COMPREHENSION
TEXT I
Our passport or ID photos are the photos we show to the largest number of different people
during our lives. But how happy are we with our passport photo? Do we make an effort to get a good
one? According to research done by the US printer company Lexmark, the answer varies according to
nationalities. It seems that the Italians are the most embarrassed about their passport photo (21 %
said they didn’t like showing it to other people). On the other hand, 98% of Norwegians said they were
happy with their photos. And the French spend the most time trying to get the perfect photo
(sometimes spending an hour in the photo booth!) We asked three celebrities how they felt about
their passport photos...
Michael Winner
Movie director
“I used to be very proud of my passport photo,” said Michael
Winner. “For more than forty years I looked like an elegant movie director.”
But recently Michael renewed his passport and took a new photo in a photo
booth. “Now I look like a drug dealer,” he says.
Ruth England
TV host
Ruth England spends her life traveling and showing her passport
photo to passport officials around the world. She confessed, “Once I had a
passport photo where I looked really hideous and so deliberately ‘lost’ my
passport and got a new one. For my latest passport, I took several photos
and I chose the best one. It’s pretty good. I’ve had much worse ones.”
Toby Young
Author and journalist
Toby Young said, “I’m often stopped when I go through immigration
because I don’t look like my passport photo at all. In my photo I had a lot
more hair but now I’m bald. No one believes it’s me. So, now I have two
possibilities: take a wig with me every time I travel or get a new passport
photo!”

TEXT II
Two popular restaurants in Paris like beautiful people. They give them better tables than ordinary
people. Staff who used to work there said good-looking customers get the good places. Other people
can see them. Ordinary diners sat in the corner. Celebrity guests always got good tables. The waiters
and waitresses also had to look good. Anyone who was short, without a model’s body and over 30
could not work there.
The owners have a “beauty policy”.They want the restaurants to have a good image. If one owner
saw a “non-attractive” person at a good table, he told the staff: “There are good-looking people, you
put them here; there are bad-looking people, you put them there.” Customers who made telephone
bookings could not ask for a favourite table. Staff decided which table to give them after they came to

TEXT VI
I remember my first job. I worked in an outdoor café one summer. It was called Sunny’s. I got
free drinks and food. My boss Diana was very friendly, and I got along well with her. Her husband Joe
worked there, too, but he was really strict. On my first day, I was late because I got lost on the
subway. After that, Joe was never too happy with me.
So, every day I served sandwiches and coffee. But the café was really busy all the time. I
wasn’t a very good server, so I was usually nervous. And I was always exhausted by the end of the
day.
One day, I was really tired, so I asked to go home early. Joe looked angry, but he said, “OK.
Fine.” I left and went to the subway station which was five hundred metres from Sunny’s. But then I
met my friend Rick on the street. He was really good-looking, and I like him a lot. He said, “Do you
want to go and eat something?” I said, “Yes, Ok, Where?” And he said, “I know a café near here. Let’s
go there. They have good sandwiches.”
So we went back to Sunny’s and sat down to eat! We waited for about ten minutes before Joe
finally came over to the table. He was very busy, so he didn’t look at me. He said, “I’m sorry. One of
the servers left early. Are you ready to order?” We stayed for an hour. I was lucky – my boss never
saw me. But I had to pay for my sandwiches and soda!
