" Ladies and gentlemen,
Good morning and welcome to the 2010
edition of SASRECON - A Conference
where Sport, Recreation, and Physical
Education meet. SASRECON as it were, is
the primary sport science conference in
South Africa and it endeavours to bridge the
gap between science and practice, while
also acting as a forum for the academic,
sport science and research community to
present and share results of recent projects.1O-AUG-2210 16:52 FROM DEPUTY MINISTER TO 12489061 P0387

We must, as delegates from various
sectors, ensure that throughout the
conference, we provide an arena where all
stakeholders of sport, among them,
academics, sports scientists, sports
medicine professionals, national
federations, sports development
Coordinators, coaches, provincial
academies and Government, can participate
as a single body.
Over the years, science conferences have
always been accused of being too academic
and beyond the reach of ordinary Joe and
Jolene. We have this year, tried to demystify
the scientific world to people/who are
expected to make sense of scientific
declarations in their day-to-day lives. To this
effect, we have among us, about 70
Coaches who work with our athletes at
implementation level. We depend on these
Coaches, to create synergy between sport
Science, recreation, and physical education,
