Walk for Jeanette Fritzky. Bob, it is
great to see you back at Rotary again.
Gary Irwin was happy about his
recent lunch with Flor Huart, our
past exchange student, this past
weekend.
Steve Woehleke is happy about
the Red Cross Blood Drive
occurring at St. Mary’s this
afternoon.
President Ron announced that all
of this week’s birthday folks were
absent today. We will have to
catch up with Alka Mulakaluri,
Mary Hogan and Brian South
later!
~ANNOUNCEMENTS~~
John Erickson announced that
our Holiday Party will be held at
the Claeys Lounge at St. Mary’s
College on Tuesday, Dec 11.
John will begin taking reservations
next week. The cost id $60 per
person
Lad Lynch reminded the group
that at next week’s Tuesday
evening meeting, the cost for
dinner will be $25. For those who
prepay for their meals, please
bring the extra $5.
Gary Irwin noted that next week’s
speaker, Roger Howland, from
the Mayflower Society, will talk
about the Pilgrim Thanksgiving.
Come and join us to hear about
the original holiday.
Debbie Roessler reminded us
about the Toys for Tots program
on December 4th. Bring an
unwrapped gift to donate.
Debbie also mentioned that on
Friday, Dec 7, from 6 until 9 pm
at the Hacienda, the Moraga
Police will partner with the Marines
Toys for Tots program for a party
to accept unwrapped toys or cash
gifts. Complimentary beer, wine,
and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
An afternoon party to celebrate the
60th Anniversary of Cliff
Dochterman’s Rotary service
will be held on Saturday, March
30 at the Holy Trinity Hall of the
Serbian Church, so mark your
calendars.
Due to kitchen renovation at
Moraga Country Club, our first
meeting of 2019 will be a dinner
meeting on Tuesday January 8,
to be held at Holy Trinity Hall of
the Serbian Church.
Frank May announced that the
next Nite at the Races committee
meeting will be held on Monday
November 19 at Moraga Royale
starting st 5:30 pm. We need
everyone’s help this year to make
sure our largest fundraiser is a
success.
Frank also announced that 18
members, friends and spouses will
attend the Rotary Day at Golden
Gate Fields on Saturday,
November 17th.

note from Ellen Beans for the
Club’s recent donation to the
Moraga Citizen’s Network.
Business Meeting Update
Our latest business meeting was
held on October 25th. We made
the permanent move to the
Serbian Church which has plenty
of room and will now be meeting
there the 4th Thursday of the
Month. Everyone is invited!
The last meeting had a few last-
minute cancels from owners with
employee challenges but
nevertheless we had a good
turnout.
Cynthia Battenberg, Moraga
Town Manager, was our guest
speaker and led a casual
conversation of several town
developments and challenges. It
was a very captivating discussion
with everyone participating in fact
we ran over on time. Thanks to
Bob Fritzky for recruiting her to
speak.
Frank May reminded all of Nite at
the Races and the organizational
committee meetings.
The next meeting is Thursday
November 29th with one of the
leaders from “ I Kind “ to discuss
their goals are and how we can
help.
The raffle was won by Angelo
Costanza this week.
Unfortunately, the “magic marble”
eluded him.

Our speaker today, Steve
Woehleke was introduced by
Debbie Roessler. Steve is a 30-
year Moraga resident who also
spent 33 years as a Technical
Project Manager at Chevron. He
is currently the President of our
local Kiwanis Club and is married
to Peggy with two daughters.

Steve began his talk about Deep
Water Drilling for oil by explaining
the energy contained in an oil
tanker carrying 8 thousand gallons
of oil. 1 Gallon of oil contains the
energy of 65 sticks of dynamite
which translates into 500,000
sticks of dynamite a very large
potential explosion driving next to
us on the freeway.
Steve took a few minutes to
describe the Macondo well
disaster. He described how a
deep-water oil well works and
what failed to cause the serious
fire, oil leak and loss of life during
this disaster. Steve talked about
the affects of the explosion on the
environment and BP Oil Company
itself.
Macondo Deepwater Disaster
The second part of Steve’s talk
focused on a successful deep-
water drilling operation off the
coast of Nigeria. He described the
Agbani oil field that was built at a
cost of around $10 billion and is
able to pump 250 thousand
barrels of oil per day from the
series of wells. This operation
pumps the oil from the wells below
and stores it before transferring it
to tankers to transport it to
refineries. The platform houses
156 workers and requires 87
megawatts of power to operate.

Rotary’s Worldwide Reputation
Nothing has enhanced the
worldwide reputation of Rotary
International more that our 35-year
involvement in the eradication of
polio. It is perhaps the most
amazing record of sustained effort
by a non-governmental agency.
When we made a commitment to
provide polio vaccine to the world,
there were annually over 300,000
cases of polio in 125 nations of the
world. Today we have less than 25
total cases of polio per year existing
in only two countries – Pakistan
and Afghanistan.
There are many incidents which
illustrate the unusual impact of
Rotary in the challenging task to
eradicate the dreaded disease of
polio.
I recall one instance when I was
chairman of The Rotary Foundation,
I had a phone call from the World
Health Organization to advise me
that they had achieved a four-day
cease-fire in the civil war in the
Sudan, Africa in order to immunize
all their children against polio. I
said, “That is wonderful, but is there
some problem?” The WHO officer
replied, “We need $400,000 to buy
the vaccine, and we have no money
available.” Since the Foundation
Chairman has the authority to make
humanitarian grants in emergency
situations, I was able to say, “I’ll
provide what you need to purchase
the vaccine immediately.” Within
four days, the polio vaccine was
purchased, and emergency health
workers immunized four million
children in the Sudan, Then, the
civil war resumed.
The officer of WHO then confided in
me that, “There was not a single
place in the entire world that they
could call to secure the money to
pay for the vaccine except Rotary
International.”
Occasionally, I have thought about
that moment. I consider it one of
the finest commendations of the
respect and esteem that Rotary is
held in the world. When the task is
nearly impossible -- Rotary
International is the one to get it
done!

who was elected to serve on the
Moraga City Council last night. He
received the highest number of
votes of the three contenders
.
Our speaker, Steve Woehleke, was
also elected to the council.
