History

History of Batu 11 Cheras began with the Cheras River. It is the meeting place

between the Cheras River and Langat River. Local residents named this placed as

Batu 11 due to its distance from Kuala Lumpur is 11 miles (batu). Kapitan Yap

Ah Loy is said to have develop Selangor after civil war 1874. After a review and

consideration, e found that Cheras and Langat River area is suitable for rice

cultivation and hence he plan to develop this area for rice cultivation. Then, he

appointed Chiew Yoke as the head of this project, and after working hard for few

years, Chiew Yoke managed to develop Cheras and Langat River into a large rice

growing area. Langat River and Cheras River also served as the main distribution

centre of rice in the state in which this had made Cheras very busy. At the

beginning of the 20th century, British colonists had been working on rubber

plantations and many Chinese labourers were brought in to inhabit Batu 11 Cheras.

Until 1970, this village has a population of 2595 people and now it has a

population of more than 10 thousand people. SJK (C) Cheras was found in 1952.

In 1990, it has 600 students and the number of students had risen to 3567 in 2009

due to the increase in population.

Social, Culture and Religious practices

There are a few societies in Batu 11. The first one is Rumah Komuniti Agensi

Antidadah Kebangsaan, National Anti- Drugs Agency. This society is a

government agency under Ministry of Home Affairs that is managing affairs

related to of drugs abuse in Malaysia. Their aim is to create a Malaysia that is free

from the threat of drugs.

Furthermore, there is also a society that called “Pusat Rekreasi JKKK Batu 11

Cheras”. In 2009, this society organized Kidney Health Awareness Campaign that

sponsored by NKF. They provided a life check health screening for villagers and a

free talk about „Life Check Health Talk‟. Thus, villagers will be more conscious

about their health.

In addition, there are also other events being held occasionally during day time.

For instance, they will have a Praise Dance every Tuesday, Thursday and

Saturday and it is free of charge. Its aim is for the villagers to relax and spend

their leisure time carrying out healthy exercises.

Transportation wise, most of the villagers ride motorcycle instead of car.

Motorcycle is the main transportation and is more useful for them compare to car.

Besides, the villagers will also go to town by Rapid KL bus.

and one kindergarten named “Tadika Harmoni” for the children at that area.

Tadika Harmoni

The primary school was built since 1937. Initially, it has only around 60 students.

Now, it is consists of 130 teachers and more than 3500 students. Since 1937 until

present, it had 16 headmaster or headmistress over the years. Mr. Wei YaXin (韦

Problems

One of the problems found in village is there is a shortage of government clinic

and hospital. Although there is a private clinic there, the fees they charged are

higher and the villagers cannot afford it.

Besides, as the numbers of cars increase, the road is more congested. Since the

school is also located in the village, the road is often packed during school hours

and caused traffic jam in that area. The roads are also full of pot holes which can

be very dangerous especially during at night. Moreover, most of the motorcyclists

do not wear helmets which show that the road safety awareness among them is not

high.

In addition, there isn‟t any hypermarket around that area. The nearest one is

Carrefour which is 6km away from the village. It is inconvenient for the villagers

to drive all the way out of the village to shop for necessities.

On the other hand, the main economic activity there is the market where most of

the villagers buy their daily products and necessities from. However, the leftovers

rubbish from the market is not properly cleaned and attracts stray dogs to the

village. This is not hygienic and might bring diseases to the villagers.

Recommendation

To encounter these problems, we have come up with some recommendations for

them. First and foremost, there should be at least one small town hospital or

government clinic allocated in the village to ensure the villagers get suitable

treatments provided by the government.

In addition, the narrow roads and pot holes are the major problem there too.

Authorities should repair the damaged roads and if possible build new pathway for

the villagers. This is to ensure the safety of the villagers.

As for the lack of hypermarket, villagers there could share money to open up a

franchise of mini markets such as K-Mart or 99 Speed Mart.

As for the hygiene part, the villagers should organize “gotong-royong” once in a

while to ensure the cleanliness of the area especially the market area.

Besides, government should provide more public transport to excess into the

village. For example like Rapid KL bus or LRT.

Conclusion

All in all, we found that this village has the kind of tranquillity and serene lifestyle

which is rare in this technology dominated world. However, we still hope that

some problems in this village can be solved as soon as possible for the

convenience of the residents here. Besides, we also hope that their harmonious

and cooperative values must also be retained.
