The Signal Man

by Charles Dickens

Biography of the Author

Charles Dickens (Charles John Huffam Dickens) was born in Landport,


Portsmouth, on February 7, 1812. Charles was the second of eight children to John
Dickens (1786–1851), a clerk in the Navy Pay Office, and his wife Elizabeth Dickens
(1789–1863). The Dickens family moved to London in 1814 and two years later to
Chatham, Kent, where Charles spent early years of his childhood. Due to the financial
difficulties they moved back to London in 1822, where they settled in Camden Town, a
poor neighborhood of London.

The defining moment of Dickens's life occurred when he was 12 years old. His
father, who had a difficult time managing money and was constantly in debt, was
imprisoned in the Marshalsea debtor's prison in 1824. Because of this, Charles was
withdrawn from school and forced to work in a warehouse that handled 'blacking' or
shoe polish to help support the family. This experience left profound psychological and
sociological effects on Charles. It gave him a firsthand acquaintance with poverty and
made him the most vigorous and influential voice of the working classes in his age.

After a few months Dickens's father was released from prison and Charles was
allowed to go back to school. At fifteen his formal education ended and he found
employment as an office boy at an attorney's, while he studied shorthand at night. From
1830 he worked as a shorthand reporter in the courts and afterwards as a parliamentary
and newspaper reporter.

In 1833 Dickens began to contribute short stories and essays to periodicals. A


Dinner at Popular Walk was Dickens's first published story. It appeared in the Monthly
Magazine in December 1833. In 1834, still a newspaper reporter, he adopted the soon
to be famous pseudonym Boz. Dickens's first book, a collection of stories
titled Sketches by Boz, was published in 1836. In the same year he married Catherine
Hogarth, daughter of the editor of the Evening Chronicle. Together they had 10 children
before they separated in 1858.

Although Dickens's main profession was as a novelist, he continued his


journalistic work until the end of his life, editing The Daily News, Household Words,
and All the Year Round. His connections to various magazines and newspapers gave
him the opportunity to begin publishing his own fiction at the beginning of his career.

The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club was published in monthly parts
from April 1836 to November 1837. Pickwick became one of the most popular works of
the time, continuing to be so after it was published in book form in 1837. After the
success of Pickwick Dickens embarked on a full-time career as a novelist, producing
work of increasing complexity at an incredible rate: Oliver Twist (1837-39), Nicholas
Nickleby (1838-39), The Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge as part of the Master
Humphrey's Clock series (1840-41), all being published in monthly installments before
being made into books.

In 1842 he travelled with his wife to the United States and Canada, which led to
his controversial American Notes (1842) and is also the basis of some of the episodes
in Martin Chuzzlewit. Dickens's series of five Christmas Books were soon to follow; A
Christmas Carol (1843), The Chimes (1844), The Cricket on the Hearth(1845), The
Battle of Life (1846), and The Haunted Man (1848). After living briefly abroad in Italy
(1844) and Switzerland (1846) Dickens continued his success with Dombey and
Son (1848), the largely autobiographical David Copperfield (1849-50), Bleak
House (1852-53), Hard Times (1854), Little Dorrit (1857), A Tale of Two Cities (1859),
and Great Expectations (1861).

In 1856 his popularity had allowed him to buy Gad's Hill Place, an estate he had
admired since childhood. In 1858 Dickens began a series of paid readings, which
became instantly popular. In all, Dickens performed more than 400 times. In that year,
after a long period of difficulties, he separated from his wife. It was also around that time
that Dickens became involved in an affair with a young actress named Ellen Ternan.
The exact nature of their relationship is unclear, but it was clearly central to Dickens's
personal and professional life.

In the closing years of his life Dickens worsened his declining health by giving
numerous readings. During his readings in 1869 he collapsed, showing symptoms of
mild stroke. He retreated to Gad's Hill and began to work on Edwin Drood, which was
never completed.

Charles Dickens died at home on June 9, 1870 after suffering a stroke. Contrary
to his wish to be buried in Rochester Cathedral, he was buried in the Poets' Corner of
Westminster Abbey. The inscription on his tomb reads: "He was a sympathizer to the
poor, the suffering, and the oppressed; and by his death, one of England's greatest
writers is lost to the world."

Elements of the Short Story

 Principal Characters
The Narrator: The story doesn't provide a great deal of biographical
information about the narrator, but we know that he is intelligent and friendly and
also that he is very practically-minded. Whenever the signal-man mentions some
supernatural detail, the narrator thinks of a realistic explanation for it.

The Signal-Man: The signal-man is a late- to middle-aged individual who works


alone in the narrow gorge. His age and solitude contribute to the narrator's
skepticism about his supernatural visions.

The Ghost: As with many Charles Dickens stories, this one has a ghost. The
ghost appears to the signal-man (and only the signal-man) at the mouth of the
tunnel and waves his arm, as if to warn the signal-man to get out of the way of
something.

 Setting
The entirety of 'The Signal-Man' takes place in a narrow gorge through which
passes a railway line. At one end of the gorge is a dark tunnel from which trains
emerge. Farther up the line is the hut where the signal-man works. His job is to
communicate with other signal-men up and down the line and to warn the engineers of
trains if there's some danger ahead on the tracks.

 Plot Summary
The story begins with the narrator calling "Halloa! Below there!" into a railway
cutting. The signalman standing on the railway below does not look up, as the narrator
expects, but rather turns about and stares into the railway tunnel that is his
responsibility to monitor. The narrator calls down again and asks permission to
descend. The signalman seems reluctant.
The railway hole is a cold, gloomy, and lonely place. The signalman still seems to
be in fear of the narrator, who tries to put him at ease. The signalman feels that he had
seen the narrator before, but the narrator assures him that this is impossible.
Reassured, the signalman welcomes the newcomer into his little cabin and the two men
speak of the signalman's work. The narrator describes that the signalman seems like a
dutiful employee at all times, except when he twice looks at his signal bell when it's not
ringing. There seems to be something troubling the signal man, but he will not speak of
it. Before the narrator leaves, the signal man asks of him not to call for him when he's
back on the top of the hill or when he sees him the following day.
During the second visit, as directed by the signalman, the narrator returns and
does not call. The signalman tells the narrator that he will reveal his troubles. He is
haunted by a recurring spirit which he has seen at the entrance to the tunnel on
separate occasions, and, with each appearance, was followed by a tragedy. In the first
instance, the signalman heard the same words which the narrator said and saw a figure
with its left arm across its face, while waving the other in desperate warning. He
questioned it, but it vanished. He then ran into the tunnel but didn't find anybody. A few
hours later, there was a terrible train crash with many casualties. During its second
appearance, the figure was silent, with both hands before the face in an attitude of
mourning. Then a beautiful young woman died in a train passing through. Finally, the
signalman admits that he has seen the spectre several times during the past week.
The narrator is skeptical about the supernatural, and he suggests that the
signalman is suffering from hallucinations. During their conversation, the signalman
witnesses a ghost and hears his bell ring eerily, but the narrator sees and hears
nothing. The signalman is sure that these supernatural incidents are presaging a third
tragic event waiting to happen, and is sick with fear and frustration: he does not
understand why he should be burdened with knowledge of an incipient tragedy when
he, a minor railway functionary, has neither the authority nor the ability to prevent it. The
narrator believes that his new friend's imagination has been overtaxed and suggests
taking him to see a doctor.
The third time, the narrator visits the railway cutting again and sees a mysterious
figure at the mouth of the tunnel. This figure is not a ghost, however. It's a man, one of a
group of officials investigating an incident on the line. The narrator discovers that the
signalman is dead, having been struck by an oncoming train. He had been standing on
the line, looking intently at something, and failed to get out of the way. The driver of the
train explains that he attempted to warn the signalman of his danger: as the train bore
down on the signalman the driver called out to him “Below there! Look out! For God’s
sake, clear the way!” Moreover, the driver waved his arm in warning even as he covered
his face to avoid seeing the train strike the hapless signalman. The narrator notes the
significance of the similarity between the driver's actions and the actions of the spectre
as the signalman had earlier described them, but leaves the nature of that significance
to the reader.

 Conflict
“The Signal Man” is constructed around the conflict between rational thought and
what appear to be supernatural events. In the short story, a seemingly intelligent and
logical man firmly believes that he is haunted by a ghost or a spectre which warns him
about catastrophic events which are about to happen close to his railway cabin station.
But while the man is convinced he is not hallucinating and that there is a link between
the apparitions and two railway accidents (a crash and the death of a lady)

 Theme
In the short story, we have the theme of uncertainty, fear, isolation, madness,
trust and respect. Narrated in the first person by an unnamed narrator it becomes clear
to the reader after reading the story that Dickens may be exploring the theme of
uncertainty. The narrator unlike the signalman does not believe in ghosts or spectres.
He appears to be more level headed and looks for a rational reason for the signalman’s
sightings. Though he can see that the signalman is frightened or fearful of the
appearances he has seen. It is as though he cannot logically process them in his mind
or give them reason which would help him to understand what he has seen. All that is
known is that the signalman believes he is seeing a spectre or ghost and he cannot be
persuaded by the narrator that there is nothing to see. That perhaps the signalman’s
imagination is running wild or that the night is playing a trick on his mind. However what
is certain is that the signalman is afraid and it may not help that while he is working he is
isolated for long hours. Leaving time for his mind to play tricks on him. The setting of the
story may also contribute to the hallucinations that the signalman sees. He has no
natural light in his hut which would be not only unhealthy but would lead to the
signalman’s mind again playing tricks on him.
