OBJECTIVE AND EVALUATION OF OBJECTIVES

LESSON PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVE/EVALUATION (4 points:)
The student will be able to write a description of an animal using at least 3 adjectives.

MATERIALS: (1 point)
Paper
Pictures of animals
Example of animal and description
Menus
Markers
Adoption Ads

ANTICIPATORY SET: (2 points)

I am going to have different adjectives written out that would be used to describe foods and
have students read over them and tell me what they think of the words being used.

LESSON INTRODUCTION: (2 points)

“Today we are going to practice using great descriptive words and then you are going to use
descriptive words to create an ad for an animal to get adopted.”
TEACHER INSTRUCTION: (2 points)
“When you are writing, it is important to use really great descriptors so that the reader is able
to picture what you are writing about. In order to become good at using descriptors, we need
to practice because we do not want to use the same words repeatedly when describing an
object. We also do not want to use boring words or words that are not very descriptive. If I use
words such as fun, boring, or exciting, I am not being specific. I need to explain why something
was fun, boring, or exciting. When good descriptors are not used, the reader can create any
image in their head that does not match what we are thinking or we can leave them
questioning what we are writing about, so it is important to make sure that we use plenty of
description so that they are picturing exactly what we want them to. Another word for
descriptors or descriptive words is adjective. When we are writing, words that are used to
describe items are called adjectives. When we use adjectives, we can use one single word to
describe something or we can use a phrase (more than one word) to describe something.”

This is where I will have students choose the best descriptive words out of the words I have
given and explain why they liked these words.

“Now that we have had some practice with descriptive words, we are going to use what we
have just learned and apply it to a menu and then to write our own ad.”

CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING: (2 points)

I will ask students what the difference is between a bland descriptor and a good descriptor. I
will then have them each think of their favorite toy and have them describe it to the other
person to determine if they understand how to use good descriptors.

APPLICATION/GUIDED PRACTICE/INDEPENDENT PRACTICE: (2 points)

Guided practice: I will have the students work together, using one menu, to find the best
descriptors on the menu. I will have them then read the item that they chose without any
descriptor words and ask them which version is better and why.
Independent practice: Each student will be able to choose a picture of a dog or cat that needs
“adopted.” The students’ task will be to create an ad for this animal, using as many descriptors
as possible.

CLOSURE: (2 points
“Today we learned how to use descriptive words to make our writing better. Including more
description in your writing is a way to make sure that the reader is picturing exactly what you
want them to see from the words that you are using. I hope you will add more descriptors in
your writing to make it even better.”

DIFFERENTIATED INSTRUCTION: (2 points)

Both of my students are ESOL 
PRESENTATION/SAMPLE/DELIVERY: (3 points)

I will have a poster with descriptive food words on it made prior to practicum. I am also going
to have adoption ads already created and then will allow students to glue the picture of the
animal that they are going to write about on the ad. I am also going to have a takeout menu
present for the students to use.
