonderful learning term as the
systems for learning have been set
up and the teachers know the

students so well. The weather is
fining up and there is a general
positive feeling throughout the
school. Daily attendance though
is really vital for all students
during this term to extend and
maintain the students learning.
Commencing school on time is
vital. Learning commences at 9 o
‘ clock when literacy learning
begins. Students who are
constantly late miss out on this
important commencement to their
literacy learning.

Walktober is here!
Next Tuesday 19th October the
whole of Ashby, yes that means
you, are being asked to come to
school by active means - walking,
scooting or bike riding.
Children, talk to your parents,
and parents talk to your children.
Get organized - drive to a park /
oval or park safely several blocks
from school and walk the
remaining distance to school.
Make up your own groups and
walk with friends.
I will be at Bakers Oval car park -
Shannon Avenue side, and will
leave at 8.30 a.m. to walk our
usual route along Waratah,
Elizabeth, Catherine Streets and
Lawton Avenue to school. So
come and join me. Children who
plan to ride will need to be
independent and go ahead of
those who are walking.
At the Waratah and Lawton gates,
the Active Travel Committee will
have small give-aways for all who
have made the effort to come by
active means.
Ashby will be eligible to win
several sporting prizes if we put
the effort in.
So let’s “do” Walktober.

ART ROOM
Congratulations Patrick on
winning the UCI Poster
Competition.
Patrick was presented with a UCI
bike riding top signed by the
Australian team, at assembly on
Friday. His winning poster was
displayed in Pakington Street
during the UCI bike race. The
Geelong Advertiser came and took
some photos of Patrick receiving
his prize, so keep an eye on the
paper.
The children's art work has been
put on display at the Geelong
Show in the Education Pavillion.

Help Ashby Collect Sports Gear for Our School from Coles!
We have registered for the Coles Sports for Schools program where Coles is giving all primary and secondary schools in
Australia the chance to get brand new sporting equipment – and we need your help! Every $10 spent at Coles
Supermarkets, Coles Online, Bi-Lo or Pick‘n Pay between Thursday 2 September and Sunday 31 October 2010, will
earn a Coles Sports for Schools voucher worth 1 point. When making your purchase, simply ask your cashier for the
Coles Sports for Schools vouchers. We’re asking our local school community to collect these vouchers from family,
friends and neighbours. Vouchers can be returned to your child’s teacher or the school office. The more vouchers we
collect, the more sports gear we can get! Just remember to ask for the vouchers when you pay for your purchase. If you

Save the Date - Annual Ashby Art Show, Friday, November 5th!
The Annual Ashby Art Show will be held Friday, November 5th. The event offers a chance to see art created by the
students throughout the year, as well as an opportunity to raise additional funds for the schools art program. This year's
art show will again feature canvases created by each class which will be auctioned off, notecard sets featuring art
created by the students for sale (a great Christmas present for relatives) and an opportunity to contribute to the art work
featured on the school's grounds. Stay tuned for more information!

Can You Help?

There are many ways you can get involved at Ashby. Below are some current activities we are seeking assistance with:

• Melbourne Zoo Excursion, Thursday, October 21, 9am-3pm – Chaperones are needed for the prep/1/2
excursion to the Melbourne Zoo coming up on Thursday, October 21st. If you can participate in this day as a chaperone,
please let Mrs. Sawyer, Mrs. Thomas or Mrs. Welsh know this week.
• Annual Art Show Preparation, various times – Mrs. Hyland needs assistance in preparing art for the Annual
Ashby Art Show on November 5th (primarily matting pictures). This preparation work can be done anytime, but potential
volunteers need to touch base with Mrs. Hyland on Mondays or Wednesdays for instructions.
Tutti Fruitti Thursdays, Every Thursday, 9-10am – Tutti Fruitti Thursday back up and running this Thursday, October
14th and will run until the 2nd to last week of Term. Assistance is needed this Thursday and every Thursday to prepare
fresh fruit and vegetable trays for the children. If you can help join us this Thursday or any Thursday in the staff room.

Changing the Waratah and Lawton Street School Signs – Can you help change the messages on the school signs
on Waratah and Lawton Street? Thank you to all those who have volunteered for Terms 1,2 and 3. We are looking for
volunteers to sign up for the last term to change the signs. If you are willing to be on the school sign roster you can sign
up on the FOA bulletin Board across from the staff room or send a note through your child’s teacher or the front office.
