SECTION 07900 - JOINT SEALERS

PART 1 GENERAL

1.01 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Provide Sealants in accordance with the requirements of the Contract


Documents.

B. The work of this Section shall include, but not be limited to, the following:

1. Exterior weather joints between similar and dissimilar materials.


2. Exterior horizontal traffic joints.
3. Interior movement joints.
4. Interior joints and seams between different trades constructed to fit
together in the final work.
5. Interior sanitary sealant joints.
6. Interior miscellaneous caulking not specified in other Sections of Work.
7. Internal and external glazing.

C. The words "caulking" and "sealant" shall be considered synonymous on the


Contract documents. it shall be understood that both words define materials for
sealing joints or seams watertight.

1.04 SUBMITTALS

A. Submit under provisions of Section 01300: Submittals.

B. Product Data: Provide data indicating sealant chemical characteristics,


performance criteria, substrate preparation, limitations, color availability.

C. Samples: Submit one sample, 300x300 mm in size illustrating sealant colors for
selection.

D. Manufacturer's Installation Instructions: Indicate special procedures, surface


preparation, perimeter conditions requiring special attention.

1.05 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. General Joint Sealer Performance Requirements: Select materials for


compatibility with joint surfaces and other indicated exposures.

1. Select modulus of elasticity and hardness or grade recommended by


manufacturer for each application indicated.
2. Where exposed to foot traffic, select materials of sufficient strength and
hardness to withstand stiletto heel traffic without damage or deterioration
of sealer system.

B. Color Selection: Provide colors indicated or if not indicated, to match adjacent


material or paint color.

1. Provide custom colors where required.

a. Colors: Selected by Engineer.

C. Perform work in accordance with sealant manufacturer's requirements for


preparation of surfaces and material installation instructions.

D. Contractor shall require sealant manufacturer to review the project joint


conditions and details for this Section of the work. Contractor shall submit to
the Engineer written certification from the sealant manufacturer that joints are of
the proper size and design, that the materials and backing, that the materials will
properly perform to provide permanent watertight, airtight or vaportight seals (as
applicable), and that materials supplied meet specified performance
requirements.

E. Certification shall include copies of manufacturers test regarding adhesion and


staining of adjacent.

F. Perform acoustical sealant application work in accordance with ASTM C919.

G. Maintain one copy of each document on site.

1.06 QUALIFICATIONS

A. Installer of sealants shall have a minimum of five (5) years of successful


experience in the application of the type of materials specified in this section and
only skilled workmen shall be used for the work.
B. Manufacturer of sealants shall provide a qualified technical representative who will
visit the site for the purpose of advising the Contractor of the proper procedures
and precautions in the application of the materials.

1.07 MOCK-UP

A. Provide mockups to include sealant joints in all required conditions including


window, wall, and floor under provisions of Section 01400: Quality Control.
Samples will show colour, finish, backings and finishes.
B. Construct mockup with specified sealant types and with other components noted.
C. Locate where directed.
D. Mockup may not remain as part of the Work.

1.08 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Maintain temperature and humidity recommended by the sealant manufacturer


during and after installation.

1.09 COORDINATION

A. Coordinate work under provisions of Section 01039.


B. Coordinate the work with all sections referencing this section.

1.10 WARRANTY

A. Provide ten year warranty under provisions of Section 01700: Contract


Closeout.

B. Warranty: Include coverage for installed sealants and accessories which fail to
achieve air tight seal, water tight seal, exhibit loss of adhesion or cohesion, or do
not cure.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.01 SEALANTS

A. General: Provide a complete system of cleaners, primers, fillers, tapes, backer rods
and tapes and sealants in accordance with the manufacturer's requirements and the
standards specified herein.

1. Color of Sealants : For concealed joints provide manufacturer's standard


color which has the best overall performance qualities for the application
shown. For exposed joints the Engineer will select colors from the
manufacturer's standard colors or special colors as specified elsewhere.

C. 1-Part Polyurethane Sealants (SLNR-11): Polyurethane based 1 part elastomeric


sealant, complying with Fed. Spec. TT-S-00230C, Type II Class A, with
elongation and compression of not less than 25 percent. ASTM C-920, Type S,
Class 25, Grade NS.

1. Location: Use Type 11 for interior joints subject to movement.


2. Colors: Provide custom colors as selected by Engineer.

D. 2-Part Polyurethane Sealant (SLNT-12): Polyurethane based 2 part elastomeric


sealant, complying with Fed. Spec. TT-S-00227, Type II, Class A, with
elongation and compression of not less than 25 percent. ASTM C-920, Type M,
Class 25, Grade NS.

1. Location: Use Type 12 for exterior joints within masonry and concrete
2. Colors: Provide custom colors as selected by Engineer.

E. 2-Part Polyurethane Sealant for Horizontal Applications (SLNT-13): Self


leveling polyurethane based 2 part elastomeric sealant, complying with Fed.
Spec. TT-S-00227E, Type I, Class A, with shore A hardness of not less than 30 and
elongation and compression of not less than 25 percent. ASTM C-920, Type M,
Class 25, Grade P.

1. Location: Use Type 13 for joints subject to pedestrian or vehicle traffic.


2. Colors: Provide custom colors as selected by Engineer.

F. Medium Modulus Silicone Rubber Sealant (SLNT-21): Silicone rubber based, 1


part neutral cure elastomeric sealant with plus 50 percent to minus 50 percent
movement complying with ASTM C-920 and Fed. Spec. TT-S-001543, Class A, and
recommended by manufacturer for joints.

1. Location: Use Type 21 for exterior joints subject to movement, NOT in


contact with EIFS.
2. Colors: Provide custom colors as selected by Engineer.

G. Medium Modulus Silicone Rubber Sealant (SLNT-22): Silicone rubber based, 1


part neutral cure elastomeric sealant with plus 50 percent to minus 50 percent
movement specially design for exterior application to reduce bleeding and
mildew growth complying with ASTM C-920.

1. Location: Use Type 22 for exterior joints in metal panels and exterior
ceramic tile.
2. Colors: Provide custom colors as selected by Engineer.

H. Ultra Low-Modulus Silicone Rubber Sealant (SLNT-23): Silicone rubber based,


1 part neutral cure elastomeric sealant with plus 100 percent to minus 50 percent
movement complying with ASTM C-920 and Fed. Spec. TT-S-001543, Class A.

1. Location: Use Type 22 for joints in contact with EIFS.


2. Colors: Provide custom colors as selected by Engineer.

I. High Modulus Silicone Rubber Sealant (SLNT-24): One part nonacid-curing


silicone.

1. Location: Use Type 23 for joints related to structural glazing.


2. Colors: Provide custom colors as selected by Engineer.

J. Mildew-Resistant Silicone Rubber Sealant (SLNT-25): Silicone rubber based, 1


part mildew resistance sealant with integral fungicide complying with Fed. Spec. TT-
S-001543, Class A. Specifically recommended by manufacturer for interior joints
in wet areas around plumbing fixtures and ceramic tile.

1. Location: Use Type 25 for joints in ceramic tile walls and floors, around
equipment, and around plumbing fixtures.
2. Colors: Provide custom colors as selected by Engineer.

J. Acrylic Sealants (SLNT-30): General purpose, paintable acrylic-emulsion


sealant with plus 7.5 percent to minus 7.5 percent movement. complying with
ASTM C834.

1. Location: Use Type 30 for interior joints NOT subject to movement.


2. Colors: Provide custom colors as selected by Engineer.
3. Acceptable manufacturers and product: Alternative manufacturers of
products of equal quality may be proposed for approval.

K. 2-Part Polysulfide Sealant (SLNT-41): Polysulfide based, 2 part elastomeric


sealant with plus 25 percent to minus 25 percent movement complying with Fed.
Spec. TT-S-00227, Type II. Class A, non-sag synthetic rubber formulated from
"Thiokol LP" polymer and recommended by manufacturer for continuous
submersion in chlorinated water.

1. Location: Use Type 41 for joints submerged in treated water, including


swimming pools and whirlpools.

2. Colors: Provide custom colors as selected by Engineer.

L. Foam Gasket Seal

1. Foam Gasket Seal (FGS-1): Precompressed, impregnated open-cell foam


sealant incorporating permanently elastic open cell polyurethane foam,
manufacturer's standard impregnating agent, and pressure sensitive
backing.

a. Acceptable manufacturers and products: Alternative


manufacturers of products of equal quality may be proposed for
approval.

2. Foam Gasket Seal for Submerged Application (FGS-2): Precompressed,


impregnated open-cell foam sealant incorporating permanently elastic open
cell polyurethane foam, manufacturer's impregnating agent at higher levels
than standard product, and pressure sensitive backing.

a. Specially design for use in submerged application.

b. Acceptable manufacturers and products: Alternative manufacturers


of products of equal quality may be proposed for approval.

3. Splice Adhesive for Foam Gasket Seal: 1 part urethane wet sealant as
recommended by gasket seal manufacturer.

2.02 ACCESSORIES

A. Primer/Sealer: Non-staining type, recommended by sealant manufacturer to suit


application.

B. Joint Cleaner: Non-corrosive and non-staining type, recommended by sealant


manufacturer; compatible with joint forming materials.

C. Bond Breaker Tape: Polyethylene tape recommended by sealant manufacturer.


Provide self-adhesive tape where applicable and as recommended by sealant
manufacturer.

D. Sealant Backer Rod at Horizontal Surfaces Only: Compressible rod stock of


polyethylene jacketed polyurethane foam as recommended by sealant
manufacturer for compatibility with sealant.

E. Sealant Backer Rod at Other Surfaces: Open cell urethane backer rod.

PART 3 EXECUTION

3.01 EXAMINATION

A. Verify that substrate surfaces and joint openings are ready to receive work.

B. Verify that joint backing and release tapes are compatible with sealant.

3.02 PREPARATION

A. Remove loose materials and foreign matter which might impair adhesion of
sealant.

B. Clean, prepare, and size joints to comply with manufacturer’s recommendations.

1. Remove loose materials and foreign matter which might impair adhesion
of sealant.

2. Etch concrete and masonry joint surfaces as recommended by sealant


manufacturer.

3. Roughen vitreous and glazed joint surfaces as recommended by sealant


manufacturer.
C. Verify joint shaping materials and release tapes are compatible with sealant.

D. Apply primer/sealer to surfaces recommended by sealant manufacturer,


following manufacturer’s recommendations.

3.03 INSTALLATION

A. Install sealant in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

B. Measure joint dimensions and size materials to achieve required 2:1 width/depth
ratios.

C. Install joint backing to achieve a neck dimension no greater than 1/3 of the joint
width.

D. Install bond breaker where joint backing is not used.

E. Install sealant free of air pockets, foreign embedded matter, ridges, and sags.

F. Apply sealant within recommended application temperature ranges. Consult


manufacturer when sealant cannot be applied within these temperature ranges.

G. Tool joints to match approved mock-up.

H. Sealant Adhesion Field Test: Comply with the following.

1. Weathering Sealant Adhesion: After liquid-applied sealant is fully


cured, perform sealant adhesion test according to sealant
manufacturer’s recommendations.

2. Structural Glazing Sealant Adhesion: After sealant is fully cured,


perform not less than 2 adhesion tests for structural silicone sealant
per skylight complying with AAMA Structural Sealant Glazing

Systems Design Guide.

3.04 CLEANING

A. Clean work under provisions of 01700: Contract Closeout.


B. Clean adjacent soiled surfaces.

3.05 PROTECTION OF FINISHED WORK

A. Protect finished installation under provisions of Section 01500: Construction


Facilities and Temporary Controls.
B. Protect sealants until cured.
