EVANSTON — Newspapers across the United States

One dollar
celebrated Wednesday after the International Trade
Commission (ITC) overturned the tariffs on uncoated SPORTS
groundwood paper imported from Canada. This paper
is used by newspaper publishers across the country and
the tariffs have had a devastating effect on small- and
medium-sized papers. The tariffs had significantly
increased costs for publishers, affecting production
and threatening jobs.
According to the National News Association, the
tariffs came at the request of North Pacific Paper
Corporation (NORPAC), a Washington state mill
purchased by One Rock Capital Partners in 2016.
NORPAC asked the Commerce Department and the
ITC to impose the tariffs. NORPAC’s view was that
Canadian suppliers were unfairly subsidized by their
government and were dumping paper into the U.S.

EVANSTON — A large number
of people gathered at the Evanston
airport bright and early on Saturday
morning, Aug. 25, to watch the annual
air show for Airport Day. Following
a hearty breakfast at 7 a.m. provided
by Boy Scout Troop 911, folks could
wander around the airport hangars,
take pictures and get up close to a
variety of planes.
Scoutmaster Jeff Breininger and
assistant Scoutmaster Randy Bark-
er were at the grill while Karen
Breininger made coffee and helped
the Scouts. Boy Scouts who helped to
provide the breakfast and lunch meals
were Riley Barker Wade Barker and
Ethan Barker.
Members of the Bear River Mod-
elers were flying their model airplanes
near the breakfast hangar which was
fun to watch while enjoying the pan-
cakes and ham.

By the middle of September 2018, the reasons ITC
voted to stop the tariffs will be known and then the
Customs and Border Patrol will stop collecting, and the
money held in deposit will be sorted and returned to the
producers — a process that could take several months.
NORPAC can appeal the decision but tariffs would
not be re-imposed during the appeal process. Also,
Pres. Donald Trump could impose tariffs under na-
tional security authority but there is no indication he
will in this case.
It remains to be seen if Canadian producers will stay

Bear River Rendezvous continues tradition of historical fun hosting

EVANSTON — The 31st annual Bear
River Mountain Man Rendezvous was
held at the Bear River State Park the
weekend of Aug. 24-26, and the event
again provided attendees with shopping
opportunities, multiple skill challenges
and a whole lot of fun.
Ian Siegismund of Evanston spent
the weekend at the rendezvous dressed
in mountain man attire, participating
in challenges, doing some Dutch oven
cooking and camping with his fellow
rendezvous enthusiasts.
Siegismund came in second in this
year’s Mountain Man Walk event, which
requires participants to complete several
challenges including trap setting, rifle
and pistol shooting, tomahawk throw-
ing and knife sticking and fire starting,
among others. He said it was the third
time he’d competed in the walk, although
only his second time to compete as an
adult.
The young man, a recent graduate of
Evanston High School, said he has been
shooting since a young age, first using
a gun built by his grandfather. Ian’s
mom, Jane Siegismund, said the gun was
nearly as big as Ian when he first started.

Evanston man back in court, charged with sex crimes

EVANSTON — A 31-year-
old Evanston man appeared
in Third District Court on
Tuesday, Aug. 28, to be
arraigned on charges of at-
tempted sexual exploitation
of a child and attempted
second-degree sexual abuse
of a minor. Sean Wayne
Weston entered not guilty
pleas on both counts.

vestigation into an inci-
dent involving Weston and
a female client when he
was working as a personal
trainer, Facebook messages
between Weston and “vari-
ous female individuals who
were under the age of 18
years old” were discovered.
One of those female
individuals was 15 years
old at the time Weston al-
legedly sent her messages
of a sexual nature and asked
her to send him nude photos
of herself. Court documents
list multiple messages
wherein Weston allegedly
made sexual comments to
the girl, including some
indicating he knew she was
a minor.
Court documents also
allege Weston tried to get
the girl to sneak out of her
parents’ home and tried
to arrange times for her
to babysit his young child
overnight.
The messages between
Weston and the girl were
allegedly sent over a period
of months in the summer
of 2015.
The incident involv-
ing the female client went
to trial earlier this year
when Weston was found
not guilty on a charge of
first-degree sexual assault.
He was also charged with
attempted sexual exploita-
tion of a minor related to
messages and a relationship
with another girl who was
17 at the time of contact;
however, Uinta County
Attorney Loretta Howi-
eson indicated in court on
Tuesday that charge would
be dismissed without preju-
dice.

disappointment or two, but the
important fact is to really think
before we mark the ballot in
November. I think Evanston
has some serious issues.
One is the lack of police
activity on busy streets, espe-
cially with so many Utah driv-
ers that fail to acknowledge
our speed limits — especially
those pulling a travel trailer,
horse trailer or a motorhome
with a boat or car attached
weaving in and out of traffic
and making a driving night-
mare for us local residents in
a town not really equipped to
deal with excessive traffic.
We also need someone who
has the ability to address the
local issues and keep the resi-
dents informed, not just give
excuses for local concerns.
We’ve had direction in the
past; I hope we can experience
it again with someone who is
involved, open to criticisms
and concerns and dedicated to
our community; someone who
has the strength and ability
to speak out against foolish
agendas.
Voting is a wonderful op-
portunity that we should all
take seriously. Those in office
are the ones who can help our
community remain enjoyable,
safe and informed.

Air, Freedom and Fun” in a
previous community essay
contest. Let’s keep it that way.
It’s an important concept to
truly take to heart, and who
we put into office has a great
influence in maintaining these

T he title of this is: “If I am doing so good,
why do I feel so bad?”
The title is using poor grammar – it should
read: “If I Am Doing So WELL, Why Do I
feel so badly.” Okay, got that out of the way.
This is my story as I am trying to transform
myself from an overweight, out of shape baby
boomer into the person I always wanted to be.
And at the end of this, I want to tell you
about four of my heroes, Jim Hicks of Buffalo,
Chuck Brown of Wheatland, Del McOmie of
Lander and Foster Friess of Jackson. But first:

passed away Aug. 29, after a
long fight with cancer.
She was born Sept. 29, 1952,
to Fern LaVon Easton and
Donald William Beatty. She
attended the Evanston school
system and graduated from
Evanston High School in 1971.
Donna married Dale Con-
dos and they had one child,
Jennifer. They later divorced.
She enjoyed crafts, crocheting,
dancing and gambling.
Donna was preceded in death
by her mother, father, brother

Velma Arlene Hanks, age 90,
passed away Wednesday, Aug.
29. She was a long-time resident
of McKinnon.
Velma was born June 30,
1928, and was raised in Lyman.
She was the daughter of Adolph
and Alice Youngburg and the old-
est of six children; her brothers
are Robert, Wesley, Jerry, Lamar
and Dan.
Velma was a strong, beautiful,
smart woman who married the
love her life, Earl Hanks. They
moved to McKinnon and began
their life together, raising their
family. She was an extremely
talented and accomplished quil-
ter and enjoyed sharing her
creations with her family and
friends. She enjoyed crocheting,
reading books and cooking while
providing for her family.
Velma is survived by her
three sons, Larry (Patty) Hanks
of McKinnon, Kenneth (Bon-
nie) Hanks of Green River,
and Clyde (Michelle) Hanks of
McKinnon; one brother, Dan
Youngberg and his wife Charla
of Lyman; 14 grandchildren; 32
great-grandchildren and nine
great-great-grandchildren.

Wes passed away peacefully
at home with his family beside
him on Aug. 27, 2018. He was
born on Dec. 20, 1927, at his
grandmother’s home, to Bert
and Velma Twitchell in Enter-
prise, Utah.
He spent his early years
in Pioche, Nevada, and later
moved back to Enterprise.
Growing up in the depression
years, he learned early how to
work hard and had many oc-
cupations throughout his life.
Dad always loved driving trucks
and retired from P.I.E. Truck-
ing. He served in the Korean
War, hauling bombs up to the
front lines, and returning with
wounded men.
When Dad returned home,
he met the love of his life,
LaMae Finlinson. They were
married in Delta, Utah, and later
sealed in the St. George Temple.
Dad loved the outdoors,
spending many hours, camping,
hunting and fishing with the
family, always taking “the old
road” to the perfect spot. Dad
always had a companion dog
and sometimes more than one.
He always thought they were
“perfect” and he
treated each as the
“best” one ever.
He loved serv-
ing the Lord in
his many church
callings, also
serving anyone
around who he felt could use
help. Wes and LaMae were
blessed with five daughters, 10
grandchildren and 13.5 great-
grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by
his wife of 63 years; parents;
daughter, Paulette; and sister,
Tom Crank

stands that it’s okay to feel sad, but
that there’s no reason to feel guilty,
thinking it’s their fault that the pet has
to be put to sleep.
If the decision is for euthanasia,
give your child the opportunity to
spend some personal time with the
pet and say goodbye in their own
special way.
After a pet’s death, children should
be allowed to grieve. Let your chil-
dren see that you, too, are sad over the
pet’s death. If you don’t feel the sense
of loss as strongly as your children,
respect their grief and allow them to
express their feelings openly. Don’t
make them feel guilty or ashamed
about their sadness.
Grief doesn’t have a time limit.
For children, as for adults, it’s a per-
sonal thing. However, some special
activities can help soften the griev-
ing process. Holding a funeral or a
memorial service for the deceased pet
can allow children to openly express
feelings and help process the loss.
You may also want to give the child
a chance to create a memorial of the
pet, such as a special photograph.
And don’t rush out and get a
“replacement” pet. Doing so doesn’t
allow a child to grieve the loss being
felt, and can teach that even some-
thing like death can be overcome by
buying a replacement.
Losing a beloved pet is always dif-
ficult. Allow and help your children
to process that loss and learn to cope
with this certainty of life.

miles a day and just finished a rugged four-
month political campaign. He worked everyone
around him into the ground. Nobody could
keep up. At the end, while everyone else was
exhausted, he was fresh as a daisy.
Good health is such blessing. We all want
to live as long as we can. I am on the road to
improvement. By the time I write another one
of these columns, I hope it will be by a much
slimmer person.

dropped out. Supply and demand will de-
termine where prices will go. The initial
damage was devastating to many small
newspapers as the tariffs peaked around 30
percent, though the Commerce Department
later capped the highest tariff at around 17
percent. Some newspapers have already
folded, many have scaled issues down and
jobs were lost or not replaced.
What caused the ITC to overturn the
tariffs? The News Media Alliance and
Resolute Inc., which supplies much of
the U.S. produced newsprint, along with
publishers, editors, attorneys, industries,
writers and private citizens joined a peti-
tion against the tariffs and all contributed
to the ruling of ITC against the tariffs.
The National Newspaper Association
and the Stop the Tariffs on Printers and
Publishers Coalition had given testimony
to the ITC regarding the damage to newspa-
pers and argued that any injury to domestic
paper companies came from the falling
demand for paper not from the import of
Canadian uncoated groundwood paper.

CEO David Chavern released a statement
immediately upon hearing of the ITC
decision.
“We applaud the International Trade
Commission (ITC) for today reaching a fi-
nal, unanimous negative determination that
Canadian imports of uncoated groundwood
paper, which includes newsprint, used by
newspapers, do not cause material harm
to the U.S. paper industry,” the statement
reads. “Fortunately, our voice was heard
at the ITC hearing last month, and they
made the right call today in reversing these
harmful tariffs.”
In Wyoming, U.S. Sens. Mike Enzi and
John Barrasso and Rep. Liz Cheney all
applauded the decision by the ITC to re-
verse the tariffs. The Wyoming delegation
submitted testimony last month to the ITC
asking them to end the tariffs after taking
into account the devastating effects they
could have on local papers.
Enzi said, “Our local papers play a vi-
tal role in the state and shouldn’t have to
struggle to survive because of these tariffs
that were being pushed by one company.”
“These punishing tariffs have signifi-
cantly increased costs for publishers, ham-
pered production and threatened good jobs
at newspapers across our state,” Barrasso
said. “Now that they have been removed,
Wyoming’s newspapers can renew their
focus on keeping communities informed
and up to date.”
Cheney said, “Local newspapers in
Wyoming are small businesses that rely
on uncoated groundwood paper to provide
essential local and national news coverage
to communities, sometimes as their only
news source. The ITC made the right
decision.”
The Herald asked Wyoming Press Asso-
ciation Executive Director Darcie Hoffland
for her response to the ITC decision.
“Today’s decision by the International
Trade Commission to reverse the newsprint
tariff is a huge victory,” Hoffland said.
“The hard work put forth to fight the most
critical challenge to our industry of late has
been awe-inspiring, and on behalf of the
Wyoming Press Association I would like
to extend our sincerest thanks to our mem-
bers, publishers, readers and the Wyoming
congressional delegation for their efforts to
put a stop to the tariff.”

tend to be cheaper than diamonds.
We went on a whale watching excursion in Juneau, hiked in
Skagway and spent a day swimming in Ketchikan. I’m kidding,
but it did rain the entire time we were in the Salmon Capital of
the World. Fortunately, we were smart enough to pack umbrellas.
Unfortunately, we weren’t smart enough to bring them with us
when we got off the ship. Lucky we had the caps.
And now we’re back on the ship, dried off and dancing.
When the band leader asked for requests, my husband sug-
gested a polka. I thought he was joking. The band leader didn’t
see it that way.
We’ve taken dance classes, though you can’t tell by watching
us dance. Despite the classes, we like to wait until the dance
floor is full before we get out there. But, either no one else here
knows how to polka or they won’t admit it. I felt obligated since
the request came from us, so I leaned over to my dance partner
of 30 years and whispered in his ear, “Let’s dance. We’ll never
see these people again.”

Friess almost immediately blamed
Democrats who crossed over to cast
GOP ballots as the reason he lost.
In an email to Wyoming Republican
Chairman Frank Eathorne, and each
of the other also-rans, he proposed
changing election law to restrict party
changes at the polls. He also suggested
instituting a runoff election to give
ultra-conservatives who now split the
vote a better chance at gaining the
nomination.
Wyoming Republican legislators
who’ve been upset by fringe candi-
dates losing previous gubernatorial pri-
maries have tried but failed to pass bills
restricting party affiliation changes.
One that made the limit at least 30 days
before a primary passed the House in
2017 but failed by one vote to make it
out of the Senate Corporations Com-
mittee. No doubt we’ll see similar bills
introduced next year.
Friess also made the outlandish
claim that “the Democrats have been
able to control our elections.”
You can’t hear me chuckling but
believe me, I am. How dare all those
powerful Democrats (who accounted
for 18 percent of the state’s total
registered voters on Aug. 1) pick on
Republicans and choose their stan-
dard-bearer? Never mind that there
were 177,604 registered Republicans
before the polls opened on Tuesday
and that about 148,000 — roughly 83
percent — chose not to vote for him.
Yep, it had to be those crafty Dems.
Similar whining resulted after the
2010 GOP primary for governor when
Matt Mead, who went on to win in a
landslide in the general election, nar-
rowly defeated Rita Meyer and Ron
Micheli, two candidates who ran to his
right. Yep, Democrats were accused of
calling the shots in that election, too.
Here’s an idea for Wyoming Repub-
licans: If a majority of you can’t stand
right-wing candidates for governor los-
ing, pick one of the hopefuls to throw
his/her hat in the ring and have the
others bow out. How would the field
be pared? Take your pick — in smoke-
filled back rooms, by straw ballot, or a
spirited contest of rock-paper-scissors?
But that’s ridiculous, right? Any
Republican who wants to file for the
office has that right under the demo-
cratic principles we hold dearly. Party
officials shouldn’t decide the outcome,
that’s up to voters — all voters. Politi-
cal parties are not exclusive clubs in
this country. Even Democrats have the
right to play. Likewise if Republicans
want to switch party affiliations, let
them. Democrats wouldn’t mind see-
ing their numbers increase, if only for
the party’s morale.
I agree with Phoebe Stoner, ex-
ecutive director of the Equality State
Policy Center, who told WyoFile
reporter Andrew Graham that Friess’
email “contradicts the very spirit of
Wyoming.”
“Citizens of Wyoming have the
fundamental right to vote for who they
believe to be the best candidate in the
race of their choice,” Stoner said. “We
should not be working to restrain them
because some didn’t get the results
they wanted.”
The failure of Trump to influence
Wyoming’s election was not missed
by Fox News, whose commentator
Peter Roff wrote, “In picking Gordon,
Wyoming voters opted for an insider
who is completing his first full term in
statewide office. He’ll face Democrat
Mary Throne in November … but
that’s almost an afterthought.”
Memo to Mr. Roff: Pundits wrote
off Ed Herschler, Mike Sullivan and
Dave Freudenthal because of the
tremendous advantage registered
Republicans always have over the
opposition. Do you recognize any of
those fellows? They were all Demo-
cratic Wyoming governors who won
by handy margins.
With all apologies to Fox News and
President Trump, who are apparently
confident they know what’s best for
Wyoming, let’s give voters in the state
some credit. They have a long history
of voting for men and women on the
basis of far more than their party af-
filiation
I think Friess’ loss owes less to his
endorsement and more to statements
like this from the candidate: “God has
blessed me with resources that I’m
sure He would like to be put to use to
further our Founding Father values and
His values.”
Another memo to Mr. Friess: Be-
lieve it or not, some voters don’t like to
be reminded how rich politicians are.
And even the most religious persons
among us might take offense at your
suggestion that God and George Wash-
ington want you to guide Wyoming.
The last time I looked, neither of
them were registered to vote here —
either as Democrats or Republicans.

Those people who came early
got the added benefit of watching
all of the planes fly in and land in
front of the audience. The actual
show started at 10:30 a.m. and
continued until 1 p.m.
The CAF Rocky Mountain
Wing Museum that brought the
Avenger to the show is one of 75
national detachments of the na-
tional Commemorative Air Force
nonprofit aviation association
dedicated to honoring American
military aviation through flight,
exhibit and remembrance.
The TBM was already next to
the airport building when people
started arriving. A ladder was at-
tached, and people were invited
to climb up and look inside the
plane. They also had memora-
bilia for sale and several of the
Force’s TBM-3 is documented
as having served the U.S. Navy
and the Royal Canadian Navy (as
a sub hunter aboard the HMCS
Magnificent, 1950-1960). It was
one of only 12 aircraft that flew
over the coronation of Queen
Elizabeth II. The TBM at the
show on Saturday has appeared
in several movies and is one of
less than 20 that are still flying
of the almost 10,000 originally
built.
Pilots flying the planes for
the show were from Colorado,
Idaho, Wyoming and Utah. John
Bagley brought the P51D Mus-
tang WWII fighter plane from
the Legacy Flight Museum of
Rexburg, Idaho.
The show began with Mark
W. “Rocket” Liggett of Powell,
serving as announcer. Rocket
has been the announcer for the
Evanston show for the last three
years. He has been flying himself
since the age of 10 and he said his
father, who helped to design the
for the audience below them.
After the sky divers had
reached the ground, the acro-
batic mini-jet planes flown by
Tom Larkin and Chuck Ditman
performed. They would fly close
to the tarmac in front of the audi-
ence again and again making for
a thrilling show. Ditman’s dark
blue and orange mini-jet was
once owned by John Denver.
During the performances of
the large blue MXS plane, one
of the IHC LifeFlight pilots
received an emergency call and
the audience all turned to watch
the helicopter rise and take off, an
unexpected addition to the show.
It was quite an exciting day for
Evanston men, women and chil-
dren who took the time to come
to the local airport and view the
air show. And if they looked to the
west in the distance at one point,

Evanston hosts ‘Border Wars’ this weekend

EVANSTON — The inaugural
“Border Wars” volleyball tourna-
ment may already be underway
by the time this issue of the
Herald reaches you, unless you
happen to be an early-morning
riser and reader. The varsity ac-
tion will feature seven Wyoming
schools battling seven Utah
schools on two courts at Evanston
High School in Red Devil Gym.
Davis Middle School will be
home to junior varsity matchups;
both tournaments begin at 8 a.m.
each day.

The Evanston team has 10
seniors on the roster which would
ordinarily equate to a plethora of
returning experience, but that’s
not necessarily the case, as far as
varsity experience is concerned.
“Over the past couple of sea-
sons, we have graduated some
very deep classes of volleyball
seniors,” Lawlar told the Herald.
What Lawlar’s 2018 squad
may lack in terms of experience,
they may very well make up for
with intelligence and game-sav-
viness, when it comes to strategy.
“This may be one of the smart-
est teams I’ve ever coached,”
Lawlar shared. The team will ac-
tually ask their coach to stop dur-
ing a certain type of drill, because
they don’t quite understand the
purpose of the drill or they desire
clarification. The coach explains
it is simply due to their overall
lack of experience, but Lawlar
finds it refreshing and sees the
process as a strength and a sign of
intelligence and comprehension.
“I appreciate their diligence
and their desire for a deeper
understanding of the game of
volleyball,” Lawlar avowed.
“We have a lot of work to do
and need lots of touches, but I’m
excited about what I’m seeing
and the progression we’re expe-
riencing. We can see a significant
growth in a two-hour practice,”
the coach shared.
“We are definitely on the right
track.”
Lawlar pointed out at least
one team strength with this year’s
team.

Red Devil football will battle Rawlins Outlaws in home-opener

EVANSTON — The home opener for Red Devil football will
take place tonight as the Rawlins Outlaws invade Kay Fackrell
Stadium. Rawlins came from behind to defeat Evanston in Raw-
lins last season, 23-20. The Outlaws finished the 2017 season

with a 7-3 record, their best season since winning the 3A state
championship in 2000.
The Outlaws have a new head coach in Clayton McSpadden,
a fairly-recent graduate of Rawlins High School, who desired to
return to coach at his alma mater.
While Evanston opened up the season with a 48-6 road win at
Altamont, Utah, the Outlaws more or less scrimmaged the Lyman
Eagles in zero week competition, as no final scores were reported.
“They have the two backs returning,” Red Devil football head
coach Pat Fackrell told the Herald, referring to Kadin Forney and
Damon Taylor, who last year combined for nearly 100 yards of
rushing per game. Forney will also shore up the Rawlins defense
at linebacker, along with fellow returing all-conference selection
Lorenzo Ebell at defensive back.
“They’re fundamentally sound and well-coached and will show
us different looks. As with most games, it will come down to block-
ing and tackling. We need to stay disciplined,” Fackrell added.
The coach was glad to have the game experience from the past
week and especially to come away injury-free, aside from the
normal bumps and bruises which are inherent to the sport.
Evanston put up impressive numbers offensively, but much of
their success on offense was a result of playing sound defensively
and forcing turnovers which led to scoring opportunities.
The Red Devil defense forced at least four turnovers, including
three pass-interceptions.
When quizzed about his ball-hawks, Fackrell attributed the
successful take-aways to their work ethic and dedication.
“Our kids believe in their ability due to the time they’ve put in
and the confidence they have gained,” Fackrell said.
Rawlins will have a new signal-caller at the helm in six-foot,
three-inch senior, Jeremiah Forney, though Kadin Forney does have
some experience at quarterback from last season. The receiving
corp will likely be led by Ebell, although six-foot, seven-inch tight
end Hunter Pixler is an undeniable target.
Evanston has the luxury of a returning quarterback in senior
Seth Lloyd, who also saw time under center as a sophomore.
“Seth is a very good quarterback who demands a lot of himself
and of his teammates. He’s a vocal leader for us,” Fackrell said.
Lloyd should be able to spread the wealth among a talented
group of receivers in senior wide-outs Cris Periman and Reid
Gross, slot Kody Smith and tight end Rylie Griggs, not to mention
Tyus Cornia and Pablo Escalante, out of the backfield, along with
Angel Rodriguez, who can line up as a receiver or running back.
Speaking of the backfield, while official stats were not kept in
the game against Altamont, Cornia did have four touchdown runs
and likely eclipsed 200 yards in rushing last week, giving Evanston

Cross-country teams off and
running to Soda Springs, ID.

EVANSTON — The Evanston
cross-country teams opened
the season in Roy, Utah, in
the Royal Run and fared quite
well, with both teams finishing
middle of the pack against some
high-caliber Utah teams. Coach
Ryan Berger was pleased with
his Lady Red Devil and Red
Devil teams.
“I was very proud of our
kids. This is a great race to begin
our season and we faced some
awesome competition, as we
expected we would,” Berger told
the Herald.
“I’m not making any ex-
cuses, but this was our first time
out and most of the teams we
faced have one or two meets
under their belt,” Berger said.

“It’s nice having the Wasatch
Front so close. It’s a quicker
trip for us than racing most
anywhere in Wyoming and the
level of competition we face in
Utah and Idaho will only make
us better,” Berger said.
The cross-country teams are
Soda Springs, Idaho-bound this
Saturday.
“Soda Springs will be an
even bigger meet than Roy with
a lot more teams taking part. It
will be a 5K or 3.1 mile race on a
fast course and we’re gearing up
for it. We’re in good shape and
it’s going to be fun,” Berger said.

EVANSTON — Two Lady
Red Devils qualified for the
state meet in their first time
out at last week’s double dual
in Rawlins.
Rachel Buzarde qualified
in the 50-yard freestyle with
a time of 26.99 seconds. The
state qualifying mark is 28
seconds. Buzarde also met the
state qualifying time of six
minutes, 10 seconds for the
500-yard freestyle with her
5:57 time in the distance event.
Team newcomer Addy Fer-
nandez, who was a state quali-
fier for Rock Springs last sea-
son as a freshman, will attend
the state meet for Evanston in
2018. Her time of 1:09.35 in the
100-yard butterfly is faster than
the state standard of 1:11.00.
In team scoring, Evanston
defeated Rawlins, 118-57,
but fell to Rock Springs by 20
points, 99-79. Rock Springs
also bested Rawlins, 118-57.

According to Lawlar, the
tournament was the brainchild
of two volleyball parents, Ben
Critchfield and Bryon Johnson,
who had longed to see Evanston
host an invitational type of tour-
nament. Critchfield had made
a number of contacts in Utah
through club volleyball compe-
tition. He and Johnson began
talking and checking feasibility
factors before proposing the idea
to Uinta County School District
No. 1 activities director Bubba
O’Neill, who very much liked
the concept. Contacts were made,
logistics were considered and
finalized, invitations were sent
and this weekend’s Border Wars
tournament was born.
“It’s a neat opportunity for
our girls, the visiting teams,
our school and our community.
We’re really excited. Labor Day
weekend is a great time to visit
Evanston,” Lawlar told the Her-
ald.
“We are known for our hos-
pitality, in treating people like
family. Hopefully when they
discover all there is to see and
do in and around Evanston at this
time of year, they’ll want to ex-
tend their holiday weekend in the
Evanston area and this becomes
an annual event.”

Brucellosis is a bacterial
disease endemic in elk and bison
throughout the area surrounding
Yellowstone in Wyoming, Idaho
and Montana. A state/federal
eradication program has almost
eliminated the disease in cattle,
but infected elk and bison pose
a continuing threat.
Voluntary hunter participa-
tion is fundamental for the pro-
gram’s success, and Game and
Fish appreciates hunter efforts
to submit samples. Those who
draw multiple elk licenses and
receive multiple kits will be en-
tered into the raffle for each kit
returned. The raffle drawing will
