Last year, I visited Sidi Belyout an example
of innumerable shrines in Morocco. Inside the
marabout’s tomb, I found the same scene as
elsewhere: pilgrims – both men and women- sat
around the tomb while others covered their
heads with the holy man’s flag and remained
motionless, as though confessing their sins.
[2] At that time, many of the pilgrims flocked to
Sidi Belyout. Girls came to reveal their troubles
to the Wali. "I believe that these saints really do
bring good fortune," Khadija said. "When I was still little, my mother took me all over
Casablanca to meditate at the tombs of the various saints. Only two weeks ago, I stayed
away too long, the holy man came to see me in my dreams to tell me I must visit him.”
[3] Many other women think it’s a sort of spiritual relief. “Last week I didn’t feel well. I
visited Sidi Belyout and found peace in my inner being and I went about my normal
business in total peace," said Ilham Boughaba, a law student. Poor people came flocking to
the marabouts graves on Friday to eat the couscous served by benefactors and annual
festivals, such as the moussem. In addition to praying and requesting blessings, some
people took advantage of the event to find a husband or wife for their unmarried children.
Those who came to meditate at the saints' temples hoped and implored the marabout for
luck.
[4] Tamou's "consultation" changes according to what she hopes to get out of it and her
requests change from visit to visit. "I beg them that my husband will not remarry, that my
son will get himself a good job, and that my
thirty-five-year-old daughter will find a
husband," she declared, with her eyes full of
hope.
[5] Shrine pilgrimage is a wondrous aspect
alone capable of providing satisfaction for a
certain category of people whose cultural
nourishment clearly comes from the
imaginary world. The Wali remains a haven
of peace for the majority of these people.
