Ballard This book has been written especially for those physicists and engineers who are interested in the device applications made possible by the development of nonlinear optics over the past ten years, It provides a theoretical introduction to the subject in the simplest possible ‘mathematical terms. Showing how real laboratory situations can depart from ideal theory, the authors acquaint the reader with the type of problems that he is likely to encounter in constructing nonlinear device. Another special fea- ture of this volume is a detailed discus- sion of nonlinear materials, their practi- cal problems and characteristics, and of the selection procedures necessary to ensure the use of good material. Throughout, the exposition is presented entirely on a classical basis and no knowledge of quantum mechanics, other than the most elementary ideas, is required. The material in Applied Nonlinear Opties is presented in seven chapters. The first lays the groundwork of basic ideas necessary for an understanding of the subject. The theory of nonlinear optical interactions is introduced in Chapter Two. Chapter Three treats the important subject of phase matching. Chapter Four is devoted to materials, and the remaining three chapters pre- sent detailed treatments of second- harmonic generation, up-conversion, and parametric oscillation. The appen- dices present a comprehensive list of materials and their properties. A list of references and an index complete the volume. Applied Nonlinear Optics will be of value to physicists and electrical engineers in the field of electro optics and communications, especially to those who want to design or construct devices. In addition it can be used in ‘courses on laser applications and non- linear optics at the senior and graduate level. ZS-S59 PRESTON POLYTECHNIC LIBRARY Tel.
