Unit Title: Trigonometric Functions Name: Daniel Arciniega

Content Area: Math- Algebra II Grade Level: 10- 12
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
F-TF: Extend the domain of trigonometric functions using the unit circle
2. Explain how the unit circle in the coordinate plane enables the extension of trigonometric functions to all real numbers, interpreted as radian measu
of angles traversed counterclockwise around the unit circle.
5.Derive using similarity the fact that the length of the arc intercepted by an angle is proportional to the radius, and define the radian measure of the
angle as the constant of proportionality; derive the formula for the area of a sector. Convert between degrees and radians. CA
Prove and apply trigonometric identities.
8. Prove the Pythagorean identity sin2 (θ) + cos2 (θ) = 1 and use it to find sin(θ), cos(θ), or tan(θ) given sin(θ), cos(θ), or tan(θ) and the quadrant of th
angle.

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Big Ideas:
How do trigonometric functions help us?
- Understand the importance of the unit circle, it’s the study in which we build and study trigonometry.
- How can we use the unit circle to obtain trig identities?
- Can students apply properties of the unit circle, along with the knowledge of a circle to figure out arc length?
- Can students use trig identities to solve equations, or convert from degrees to radians, and vice versa?
- Understand why we use radians to measure angles instead of degrees.

Unit Goals:
The overall unit goal is for students to understand how the unit circle is important to the study of trigonometry
1. Students can find a pattern linking the ratio of sides of a triangle with the angles and hence understand the concepts of sine, cosine and tangent rat
of angles

2. Students will learn to apply and use the 6 basic trig. Functions
Unit Summary:

In this unit we will introduce the topic of the unit circle and how it relates to the world of trigonometry. It will be the students first look into
world of trigonometry, therefore review of past topics will be essential for the understanding of what the unit will be about. Students at first
will be introduced to the topic and how it stems from geometry, therefore seeing the similarities it takes from the special triangles. Students
then be able to use the old information to obtain new information in understanding the unit circle such as: trigonometric functions, radians,
length, and a few other ideas.

Assessment Plan:
Entry-Level: Formative: Summative:
1. Review Special Triangles 1. Examples on converting degrees to 1. Art Project on Unit Circle
2. Guided Notes: Unit Circle- What is it? radians 2. Unit Exam
3. Guided notes: Sine/Cosine/Tan, filling out unit circle 2. Quiz- Completing a quadrant of a unit
circle
3. Worksheet: Completing other quadrants
of unit circle, solving for arc length,
using functions to get radians
4. Quizlet Vocabulary Flashcards and take
home quiz

Lesson 2 (Webercise/ iPad Lesson)
Student Learning Objective: Acceptable Evidence: Lesson Activities:

Students will be able to apply Students will be able to Students will participate in a Desmos activity. They will answer questions o
the unit circle properties, convert from degrees to their iPad as well of interacting with a unit circle. The questions will range
along with trig identities to radians and vice-versa. While from easy to challenging, regarding using the identities and trig functions to
solve arc length problems, and using information from the solve identity problems, arclength or converting.

Lesson 3 (Graphic Organizer)

Student Learning Objective: Acceptable Evidence: Lesson Activities:

Students know the unit circle Students will fill out the Students will work alone and try to fill out the unit circle as best as they can
completely, that includes sheet as much as they can, students do not know a degree, or some coordinates, they will write that in
degrees, radians, and and what they do not know red. This will let myself know who needs to study more and understand the
coordinates. will remain for them to study unit circle. That way they prepare for the unit test that will come at the end
further.
